I could pull about fifty sets out with the price tags still on them from around the early to late 80s. Lego has always been around 10 cents a piece. I have perused about 3 years worth of old Lego catalogs and I just don’t see your complaint. The only sets that are too high are the new Minecraft sets, and who buys those?
Yes, there has been a slight increase in some sets. I will give you this, a lot of the sets that should be $9.99 are now $12.99 and the mini-fig blinds have gone from $1.99 to $3.99, (but I understand that, they are extremely popular). The new Sith Infiltrator IS overpriced for only having 4 mini-figs, but unless you use TRU prices as your base, everything is where it should be.
Otherwise, you argument just doesn’t hold water.

I don’t know what forums you go to, but I don’t see the complaints. Lego prices have hardly changed at all in 30+ years. Plus, you always have to expect to pay a little more for a licensed set (normally between 5 and 10 USD) as compared to a Lego brand set. If you are going for just straight best price per piece, buy the Creator sets. And I don’t count droids as figures and I am strictly using USD. Prices are all over the place if you start going international.

Jack, that is not entirely true. Most of the sets still come with 2-4 figures. Look at the sets this year. The sets you are referring to are the ones that come with bulk battle droids which are not the same as a normal mini figure. Also, check out the pricing for Disney Lego sets in other countries, it is higher. Lego takes less of a profit with certain brands based on the region it is sold. I won’t even get into the value in the Marvel Lego sets. Its disturbing.

It is not the license fees that cause the higher price and lower piece count with Lego. It is the number of mini-figures you get with the set. The more mini-figs you get the higher the overall price. More and more sets are coming with 6 to 8 figs, where you used to get 3 and at max 4, except on your $100+ sets.

Yeah, the cost of the Lucasfilm license is no doubt large for a company like Hasbro, but it stretches credibility to use the license costs (and even more expensive Chinese labor) to explain most of the price increases. At the end of the day, some of it is just plain wanting to charge more for the product. Profit. And knowing they can get away with it and enough people will pay that higher price in stores to make it worth the trouble and the controversy.
