People complain about the sculpts a lot. But if you ever check out the professional painters that repaint these 6″ figures you will see that the sculpts are pretty good. It is purely the simplistic paint apps that ruin these figures.

I’m not trying to bash Hasbro in this case… but they seem to really kick tail on alien faces, but human faces, not so much. It’s like they “soften” the sculpt or something and just don’t do as good of a job on the facial details as they could. I think it’s all about trying to save a few pennies… they can knock things out of the park when they want to.

I also think the intent of the article was to say, “You might want to pick and choose in person” rather than rushing to order online (especially since it’s a $30 toy)… I found 6 of these figures last night at my local Target… 5 of the 6 had acceptable paint jobs to me. Two stood out as good – one of which I purchased.

The best part of this figure to me is the soft goods. He looks so much better and can finally bend his knees and be posed better. I also like the base.

I’m shocked and amazed by the negative comments. Perhaps I shouldn’t be, with what I’ve seen from Star Wars fans over the years. Here we are, getting the best face sculpts and paint apps ever and people are still complaining. There is nothing I see above or on the half dozen samples at my local Target that screams or even whispers “defect” or needing to be pulled due to quality control. Are Hasbro faces as eerily real looking as Hot Toys? No, but they also don’t require you take out a second mortgage. Do other companies do faces better at a similar price point? Yeah, I’d say McFarlane does, but there are even more companies that do them worse. And with McFarlane, you give up a lot of articulation for those gorgeous paint apps.
