I know — even the original Kenner version has 4 limbs. I read a story Kenner was basically responsible for him having 4 limbs as they misinterpreted concept art (or was it they simply assumed he would have 4 limbs?). He was originally intended to only have feet.

True, but after all, Lucasfilm licensing has approved all the 4-limbed versions over the years and never a legs-only version, so they may have established the canon.
