Hasbro Battlepacks Update

Hasbro updates with more information on some upcoming Battle Packs, including the much anticipated Capture of Tantive IV set.

Fans have been keeping their fingers crossed that the Stormtroopers would be the “clean” version, and the good news is the latest picture from Hasbro does depict two clean Stormies.

The bad news is, one is a POTF2 Commtech Stormtrooper in the latest picture they’ve shown. Our fingers are crossed that the folks at Hasbro have made an error with this picture and that we’re getting a more recent sculpt on both Stormtroopers.

Sideshow Loses One Of Its Own

It’s always hard to report on the loss of someone in the community, it’s even moreso at this time of year.

Sideshow Collectibles manager of their wholesale division, Diane Kamahele, 42, passed away on Saturday, December 9th from heart failure.

She leaves behind a husband and three children 8,6 and 4. The staff at Yakface sends our deepest condolences out to them and also to all the folks at Sideshow Collectibles.

Master Replicas: Collectors Editions Discontinued

From Master Replicas:

In 2006, Master Replicas launched a new category of MR product, called Collectors Edition prop replicas. The idea behind Collectors Editions was to create a new version of a prop that corresponded with an already-released Limited Edition prop replica. However, unlike the LEs, the CEs would have an open ended edition size, and would be made from more “standard” materials than the high-end Limited Editions. This strategic move was made in an effort to (a) provide a more affordable product for those consumers who had no interest in LEs, and (b) to ensure that some version of these props was available to future collectors, for years to come. While Master Replicas maintains that the CE strategy works conceptually, we have evaluated the data accumulated throughout the year, and decided to discontinue the CE line in 2007. Despite our best efforts to highlight the various differences in CEs and LEs, consumers “as a whole“ did not warm up to the concept. From a results standpoint, the CE program did not meet our expectations. More importantly, in light of recent events (including, but not limited to, our impending merger with Corgi) it has become clear that the CE strategy is not in line with who Master Replicas is, and who we will be following the completion of the merger. This means several things: (1.) The Qui Gon Jinn Collectors Edition Lightsaber will be the only CE released; that, in and of itself, will most likely increase the value of this collectible. (2.) Master Replicas will be unveiling new product types and categories in 2007; product categories that work in conjunction or complement our already popular LE prop replicas. Stay tuned for exciting new announcements from Master Replicas in the upcoming weeks and months! UPDATE Due to our continuing struggle with our forum issues, I’m posting the results of this week’s Q&A here for you to enjoy. Hopefully we will get these issues resolved soon. Thanks for your patience and stay tuned.

1) There have been rumors about seeing the ARC-170 next year. Can you confirm that this is true, and if so any details about it and any pack-ins? I would love to see Oddball’s fighter with him and his droid, which appears to have the same paint scheme as R4-P17, only in green instead of red.

We are looking at an ARC-170 re-release, but it has not been confirmed yet, or even what deco it would be. In any case, we’re likely to hold something like that close to the vest for release at an upcoming show.

2) I understand why you are using the S/A Scout Trooper for now as a Kashyyykk Trooper instead of making a new one, but why didn’t you use the S/A Scout with opening visor then you could of at least molded a Kashyyykk Trooper visor and belt for it, to make it slightly more accurate. This surely would not have cost much and helped with any future new Kashyyykk Trooper. While I’m at it will we ever see a Snowpeeder Luke figure with grapple gun accessory and the famous Hoth Trooper sitting with his small repeater cannon?

The Kashyyyk trooper was a costly one already (due to deco), so we went with the closed mask version to not escalate ops and part count. As for those accessories, it’s unlikely on Luke and at some point we will probably get to the Trooper with cannon.

3) I really dig the Original Trilogy Troopers in the tin sets with the removable helmets but I was curious about something.

Did you have to go to Lucasfilm to get permission to use the Jango Fett headsculpt for the Storm/Snow/Scout trooper figures? The reason I ask is because sometimes when you have an idea for a toy release, it can end up, either directly or indirectly, as canon to the overall Star Wars saga.

We’ve seen the Prequel clone troopers without their helmets but not any of the OT troopers, though it’s always been assumed that the OT troopers were a mix of clones and conscripted soldiers. Now with the release of these figures, Hasbro is kind of confirming that some of Jango’s clones are still in use in the OT, which is why I have to wonder how much permission you have to get from LFL before you produce something that might be integral to the “story”. Thanks!

Yes, we get 100% approval from Lucasfilm on everything in the line. We are not at liberty to create a new canon, but instead discuss opportunities and issues with the team and move purposely if something is cool and fits a direction that is ripe to explore.

UPDATE Target Shuttle Release Date?

In our search for an answer to the Vader Sign riddle, we did turn up one valuable piece of info via a real-live Target associate.

Looks like the long-rumored IMPERIAL SHUTTLE whose existance is still being denied by Hasbro to this day, has turned up in the Target comps with a scheduled ad date for the week of 11/26 – 12/2. It’s also listed as being available for a “limited time”.

REMEMBER, until someone actually sees one of these bad boys on a shelf or Hasbro finally breaks the silence, this is all speculation.

UPDATE We just got the DCPI number for the shuttle. 087-06-0483.

FINAL UPDATE Target Exclusive Vader?…What The?!?!

Conspiracy? Cover-Up? or just plain ‘ol screw up?

A couple days ago this sign went up at my local Target store and I thought “collector’s edition Vader? Surely our faithful Yak readers will want to know about that!!” So I snapped a pic with my trusty phone with one ‘o them new fangled cameras in it.

However, when I took a closer look, the sign had a promo date of 3/15/05. “Crap” I thought, “someone just screwed up” and I thought nothing else about it.

However this morning, a friend of mine spotted the SAME sign at an entirely different Target. So now my coincidence alarm goes off. IS there something on the horizon (and they’re just re-cycling the signs from the Lava Vader promo) or did two different Targets make the same mistake?

Any one else spotting these in your area? I’d like to know about it. Email Me if you have info.

UPDATE Ask and ye shall receive. Yak reader Tracy had an experience which heightens our suspicions….

“After reading the info on the site I had to chime in with my info. Today at my local Target, I asked an employee about new figs. We checked the inventory and they had new figs in the back. He went to pull a case and when he came back nothing. He told me all they had was G.Battle and cases of Vader’s. I thought the guy was blowing me off until I read Yak today. They have Vader’s in the back so maybe something is coming up!!”

Maybe indeed. If ANYONE has some more info as to what this could be, and in a perfect world, perhaps a photo, you’ll be one of our best friends like Tracy!

FINAL UPDATE OK, I think we have the mystery solved. Turns out those signs WERE recycled from the ’05 Lava Vader promo for use with the ’06 TITANIUM LAVA VADER, which about five people in the country seemed to care about. So that about wraps that up. Sorry if we got anyone’s hopes up, but it was starting to look good for a while there. Thanks to all who wrote in.

It appears that some Target stores are already putting their exclusive Boba Fett and General Grievous on clearance, as we have had reports of this as well as personally spotting them for $13.85 in St. Louis. So if you’ve been holding back now may be the time to pick them up.

• I’m Sarah Murphy, I support the wholesale sales team, and do trade shows.
Give us a little personal background – where did you grow up, go to school, etc?
• I’m a local (I was actually born a couple of miles from the home office here in Walnut Creek) and have lived here most of my life. I did live briefly in Florence, Italy, and went to college at CSU Chico. (Getting into Chico State may not be much of an accomplishment- but I assure you, getting out is!)
What is your favorite Master Replicas product, and why?
• The Cinderella Slipper, some people might say I have a princess complex…
If you were a replica, what would you be?
• I’d be the Travelocity Gnome. He gets to go everywhere!
What is your dream product (or license) for Master Replicas?
• I love the Muppet photo puppets, I really want us to make Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys in the balcony.

• Well, I like my job, so I have to be a bit selective…
But since this is Travis’ question, this is fair. Travis, our Marketing Manager pointed out that one of our sales reps (who also happened to be his roommate) likes to work in his underwear. This happened to come up in a conference call and as it turns out the offender was pants-less at the time. Retribution was swift, and within an hour I had a picture of Travis dressed in his girlfriend’s ballet costume. (A fairy princess, complete with wings, pointy ears, and what appears to be a bottle of beer) Travis was out of the office at the time, so we papered his desk, the kitchen, supply closets, reception area, the CEO’s office; we even framed some and made it the wall paper on his computer. I still don’t know if he has not found them all or if he likes the way he looks in lavender tulle.

We’ve had some reports that the Naboo Wave has been showing up at Walgreens stores. But don’t expect to find the whole wave at a single store, Walgreens distribution centers break up cases of figures and send each store just 1-3 figures usually per case in their weekly shipments.

Sure enough, I went to four Walgreens stores on my way home tonight, and found one Naboo figure at one store – Gragra.

Visions Of The Future Continue

The team over at Galactic Hunter have tracked down more 411 on what’s coming in Hasbro’s 2007 line, this time via one of the French Star Wars sites, The Sith Clan, it appears that the Sith Infiltrator, an E-wing, an ARC-170 with figure pack-ins, and a Clone Wars ARC-170 are all on the way, as is the Yavin wave. The Yakface Toyguide updates today with the addition of Darth Vader. Based off of the originalPOTJ mold, this Vader now sports removable lightening and retooled cybernetic components.

A word of caution: The scuplted red and blue wires that protrude from the right hand are formed from hard, brittle plastic. If he happens to fall over and lands just right, these wires can snap off. Trust me I learned the hard way.

Assuming that you haven’t been up all night watching the original version of the original trilogy that you bought at 12:01 am this morning, today is the day to go to snag the newest, or should I saw original version of the movies that started it all. Star Wars Action News – Episode 55

After the live show last week, Star Wars Action News returns to its roots this week to discuss the latest in Star Wars collecting. Just in time, too, as this week is the most important week to Star Wars fans for all of 2006 as the Original Original Trilogy is released on DVD. There are exclusives at a number of different stores, including Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, Wal Mart, and more. We run down each of these stores’ exclusives. Or, if you’re not interested in the store exclusive collectibles, we also discuss where you can get the DVDs cheapest (mail in rebate or no mail in rebate is up to you).

Also, this week saw the release of Gentle Giant’s convention exclusive busts open to the general public on the internet. Some collectors were able to add these items to their collection. Marjorie, Arnie, and Scott discuss the aftermath.

Finally, our new webmaster, Jason, attended his first convention this past weekend with cell phone in hand. He scored us two surprise celebrity appearances, both of whom are prominent in the new OOT DVDs. He also lets us relive the experience of a fan going to their first convention.

This Friday at 5:45 p.m. Pacific Time Amy Blanchard from Master Replicas will be coming to our forums to have a trivia contest where she will be giving away some cool Master Replicas prizes! How Has Star Wars Changed Your Life?

We’ve just gotten word about a new documentary that’s hitting DVD in a few weeks that you may find interesting. I’ll let the press release they sent tell the story…

“5HeadsTall Productions, the Manchester UK based company responsible for the hugely successful online TV show “Inside Report”, are thrilled to announce that the long awaited documentary, “George and Me” is to be released on DVD on 30th September 2006.

“George and Me” investigates how much of a positive “force” Star Wars has been on fans’ lives since its release nearly 30 years ago. It shows that the traditional stereotype of the “geeky” fan has little value in today’s world and that being a fan can really enrich your life and give you the courage to shoot for the stars. It features interviews with fans such as Albin Johnson founder of the 501st,, and Shane Felux director of “Revelations”, the most successful fan-film to date. It also features many other fans from across the globe who have all done amazing and wonderful things because of their love for Star Wars.

The film took the two indie producers, Sky Wilson and Vin Kelly, nearly 2 years to complete, financing the whole operation themselves. They travelled across the United States and all over England in order to see first hand the amazing accomplishments that fans had achieved.

“All of the fans fans we met were special people and should get the recognition they deserve”, said Sky. We wanted to show that Star Wars fans are really wonderful people who have done great things as a result of liking Star Wars,” adds Vin.

This film is the company’s first foray into documentary filmmaking and they hope it’s not the last. The film is released on DVD in Region 1 and Region 2 formats on 30th September 2006.”

As we in the United States observe and remember the 5th anniversary of probably the worst day in American history, take the time out of your day to do two things – 1. hug a loved one and tell them that you love them. 2. If you have the opportunity today to see a person in uniform, whether it is military, police, paramedic, or fire – take a moment to tell them Thanks for volunteering and placing their lives on the line to keep you and your family safe.

Today We Remember

Five years ago, those who plotted ruin brought chaos and destruction to the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight 93, affecting lives all around the world. So many died and suffered that day.

Not long after that tragic day, a friend sent me this tribute and wanted me to share it with as many people as I could. After watching the tribute again today, it’s a solid reminder of what our country is responding to and helps one remember the impact of this event during difficult times; present and in the future. Please keep in the mind the tribute depicts difficult images from that tragic day.

Regardless of your faith, political beliefs, etc, we ask that all of our readers take a moment today to remember and honor those that were lost.

OT: Happy Birthday STAR TREK!

On this date, exactly 40 years ago at 8:30pm E.S.T., a TV series made it’s inauspicious debut on NBC that would change the lives of thousands of geeks.

I’m talking of course of STAR TREK. The venerable space western without which, and let’s be perfectly honest here, there might not be a Star Wars.

In the eyes of some, I’m commiting the ultimate blasphemy in using the “T” word on a Star Wars site, but I don’t care. You see, I’m living proof that you CAN be a fan of BOTH franchises. In fact, I was a Trek fan long before I was a Wars fan. I hold Kirk, Spock & McCoy as dear to my heart every bit as much as Luke, Vader and Yoda.

So let’s dispense with the Trek vs. Wars debate, if only for today and show some love to the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

May it live long…..ah….you know the rest.

SAGA2 TRU TIE Fighter Pilot Variation

We’ve had a few emails with Yakkers asking which pilot was being packed with the TRU exclusive color variant TIE Fighter. Original reports were indication that it was the POTF2 “buff” styled TIE Pilot being packed in, but we had some reports of the SAGA/OTC TIE Pilot being packed in as well.

For those out there that were unsure, there are definitely two versions of TIE Pilots shipping. At a local St. Louis TRU this evening, I saw six of the new TIE Fighter, and three had the newer styled pilot (in pic above from the one I bought) and the other three contained the older pilot. Hopefully this is just a running change and future assortments will have the newer sculpt.

From Meccano to Tri-Logo

Pierre from mintinbox.net passes on to us some info regarding a new collecting book about to go into publication by one of their forum members. This book is dedicated to Star Wars action figure toys, from the illusive Meccano line, by the French licensee in 1978, to the European Trilogo line that was available until 1986.

UPDATE TIE’s & X-Wings Abound!

Holy Smoke! You’d think Episode 7 was opening next week or something from the looks of the shelf at my local TRU (Madison Hgts, MI).

Stopped on by this morning to find the shelf decked out in Star Wars attire and stuffed to the gills with Dagobah X-wings and the new Grey colored TIE Fighter. No AT-AT’s present though.

If you need these vehicles, now would probably be a good time to make a toy run!

UPDATE I just opened up my X-wing (yes, I said OPENED IT! BWA HA HA HA!!) and was surprised to discover that the Dragonsnake figure is not just a cheesy one piece rubber monster, it’s actually got 4 points of articulation. The head swivels where the neck meets the body, it’s “arms” move and it also has a hinged joint at the tail so you can swing it back and forth.

Also, the arms on this version of Jedi Training Luke are removable like the previous Saga version, so now you have a THIRD configureation to put Luke in. Way to go the extra distance Hasbro!
