San Diego has come and gone, but there has been an awakening, and it is the confusion and frustrations of the Star Wars collector. Read on<\/a>\u00a0as I attempt to armchair quarterback last week’s Hasbro event and hope for better things to come in our journey to Force Friday.<\/div>\n

Fans looking for the floodgates of toys and information to unleash upon the collecting world were in for quite the drought (only surpassed by California\u2019s actual drought) at this year\u2019s San Diego Comic-Con. It wasn\u2019t a huge shock that merchandise for\u00a0The Force Awakens<\/i>\u00a0is still being held very close to the vest but I was genuinely surprised how little was revealed. At the time, we had already seen two teaser trailers but we have only \u201cofficially\u201d seen two 6\u201d figures – and both of them troopers –\u00a0one of which is only available in a gigantic TIE Fighter that garnered oohs and aha\u2019s at the beginning, but quickly evolved into \u201cbut where would I put it\u201d and \u201cI\u2019ll wait for a sale or clearance\u201d type conjecture. Unofficially, we\u2019ve seen prototypes of Kylo Ren, Rey, BB-8, Finn and Chewbacca but they weren\u2019t even hinted or acknowledged by the Hasbro team last week. Hasbro didn\u2019t even have the new packaging featuring Kylo Ren on display. Why not take the opportunity to at least have a physical representation of that on display?<\/p>\n

Despite the mystery box of all that is The Force Awakens<\/em>, that didn\u2019t really excuse the lack of everything else\u00a0unrelated<\/i>\u00a0to the new film either. This is the “Journey”\u00a0to The Force Awakens<\/em> after all, isn\u2019t it? Sure, we got some great reveals of 6\u201d figures like Kanan, Sabine, Jango, Farmboy Luke, a detailed look at Ahsoka\u2019s proposed deco and, to no one\u2019s surprise, Darth Revan as the Fans\u2019 Choice winner. But where was the stuff for the 3.75\u201d fan? The bantha in the room was the fact that there was no direct answer regarding collector targeted figures (i.e. super articulated) or vehicles in that scale. There are still plenty of other figures in the fabled \u201cparking lot\u201d that could\/should have been revealed. Star Wars Rebels<\/em> is ripe for the picking though\u00a0we only saw two\u00a0new figures from season 2: \u201cOld Man Rex\u201d (who wasn\u2019t even mentioned during the presentation) and half of the new Inquisitor team: the male one.\u00a0 We were treated to the fact that the 5 POA Star Wars Universe<\/em> (previously Saga Legends) line \u2014 the line that \u201ceveryone\u201d loves to hate \u2014 will see an unwelcome bump in price from $9.99 to $14.99 MSRP for the figure two packs. That might not mean much to those that don\u2019t like the style of the figures, but as someone who does, that’s a 50% additional hit to the wallet that could be spent elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Disney\u2019s power over the licensees (Hasbro in particular) prevented any real clarity as to what to expect for the upcoming \u201cForce Friday\u201d event\u00a0on September 4, and as a result, collectors are frustrated. What can we buy that day? How much should we budget? What if retailer \u201cX\u201d has an exclusive but I\u2019m camped at retailer \u201cY\u201d? These are clearly first world collector problems to be sure, but the lack of information has prompted these questions and more from a lot of collectors, myself included.<\/p>\n

We can only hope that announcements through Hasbro’s new venture Hasbro Pulse<\/a>,\u00a0other media outlets, and sites like ours will be able to provide some answers and reassurances to collectors and fans in the weeks to come.<\/p>\n
