Toyguide Update: Seripas (CW61)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with our look back at some of the older Clone Wars figures that we have yet to add to the archives. We continue with the formidable bounty hunter, Seripas (CW61).

PROS: From the moment Seripas debuted during The Clone Wars’ second season, fans of the line wanted this figure. Hasbro did an excellent job of recreating the animated character – the deco, articulation and details are fantastic – and the inclusion of the removable Seripas figure was executed remarkably well courtesy of a flip-up hatch. The suit itself is loaded with articulation and the ability to hide the weaponry into the arms make this figure that is not only great to display but fun to play with too.

CONS: It is a little difficult for the figure to hold the included sniper rifle convincingly due to the stiffness of the hands and the large forearms. Hands tend to pop out of their sockets when attempting this as well. A great figure that lacked significant distribution in the general retail market.

Toyguide Update: Boba Fett (CW32)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with our look back at some of the older Clone Wars figures that we have yet to add to the archives. We continue with everyone’s favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett (CW32).

PROS: Hasbro pulled out all of the stops for this version of the Boba Fett when compared to the previous “UBP” version. This one is loaded with articulation which ball-joints everywhere, even the hips, resulting in a figure that can be posed and infinite number of ways look great doing it. The deco, overall sculpt and likeness to the animated character is spot on and the addition of the jetpack and harness are great touches, too.

CONS: This was again, one of the more rare Clone Wars figures in 2010 which was a shame because it is such a fine figure.

CW11 Republic Commando Boss Variant

For variant collectors out there, we thought we’d pass on news and visual confirmation of a rumored running change/variant to the 2012 Clone Wars Republic Commando Boss (CW11) figure. Initial versions of this figure included an all white backpack (as seen in our Toyguide), but orange accented backpack variant has shown up on pegs in the UK and Australia and on eBay. Toyguide Update: Mandalorian Warrior (CW29)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today starting a look back at some of the older Clone Wars figures that we have yet to add to the archives. We kick things off with the Mandalorian Warrior (CW29).

PROS: Collectors that had trouble tracking down this figure via the “Death Watch” Battle Pack, thankfully, got another opportunity to bolster their Mandalorian Warrior ranks. Like most Clone Wars figures of this era, articulation was abundant allowing for varied “actiony” poses and the sculpting and deco is top notch.

CONS: At the time of release, this figure wasn’t available in any great quantity, which is a shame considering their reemergence in The Clone Wars Season 5. It’s also disappointing that Hasbro didn’t see fit to reissue this figure in 2013 with a revised “Maul armor” deco or perhaps a sweet Obi-Wan-in-Mando disguise version.

Toyguide Update: Captain Rex (CW04) (Yakface & JTA Collaboration)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with a special series covering the 2013 “foreign exclusive” assortment of Clone Wars figures. At first blush, you may think that we were only missing out on some simple repacks and repaints, but that is not the case – there is a fair amount of “new” to be had. We’ve teamed up with our friends at Jedi Temple Archives to run down the details and minutia of this final wave of animated series-style figures.

We continue on with the addition of Captain Rex (CW04) – who gets an articulation update, a revised deco as well as a brand new gun.

PROS: Hasbro has addressed one of the major complaint that collectors had about the previous version of this figure. The legs now feature ball-jointed knees making dynamic poses possible. Hasbro also introduced a new Z-6 rotary cannon accessory that is not only more to scale with the figure, but also features a (manually) rotating barrel and articulated handle and grip.

CONS: Despite it’s gain in articulation, the deco (for me) is a step backward as I like the battle-worn treatment the previous version had and the omission of some of the “kill marks” seems like a very unnecessary revision.

Toyguide Update: Anakin Skywalker (CW03) (Yakface & JTA Collaboration)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with a special series covering the 2013 “foreign exclusive” assortment of Clone Wars figures. At first blush, you may think that we were only missing out on some simple repacks and repaints, but that is not the case – there is a fair amount of “new” to be had. We’ve teamed up with our friends at Jedi Temple Archives to run down the details and minutia of this final wave of animated series-style figures.

We continue on with the addition of Anakin Skywalker (CW03) – who gets a new coat of paint and new parts as well.

PROS: Hasbro tweaks the previous release of Anakin (again), upgrading the head sculpt to a more series-accurate profile  and, in a strange move, retooled both forearms as well. This retooling along with a significant redeco of the outfit result in the best animated Anakin Skywalker (so far).

CONS: Obviously, availability is an issue with this figure, but also my sample has a awful paint job with several instances of overspray/paint bleeding. Hopefully this is a fluke and not a wide spread problem throughout the production run.

Toyguide Update: R2-D2 (CW05) (Yakface & JTA Collaboration)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with a special series covering the 2013 “foreign exclusive” assortment of Clone Wars figures. At first blush, you may think that we were only missing out on some simple repacks and repaints, but that is not the case – there is a fair amount of “new” to be had. We’ve teamed up with our friends at Jedi Temple Archives to run down the details and minutia of this final wave of animated series-style figures.

We continue on with the addition of R2-D2 (CW05) – not a simple repaint here…. this is an all-new mold (for him).

PROS: For this latest iteration of R2 from the Clone Wars, Hasbro has repurposed the Build-A-Droid/Droid Factory sculpt first used on the 2011 R7-D4 figure. The result is a far better representation of Artoo from the series and a far better sculpt overall. Since it utilizes the build-a-droid platform there are plenty of customizing opportunities thanks to its parts cross-compatibility with other B.A.Ds.

CONS: For R2-D2 collectors or fans of astromechs in general, not having this figure as part of your collection may hurt a bit. Thankfully, his availability on the secondary market shouldn’t be as scarce as with some of the other figures in the assortment.

Toyguide Update: 501st Legion Clone Trooper (Yakface & JTA Collaboration)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today kicking off a special series covering the 2013 “foreign exclusive” assortment of Clone Wars figures. At first blush, you may think that we were only missing out on some simple repacks and repaints, but that is not the case – there is a fair amount of “new” to be had. We’ve teamed up with our friends at Jedi Temple Archives to run down the details and minutia of the final wave of animated series-style figures.

We start things off with the addition of the 501st Legion Clone Trooper (CW06) – a character design that debuted during the final arc in Season 5 of The Clone Wars.

PROS: Hasbro has taken the opportunity to give us one new character offering for the sub-line’s swan song. The deco for the 501st “Jet Pack” Trooper (as I call him) is very distinctive with its vibrant blue unit flashes as well as red accents that truly set this figure apart from prior 501st Legion clones. Don’t be surprised if you see of few of these costumes make their way into the 501st Legion.

CONS: Availability. Availability. Availability. You’ll have to call in a favor to a friend from The Great White North (Canada) or across the pond (Europe) to obtain this figure unless you want to pay double (or triple in some cases) on eBay.

Toyguide Update: MTT Droid Fighter

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the addition of the Class I MTT Droid Fighter from the 2013 Yoda line look.

PROS: Originally designed as a pack-in, Hasbro instead worked this into the Class I line as a separate companion piece to the MTT. The design and interactivity of the fighter itself is fun with its configurable wings and weapons and with the 2 included figures, it makes for an instant “battle pack” for kids and collectors.

CONS: If you’re a stickler for articulated figures, this set probably doesn’t seem like much of an offering at a price north of $20.

Toyguide Update: 501st Legion AT-RT

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the addition of the 501st Legion AT-RT from the 2013 Yoda line look.

PROS: Despite this set being all repaints, the inclusion of the TX Tactical Droid gives collectors another stab at this hard to find sculpt from 2009. Like other Class I sets for 2013, the main highlight for this is the value in getting 2 figures and a small vehicle for about $20.

CONS: Nothing really new here other than a bunch of repaints, but for the value it’s still a great buy. It’s is obvious that the design aesthetics of this set is based in the world of The Clone Wars, but the packaging gives no indication as such.
