agree. more ewok violence and more ewok deaths (other than that one by the AT-ST) would have made it more realistic. But I get why it is what it is.

I love Ewoks. The action figures Hasbro has made of Ewoks since TSC Chief Chirpa have been amazing. Even the 5poa Wicket wasn't bad. My only complaint in ROTJ, if you can even call it a complaint, is that I would've liked to see them be more violent.

You're welcome! I remember attending a panel at Celebration a number of years ago where various authors of custom collector's books (Gus et al.) were there with Steve Sansweet. Sansweet tried to explain the IP rules, but it's never been entirely clear to me how exactly they apply to things like fan films or "space walls." I guess if you start making serious money from their IP, you're in trouble. As long as you're penny ante, they apparently leave you alone. I don't know where that line is crossed though. One thing I'm pretty sure of: LFL seems to be more generous than the Star Trek owners (Is that CBS now?). I've heard horror stories about the Trek owners chasing down websites and other people they perceive as infringing on their IP.

Thanks!! I've always been thrown by how this whole thing is handled and addressed. When small companies release exclusive homage figures at summer conventions, I just assume that they must have needed Lucasfilm and/or Hasbro approval. Companies that create 3D printed diorama pieces skirt the issue by calling them "Space Walls." I assumed that one-offs were given a little more leeway but releasing several and using the trademarked name "Ewok" seems to contradict things. To be clear, I am overwhelmingly in support of this - I just realized my ignorance to how it all works and was hoping to get some ideas from people who might know. Intellectual property issues are weird. I'd love to be able to buy decent discs of some of the better fan edits of Satr WRs and other films but am too lazy to get them through back alley means. If they could just be openly offered for sale, I'd be a happy man. I'll buy every action figure and Star Wars disc LF and/or Hasbro releases but I'd also like the go-ahead to buy some well-made fan interpretations of these works. Again, thanks for the info!

Customized figures that are one-of-a-kind are generally considered as artwork, and as such are typically exempt from copyrights. Casting or otherwise reproducing the original for distribution, gain or profit would be considered a violation. Same goes for paintings & drawings, knittings, and arts & craft things, etc. With that having been said, of course there are ways that even a one-off could be a violation, such as a big statue of Vader sold for display in a town square. There is a grey area.

Customs are one-off pieces of art and can be sold. Even little cottage industries making very limited runs of customs (Hole in the Ground or Twelfth Parsec) are generally ignored by LFL. There's a threshold at which Hasbro and Disney will send an urgent C&D letter, but I can't recall any examples of customizers crossing that threshold. No, wait. There was a guy last year trying to do a kickstarter of the ROTJ Jedi spirits in a package clearly marked with SW logos. He got shut down. The way I heard it explained was that you could make and sell personal action figure art all you want as long as you don't use official insignias or logos. Even weirder - you can make books about items you own with photos of packaging with official logos, and that's OK. But you can't actually use the official logo.
