In reply to bigpiffle. on the collecting side of things, it might follow the recent trend--main character fill lines and a few aliens here and there, but none of the depth or fun of past lines. RO had SO many excellent Partisans, but only two of them were made, thus far.

If this begins after the conclusion of Games Of Thrones, and Rian Johnson is also prepping a new trilogy, I wonder if this series of films will premiere exclusively on Disney’s streaming service. So many projects are in development currently, and unless Lucasfilm is planning on two Star Wars films a year, I can’t imagine this early development taking years to get to us.

If I were to read the tea leaves, i don’t think this idea was in the offing until the angry fan reaction to TLJ. This is a crack in the Kathleen Kennedy agenda, as ShipGirlLover points out, and I would guess it was Disney’s response to win back a disaffected OT fan base and bring back some of the “old boys” EU-type fans to the Star Wars franchise. This was calculated to balance out RJ and his new trilogy. One trilogy that takes SW to the future (RJ’s), and another that looks backwards to the EU storylines and OT. Splitting the difference, that’s my read.
