A Case For Film Restoration, Not Tampering<\/b><\/span>

This is a rather off-topic post, but I hope my reasoning will be made clear.<\/p>\n

I just finished reading an excellent interview over at\u00a0The Digital Bits<\/a>, concerning the hours of labor intensive work that has gone into the restoration of the classic KING KONG for the upcoming DVD relase (Nov 22). At one point, they talk about making the film cleaner than it has been since 1933, and the temptation to tamper with obvious visible flaws, specifically, rods used to control some of the puppets clearly visible in some shots.<\/p>\n

Their feeling is that if it wasn’t fixed in 1933, it shouldn’t be fixed today. Here’s a couple lines from the interview…<\/p>\n

” RH: I totally agree with that position… because when a modern audience looks at what are essentially optical artifacts… it stops the film. It affects the performances… it affects everything in a negative way.<\/p>\n

NP: It removes you from the experience. ”<\/p>\n

UPDATE<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Looks like it might be more likely a problem with the manufacturer than with the SW Shop as this Yak reader writes in to tell us…<\/p>\n

” My wife and I ordered the infant Yoda costume for our child back in early August and it arrived at our house last Saturday (October 15th). I had received about 3 or 4 backorder notices from the retailer over the 2 and 1\/2 months that we waited for the costume to arrive. I made repeated calls and nobody seemed to know what was going on. All Star Wars costumes from the infant lines to the adult costumes (deluxe princess Leia, etc) were MIA.<\/p>\n

I decided to investigate a bit. I called a number of OTHER online Star Wars Halloween costume retailers to see if our retailer was just crappy or if there was similar problems elsewhere. They all said the same thing… “The manufacturer has had a hard time with the Star Wars costumes for some reason. Missing components. Wrong components. You name it.” The infant Yoda costume specifically had a waiting list of over 400 people @ onestepahead.com as of October 12th. Since our child’s costume arrived last Saturday it sounds like a small number of the costumes are starting to ship but they are in limited supply. \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n

Spike TV has opened up the vaults to secure television rights to the entire George Lucas space opera. The Viacom-owned male-centric network signed an exclusive six-year deal worth a reported $65 million to $70 million.<\/p>\n

According to Daily Variety, Spike won a fierce bidding war against NBC Universal’s USA Network and Sci Fi Channel and Turner Broadcasting’s TBS and TNT that pushed up the price from an initial $50 million, where it hovered a few months ago, to Spike’s record offer.<\/p>\n

” Got some interesting news at my local (Lynwood, WA) Toys R Us today. I inquired at the customer service desk about an exact release date for Emperor Hologram figure, and of course, they didn’t know what I was talking about. But they found it in their computer,
\nand informed me that their warehouse in CA had 4000 (units, or cases, they didn’t specify). Only their store in Anchorage AK, had any orders pending. The awesome person helping me, suggested a rain check for the figure. Now, here’s where it got good. She put me down for a couple figures, saying that putting down more figures would put up a flag to the warehouse of interest, and would get the item possibly shipped sooner. So, if others get rain checks, and show interest, the chances may be good that the figures may arrive sooner!<\/p>\n

” Thanks to my daily reading of Yakface I scored two each of the of the Target exclusive lava reflection Obi-Wan and Darth Vader figures. There weren’t any out on the floor, so I went to the price check scanner and put in the DPCI numbers. Sure enough, the scanner said they had them in the stockroom. I went to a sales associate and asked very nicely for her assistance and she looked up the numbers herself, went to the stockroom, and after about 5 minutes she came back with 2 cases unopened. I was so excited!!! I was able to go through the cases and take out the best looking ones! It looked to me like there were 6 or 8 of both figures in each case. Well, I decided to hit a couple of Targets using the DPCI codes and made a partial score.<\/p>\n

Target #1 using the DPCI codes scored me a Clone Attack On Coruscant set. I was told the other items were showing up as out of stock (mustafar figs and shadow trooper). The associate I talked to was nice beyond belief.<\/p>\n

Taking a run to Target #2 I tried the same trick. The associate said they had the stuff in stock but they were not allowed to set them out before 10\/16 or they would get assesed a heavy fine. Um……yeah.<\/p>\n

So one exclusive down, two to go. Yay!<\/p>\n

I thought I’d share another positive DPCI experience sent into me by Yak reader Doug…<\/p>\n

” This same exact method just worked for me today at a Target store in Des Moines Iowa. I would encourage every one to run these numbers through a price checking station at Target. I got the Clone Trooper attack 5 pack and both Obi-Wan and Darth from the Mustafar duel figures. Each of these items showed available in the stockroom and I got an employee to dig them out for me. This store did not, however, yet have the Stealth Clone Trooper, although it did “find” the item at the price checking station. Another Target store on the opposite side of town had “item not found” on all 4 DCPI numbers.”<\/p>\n

The codes work folks! Use ’em but be polite, the associates are going out of their way for you when you do this. It’s far easier for them to say ” we don’t have them ” and blow you off.<\/span><\/p>\n
