Toyguide Update: 6″ TBS Qui-Gon Jinn (#40)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume with our newest entry in the 6″ Black Series assortment for the venerable Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn (#40).

PROS:  The 6″ Black Series continues to impress with its level of detail, sculpting and paint — Qui-Gon Jinn is no exception as Hasbro did an excellent job of capturing Liam Neeson’s large stature and ever-stoic personna. The overall sculpt of the figure is quite nice with great effort applied in rendering the different textures of the Jedi outfit. Articulation is extensive despite the lack of double-hinged elbows that would have made achieving some two-handed lightsaber stances a bit easier.  Hasbro included an extra “gestured” left hand for striking alternate poses or attempting Jedi mind tricks on your other figures.

UPDATE: a new detail has been brought to light thanks to a few of our readers. The eyes for Qui-Gon are actually separately cast and painted pieces allowing for much greater accuracy and realism!

CONS: The main oversight this figure contends with is the absence of a soft goods robe. Qui-Gon spent a significant portion of The Phantom Menace wearing it so it feel odd without it. Another accessory that could have been a nice bonus is the Jedi communicator (you know, the one that looks like a women’s razor). A previous 3.75″ figure has included it the past – seems a shame not to revisit it for this release.

Head to the toyguide for our detailed image gallery and to judge for yourself whether this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Qui-Gon looks really, really good, but also unfinished in the face. The eyes are awesome but the face is much more china-doll porcelain than most of the other Black Series figures.

  • TheLastTrooper

I bought a unmasked kylo ren for 8 bucks yesterday at walmart which was pretty cool
all the figures are half off, but i couldn’t find any 40th anniversary or royal guards 🙁

    • Brian Beck

the royal guards are not at retail yet. hit game stop for the 40th stuff.

  • Funtomaz

First, great photos! The very few other (video) reviews made Qui-Gon look quite bad, but this is the first time that I think the figure looks quite good.
About that face sculpt… is it just me or does something seem to be off when you look at the face straight on? The profile or when you only slightly turn Qui Gon’s head it does look very much like Liam Neeson, but from the front? I don’t know, doesn’t seem to look like him at all. Might be the paint apps? The jawline?
Also, it’s a pity they didn’t use the same aesthetics for the tunic as for Ep III Obi Wan and Anakin with mixed materials. I prefer the mix of cloth and plastic.

    • RumSleg

I agree with you that there’s something ‘off’ about the head sculpt that is hard to put into words. He almost looks like the ‘evil’ version of Qui-Gon, somehow.

creativity at work, love it !

      • Paul B

        Thanks!
My mind is always working to try to improve figures when Hasbro forgets to either include accessories or make them.

  • Paul B

    Two things
An Ep I era 3.75″ commlink will work for these six inch figures, too big for 3.75″ perfect fit for six inch.
Buy an extra FAC (Fortieth anniversary collection) Obi Wan Kenobi figure and use the cloak from that.

I’ve been really impressed lately of how much better the 6in’s have become with the Paint App’s. This new tecnique for doing Eyes sounds like it can lead to really great thing’s. Imagine what they could do with a 6in Raddace or Ackbar with Eyes done like that. They could even do a painted, clear Plastic for incredible realism. They will look like real Eyes. Have to see if they continue to do it, but with them doing on just a “normal” Human Character, i think Qui-Gon is just the first and they all will done this way from now on.

  • Ben Bonstein

They need to make more prequel figures. How sweet would a 6″ Super Battle Droid be?

    • Brian Beck

I’m not into the prequel’s, but I would get that, and ‘technically’ I could use it with my rebels display.

The sh figuarts ones work perfect. And the red one is pretty cheap on Amazon.

I actually bought some extra Old Bens when Dorkside had them discounted just for the robes to use with Qui-Gon and ROTS Obi-Wan. I’m also customizing one of the Old Bens to make a “sitting Ben” for the Landspeeder.

  • You should just take the communicator off the old 3 3/4 guy. It was oversized at that scale anyways, but it will probably be perfect here.

  • Jonesy the space cat

This figure is great. I read that the eyes were molded separate from the head. It looks pretty clean. I hope they do this more. As far a the lack of robe, I wish they would do a mail away jedi accessory pack with robes and the poncho and the comlink etc. That would fix that. Obi-wan and Anakin need robes too. This figure is worth the price even without the extra accessories.

    • Jonesy the space cat

I guess I should say that I do have the figure and the eyes ARE separate. I just did not notice until I read it.

    • Brian Beck

an accessory pack would be a great idea. you could have a jedi pack, a rebels one, imperial one, droid one…….they are not smart enough to ever do that 🙁

  • Fiery Little One

No robe? Well that’s disappointing, but I’m still thinking of picking him up. The only Jedi Master I have right now is his former apprentice and I’d like another without dipping into the older figures.

  • John Donaldson

Does this have a release date?

  • bigpiffle

i think this is one of the best waves (character wise at least) that the black series have released since the force awakens. it caters for almost all fans – it would’ve been even better if hera wasn’t delayed but it’s still really exciting to see four highly anticipated characters be released in one go! do you reckon this will be the the final old school wave before the last jedi’s force friday?

    • Brian Beck

I would think no, that there would/should be one over the summer-Hara, Thrawn, Jaina and Tarkin are coming…..sometime. My guess force Friday’s figures would be heavy TLJ, and none of them fit ( not that that really matters ) wave 2 of the 40th figures does throw things off though.

      • Paul

Thrawn, based on the leaked GameStop list, is coming out in force Friday.

Hera is being held back and made better; no release date

Jaina, according to JTA will come out in one of the fall assortments.

Tarkin has been confirmed by hasbro for 2018.

        • Brian Beck

          Cool.

  • Ah Hasbro, your definition of a premium or collector’s action figure is so badly eschewed. The lack of robe is a crime and makes the character incomplete. Simple.

    • The lack of the robe doesn’t negatively effect the quality of the figure as say a poor deco or likeness. I do see your point, but I feel he stands well on his own.

      • Yes but he is no means a definitive figure if he doesn’t have the robes, six inch started as a collector focused line, and I am just saying that this ain’t anywhere close to what a collector focused figure. If Hasbro sells a 3.75 figure without robes and then does a version with robes, well those are toys and the price point is different and more reasonable, but as an adult paying 30 bucks Canadian for a collector level figure, then there should be robes. I resent the low level of accessories and I want Hasbro to know the reason why I won’t buy a figure that has many strong points but fails on a fundamental level as a complete product. just like why I won’t buy a C3PO, I want the figure sold with no accessories to at least come with an extra arm so I can do TFA and the original trilogy version and as much as I liked the k2so figure, it should of at least come with a blaster…. I am not buying multiple versions of figures at this price point.

  • Brian Beck

that was a woman’s razor that they used.

    • I know, hence my comment

      • Brian Beck

Oh I figured, that was for the people that are nerd trivia ‘challenged’ 🙂

  • It is a downer that no robe was included now considering the extra bits included with Darth Maul. It’s nice to finally have a figure to display along with the 6″ Maul though.
