New Chewbacca Buddy?
May 31, 2005 | 10:56 AM EST | Scott

Yak reader “Sebulba Johnny” writes in…

“Hello
Just curious, I picked up a plush buddy of Chewbacca that does not look like the typical plush buddies of Chewbacca that I see at TRU and other places (the one released under POTF2 label). This one looks furrier and has a mane like a lion. Is this a KayBee exclusive? I havent seen a pic of it anywhere on the net.
SebulbaJohnny”

Possibly a new variation?

UPDATE We had a couple of readers chime in with more info…

Scott – This is the new “younger” Chewy buddie which was released on
April 2nd along with the other new buddies. Also in the group is a new Yoda with a cane, a new R2 with a third leg, a new C3PO with one raised arm, and then the totally new Clonetrooper. These are not exlcusive to just one place because I have seen them at both TRU and KB. In the pic attached you can see the differences. Green tag origianl release, blue tag new release.

Jason – The Chewbacca buddy that is on your site is the rots version of the chewie buddy.  Supposedly Lucasfilm did not approve this chewbacca buddy (its looks more like the cowardly lion from Wizard of Oz) and only a few of them got out in the early assortments which were shiped mainly to KBs.  The item is probably going to be one of the rarer pieces from rots.  There is a topic on this buddy at POTF2.com.  A guy said he asked at C3 and that the buddy didnt get approval from Lucasfilm.

Thanks for writing in!

Observing Memorial Day
May 30, 2005 | 11:05 AM EST | Jayson

Take time today to think about all our brave men and women from the past and present who have given their lives defending our great nation. Too often, their sacrifices go unacknowledged or are taken for granted.

A sincere thank you to all fallen members of our Armed Forces on this special day.

Ltd. Edition Giant Vader Pez
May 29, 2005 | 6:32 PM EST | Scott

If you’ve been having trouble finding the Giant Darth Vader PEZ Dispenser (Ltd. Edition Silver Version), or can’t justify the $30 – $40 it’s going for online, check out your local Bed, Bath and Beyond. No kidding.

I’m unsure if this is a chain-wide thing or not, but the store at the Great Lakes Crossing Mall in Auburn Hills, MI had an endcap filled with these in addition to the giant PEZ versions of the Crystal Yoda, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2. Best of all, they were selling for $19.99 ea.

Execute Exclusive 66
May 28, 2005 | 3:10 PM EST | Jayson

Well after a little break to take in all that was and is Revenge of the Sith, the reviews resume with the Target Exclusive Clone Trooper. We’ve all read the horror stories about scalpers walking out of Target stores with arms or carts full of these figures, virtually clearing the entire stock in one fail swoop. (Scalpers should suffer a Jedi’s fate for doing so by the way.) So, sit back and read on what make this figure different from what was actually shown in the film.

NOTE: Now that the film is out, from now on spoiler warnings will not be given.

No, There Is Another (WE WISH!)
May 26, 2005 | 10:01 AM EST | Mark B

I ran across an interesting story this morning while surfing my usual Tech News. Of course this is all rumor and who knows how credible the source is….but apparently, George Lucas has SPILLED THE BEANS about his ideas for another Star Wars (a Prequel-Prequel). The idea is to take place nearly 100 years before The Phantom Menace (According to the article), and deals with the Jedi taking power back from the Sith. Yoda would have the dominate role in this series. The story mentions that “IF” this were ever to happen, Lucas (who is 60), would not be at the helm. Interesting…..

Clone Trooper (#6) Variation
May 25, 2005 | 10:29 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Darth Incubus found the 411 on a possible variation on figure #6– the first version of the clone trooper:

I have noticed a packaging variation with the Clone Trooper figure
(#6) that I haven’t seen posted elsewhere, as of yet. The variation is whether there is a paper Attactix insert, or not.

Here are the date stamps that I have found on the back of the
Clone Trooper figures I have:
43131
43201
43271
43341
43411
43481
43621
50171

Of all these date stamps, only the Clone Troopers with the date stamp
of 43131 include the Attactix insert. I also have not noticed this insert in any other figures in the line, though I don’t have opened versions of each figure, yet.

Burger King Vader Issue… Update
May 24, 2005 | 5:13 PM EST | Jair

OK everyone, I’m going to try put a stop to the Burger King Vader issue once and for all. Let’s review the mathematics of it all:

5 Vaders per 200 figure case. Sure, this sounds awful, but you have to remember that every case will have 5 Vaders. There are 6 different waves of figures. What this means is:

If you divide 195 in 5 (195 being the rest of figures from a case without the Vaders and 5 being the number of different characters in the box) gives you a total of: 39 figures.

If you multiply 5 times 6 (5 being the number of Vaders per case and 6 being the different number of waves) gives you a total of 30.

What all this means is that to every other figure, the difference between the Vaders is not that big at all (for every 100 Vaders there are 130 of each other figure, which is a 1.3 to 1 ratio).

So don’t pay 10 or 20 times what the Vader is really worth (about 3 bucks). Hope this helps and puts a stop to the $25 plus Vaders selling on eBay.

What’s sad is that now not only regular action figures are being scalped, but fast food promotionals also.

UPDATE: Yakreader Edward has e-mailed me a few times telling me that the numbers I posted are wrong, but what I missed was the word “each” in: “for every 100 Vaders there are 130 of “each” other figure, which is a 1.3 to 1 ratio”.

Besides that, the numbers are right. If you take 6 Boxes (one of each wave) you’ll end up with 39 of each of the 30 other figures and with 30 Vaders. It’s still harder to get, but at the very small ratio I posted of 1.3 to 1. Thanks Edward for your e-mails.

UPDATE Hasbro Store Customer Complaint
May 23, 2005 | 10:28 PM EST | Scott

Yak reader Chris L. writes in to let us know about his HasbroToyShop.comexperience and apparently it isn’t good…..

“Hi. i just wanted to drop you guys a line and let you know that my first order arrived today from the hasbro store and it was the worst packing job i have ever seen. i ordered 4 clone troopers, a wookie warrior, destroyer droid and neimodian warrior. they were shoved in a box way too small with almost no packing material whatsoever. every cardback was creased in multiple places and the cardboard was splitting on the majority of the figures. for 6..99 a fig and 6+ dollars for shipping i was pretty P.O.’d, didn’t know if you’ve had any feedback on this subject yet but i hope other collectors aren’t having the same problem.”

Sure hope this is the exception and not the rule.

UPDATE The following Yak readers have written in to share their experiences…

Jake – “I have to echo Chris’s complaint.  I ordered a total of 12 figures and did not receive one mint figure.”

Roger – “I also ordered a bunch of stuff from them.  It was all just pitched into a box and some of the plastic inflated rectagles were rattling around in there too.”

Mike – “I recently ordered several figures from them and had the same experience. They sent one figure in a box that was way too small. The only way it could fit in the box was to bend the card.”

Here’s one REALLY negative response…

Justin – “This is absolutely the WORST customer service I have ever received anywhere. I halfway suspect they screwed up on the number of items they had available and came up with the expiration date thing as a way to cover their tracks. I never once even received an apology for the
inconvenience and every person I talked to dropped the ball. I won’t be going
back to this site – I think I’d have better luck buying from Ebay sellers with negative feedback. Just curious about other people’s
experiences with similar situations.”

It’s not all bad, we’ve received two positive experiences…

Vince – “When I received the 12″ figures [Shaak Ti & Barris Offee] they arrived in a very large box with a lot of packing material. The Clones arrived in a medium sized box also packed very well. They were all in mint condition”

Mark – “I received a new clone trooper, wookie warrior, Destroyer droid, and Neimodian warrior all in A+ condition. The figures were packed
carefully and neatly into an appropriate sized box.
So far Hasbro has been good to me!”

It appears that if you’re a carded / boxed collector, you may want to be careful when ordering from HasbroToyShop.com. Hopefully they will get enough feedback to correct these issues.

A Great Time To Be A Fan
May 20, 2005 | 8:54 PM EST | Scott

Just wanted to throw my two cents in….

I’ve seen “Sith” twice now and I’m still in awe. George proved that he still had a few surprises left in his bag of tricks. Episode III gives the fans everything they’ve been waiting for and more. Sure the dialogue could have used another once-over and the acting, while vastly improved over the first two prequels, was still just a wee bit stiff in spots. But overall, Lucas scores the touchdown with this one.

I won’t go into lengthy descriptions or analysis, by now you’ve read countless dozens of reviews by writers far more gifted than I. But I will say that Episode III’s record-breaking opening and fantastic word-of-mouth make me excited to be a fan again.

Don’t get me wrong, despite all of their flaws I loved Episodes I and II, unfortunately you had to be careful just who you said that to. And while not everyone is as enthusiastic, Episode III brought the fans together one last time and most left the theater with a smile on thier lips and even some with a tear in their eye.

So relish in this Summer, enjoy it on the big screen as often as you can, and enjoy the feeling that comes with having a brand new, and very, very good, Star Wars film in theaters one last time.

Your friend in the Force,
Scott C.

Reflections of the Sith
May 19, 2005 | 1:58 PM EST | Keri

I just got back from the 8:30am digital showing of Revenge of the Sith, so I have completed the circle that began when I saw Star Wars at the age of 2. Yes, seeing A New Hope is my earliest memory (I still get a little freaked out at the torture droid in Leia’s cell on the Death Star!) and many of the most important events in my life have taken place in and around the release of Star Wars films.

I feel a great deal of emotion and in seeing the last film certainly has a bittersweet feeling of finality. I could write for hours about aspects of the film that I liked and those that I did not like. The fact of the matter is, I am grateful for the opportunity to see the film with my own eyes after I had remained spoiler-free for so long.

I hope that everyone enjoys the film and that you are all able to share the experience with someone special. Happy ROTS Day to all!

The Circle is Now Complete (Well, Nearly)
May 19, 2005 | 10:14 AM EST | Mark B

What a beautiful morning here in Boise, Idaho and I’m getting ready to leave for the 10am (followed by the 1:20PM) showing of Return of the Sith. I have to say, I haven’t been this excited about seeing a Star Wars movie since I was 9 years old walking into a theater in Kansas City, MO to see A New Hope for the first time. I was hooked for life. Here I am 36 years old and still feeling the excitement I felt as a kid….life is great! “Adventure, Excitement, a Jedi craves not these things…..” – well sorry Yoda, I Jedi I must not be, because I can’t wait to get into that theater this morning. We’ll see you – AT THE MOVIES!

May the Force be with You!
May 18, 2005 | 6:40 PM EST | Jayson

I just wanted to wish all you faithful readers out there the best of times tonight for the bittersweet end of the Star Wars movie franchise. It is sure to be a day/night long remembered. Drive safely to and from your theatres tonight, MTFBWY and here’s to 30 more years of Star Wars fandom.

Revenge Of The Sith Review…
May 18, 2005 | 1:31 AM EST | Jair

Don’t worry, no spoilers here. I just returned from a Special Media Screening of Episode III. The movie is very good, in my opinion is by far the best of the prequels. It has a lot of action, many references with the original Trilogy, and a lot of surprises.

I do feel that the movie should have been at least 20 minutes longer because there are too many things going on at the end, and they come and go too fast.

Anyway… Empire is still my favorite, but it was great watching Vader again in a Star Wars movie.

Hope everyone enjoys the movie tomorrow night!

Sith Openeing Bigger Than Clones
May 17, 2005 | 10:08 PM EST | Bill

The Box Office Mojo is reporting that Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith will bow at 3,661 theaters onThursday, ranking as the 12th widest release of all time with a significant increase over Attack of the Clones’ 3,161-theater launch.

Star Wars And Recycling
May 17, 2005 | 9:59 PM EST | Bill

Here’s a tongue planted firmly in cheek view at Star Wars and Recycling which made AOL’s newsclipping service today:

Yoda: Recycle You Must, or the Dark Side You Invite; Earth911.Org’s Top Five Ways to Recycle & Reuse Star Wars Souvenirs

PHOENIX–(BUSINESS WIRE)—-Darth Vader won’t just leave dead Jedi in his wake when Star Wars: Episode III debuts Thursday, May 20th. He’ll also leave a mountain of plastic action figures and toys, thousands of used lightsaber batteries and tons of Star Wars paper packaging.

“We love Star Wars as much as anybody, but it doesn’t mean we should emulate the destructive power of the Death Star by harming the environment,” said Anne Reichman, Director of Earth911.org(TM), the nation’s largest portal for local environmental action and information. “Most people don’t know that these types of figurines can’t be recycled, not even little Yoda. In fact, almost all of these toys will sit in landfills until long after we’re gone.”

It’s estimated that more than 250 million Star Wars action figures had been sold by 1999 alone, the year Episode I: The Phantom Menace was released. Given an average weight of .73 ounces per figurine, Earth911.org(TM) calculates the total to be more than 5,700 tons, the equivalent of approximately 1,453 Hummer vehicles. (Weight figures based on Episode III figurines: Anakin Skywalker = 0.8 ounces; Obi-Wan Kenobi = 0.8 ounces; Yoda = 0.6 ounces.)

“Fortunately, much of the other Star Wars paraphernalia and its packaging can be recycled,” added Reichman.

To help fans resist the Dark Side, Earth911.org(TM) released its Top Five Ways Star Wars products and packaging can be safely recycled or reused right in your neighborhood. Based on zip code, people can search Earth911.org(TM) to find local recycling and reuse sites for hundreds of household products.
1. Most lightsabers – imitation ones, anyway – are built like flashlights and include batteries. These batteries can be recycled and properly disposed of by dropping them off at a local recycling center that accepts these items. Certain batteries contain highly corrosive materials that are extremely harmful to people and the environment, and should be recycled through municipal or commercial programs.
2. In the unlikely event that a Star Wars video or DVD loses its appeal, they can be recycled through a variety of local programs or donated to libraries.
3. Star Wars clothing may be donated to the Salvation Army or Good Will for children whose families wouldn’t normally be able to afford this merchandise.
4. Product packaging, which often outweighs the product it holds, can be recycled through local paper and plastic conservation programs.
5. When Star Wars figurines eventually end up at the bottom of the toy box, they can be donated for reuse through various local organizations, such as schools and daycare facilities. Local recycling sites for the products above can be found using Earth911.org’s(TM) zip code search tool.

The Evolution Of Anakin
May 17, 2005 | 9:11 AM EST | Scott

Australian Star Wars collecting site Mousedroid.com has alerted us to new pics that have cropped up of a new addition to the upcoming EVOLUTIONS line. I’ll turn it over to Mousedroid for the rest of the description….

“Just thought you would like o know of a new Hasbro pack that landed on our desks today.

Episode III tells the story of how Anakin finally falls to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader, and with the new Hasbro EVOLUTIONS line you can see his decline before your very eyes. This new range of triple pack from Hasbro features a figures form three different Star Wars movies that depict the change in the character over the course of the saga. We were lucky enough here at Mousedroid.com to preview the Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader Evolutions Pack. With two more packs in the works (Clone Trooper to Stormtrooper and The Sith) these are sure to be a hit with fans as they link the Saga with the original trilogy. Visit our site for more detailed images of this first set.”

Sounds fantastic! Click the link above to head to their site.

Can You Help Out A Fan?
May 16, 2005 | 7:18 PM EST | Scott

If any of our loyal readers can help out Arnie here, I’m sure you’d have a friend for life…..

“I wrote to you a while back regarding my entry on Access Hollywood. It
turned out my entry was shown again on the weekend edition of Access
Hollywood, but I only know about this because people told me they saw
it. Access Hollywood’s weekend edition (airing in my area on 5/14) was an
entire Star Wars special that I would love to see how they worked me
into.

I was hoping one of you might know someone, or be able to post to your
site, to see if anyone happened to Tivo or tape this past weekend’s
Access Hollywood Star Wars episode. I would happily reimburse anyone for tape costs, DVD costs, whatever. I would normally not do this for merch but
since I was actually broadcast on it (it was me getting married,
getting a tattoo, so I hear) I would love to see it.

Any help would be appreciated until the ends of time.

Anyone who wants to can contact me here or
here

Thank you again!
Arnie Carvalho”

Star Wars on the Discovery Channel
May 16, 2005 | 6:20 PM EST | Jayson

Tonight starts a three-day miniseries on Discovery Channel called “The Science of Star Wars” to learn about real-life robots, high-tech weapons and even hot rods of the future.

Tonight’s episode is called “Science of Star Wars: Man and Machine”
Droids, bots, and artificial intelligence — coming soon to rule the world. Right now, robots can clean the house, walk the dog, and identify lifesigns in the rubble of an earthquake. Soon, droids will replace astronauts on dangerous spacewalks and may even act as flying astromech droids to people living in space. How soon will it be before your mother has an unmanned drone to figure out what you’re doing all day? Forget about Big Brother — can the school principal use probe droids to patrol the hallways? Hosted by C-3PO and R2-D2.

My good deed for the day…
May 16, 2005 | 5:11 PM EST | Jayson

During lunch today, I went to my local TRU store to pick up my Anakin with Green Jedi Starfighter and noticed a gentleman scouring the pegs (like we all do). So I approached him and asked what figure he was looking for. He said he was trying to find a Clone Commander for his 7 year old, but they didn’t have any in stock. Luckily, I just happened to have one in my car along with an extra AT-TE Gunner and sold them to him for TRU current sale price ($4.99 ea). Do you remember how awesome it was being a little kid and having your mom or dad bring home a new action figure for you? Hopefully I did my part to help this guy’s little one feel the same way I did back then and usher in the next generation of faithful Star Wars Collectors.

Peter Griffin – A New Hope?
May 15, 2005 | 9:40 PM EST | Scott

The conclusion to tonight’s episode of Family Guy included a hilarious homage to A New Hope. (You’d think there was a new movie coming out soon or something…hmmm..)

After Peter rescues Horace the bartender from the Drunken Clam during a fire, he is given a heroes’ reception at city hall, Rebel Throne Room style, complete with appearances by Chewie, R2, 3PO and the actual John Williams music. The gag carries all the way through the end credits done completely Star Wars style.

May 14, 2005 | 1:58 AM EST | Mark B

Amazingly enough, I found 2 of the 3 new sets of ROTS Galactic Heroes in Boise, Idaho (aka: Scalperland). I was able to hook my 3 year old, Ben, up with some new figures of his own today. I lucked out and picked up the Chewie/Clone Trooper at Walmart, and Kit Fisto/Mace Windu at Target. Now if I could just find him the Super Battle Droid and R2! So, if you or your little one likes these tiny guys – be on the lookout.

***Update – found one of the SBD/R2 sets this morning and have a very happy boy! Thanks to everyone who wrote and offered to help out.

Yak reader Jim P. writes in with this cool display piece that showed up at his store, these showing up anywere else?…

“Hey guys,
I work in a supermarket and this is a promo for ROTS, this is either frito lay or pepsi, They gave us this to display in the aisle, it is actually on top of the aisle in this case. its about 2ft to 3ft high and comes with a lightsaber that appears to be seperate from yoda himself.
Yoda is made out of pvc plastic or something like it because he is one solid and heavy piece, we tried to take him down and it was too much for two of us. I dont know who made it but it is just cool. 6 days till revenge i’m excited thanks.”

Awesome looking Yoda! Thanks for the report Jim!

Final BTH image?
May 13, 2005 | 8:56 AM EST | Jayson

Starwars.com has updated with what might be their last Before the Helmet image before the release of the film next week. I would have thought it might have been an image of Anakin but this photo entitled “Up His Sleeve” shows (highlight to read) the droid commander, General Grievous, launching a grappling hook from his arm (Boba Fett style) to the exterior of Invisible Hand.

Outstanding C3 Poster
May 12, 2005 | 6:00 PM EST | Scott

I just thought I’d take a moment to make mention of one of the more exceptional pieces of Star Wars art I picked up at Celebration III.

The above poster was created by noted Star Wars artist Russell Walks. His work has graced posters, trading cards, graphic novels and a wide variety of other media as well.

This poster was created especially for C3 in a limited run of 250 (on heavier archival stock, a regular unlimited run was also available) and is outstanding in it’s color and vibrance. I particularly love the classy way it pays homage to each of the major characters throughout the entire Star Wars saga.

If you were lucky enough to meet Russ at C3, then you know what a genuinely nice guy he is. He was on hand in the Artist’s Room shaking hands and signing autographs.

Click on the image to go to his site and check out the amazing array of work he’s done. Very nice stuff!

Note: Yak reader Nathan informs me that there is a print of 1950’s pinup girl Bettie Page on the site sans top. A note of caution when viewing the site with your kids. Sorry folks, missed that one!

A Positive Target Story
May 8, 2005 | 11:12 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Mark sent in this report which restores our faith some:

Having a newborn, it is tough to get out of the house. This morning I went to Target, and arrived at 8:01. Sure enough, by the time I got to the SW section, collectors scooped up all the troopers. When I asked one collector about them, he stated there were still 5 left in the box that the guy brought back into the stockroom. After asking a few employees, I finally got one that helped me before. He checked with the manager of the department, and I overheard him say, OK, I will give him one, and sure enough, a clone trooper arrived!!! Can’t say how lucky I am, and grateful to the kind employee at Target. Now, if everyone else could get one!

Target One More Time
May 8, 2005 | 9:36 PM EST | Bill

It looks like the official release date was anything but.
By popular request, here’s the DPCI Number 087 06 1489

Here’s some of the reports we received:

Yak Reader Jedi999 sent this in:
well well well i also have some really bad news about a target in the houston area!!! i went in today hoping to get a clone and come to find out , they had put OUT 3 cases and ONE PERSON GOT EVERYONE OF THEM!!!!!!! I can not stand that! So there is my sad story!

This was Yak Reader Tony’s report:

Hi, I just wanted to report what I found this morning. Like everyone, my friend and I waited for our local Target to open.
We make our way to the Star Wars section (which our our Target they have a whole isle dedicated to ROTS) and there they were figuers #41-44 but to our shock there where no Target Clone Troopers!! We asked the first person who worked the department and they said they had none that everything was put out. We told them that it couldnt be right to talk to the department manager. He said he was off today but would try and get ahold of him on the phone. He was gone for 15 minutes then he pops up with two cases full of troopers 12 in each. I got 2 and my friend got 2. so that left 20 for the next collector. I just hope that true honest collectors get the rest. The clerk did tell us that we where only to get one but since noone was there we could have two each. He did say that he could not put them on the shelf only hand ONE out at a time to each person who ASKED for them. His manager was informed of scalping on ebay and was instructed to only hand out one per person. We offered to give the extra one back but he said no that was his way of saying thank you for letting him know about them. We said thank you and we left with our troopers and our #41-44 to go home and be with the rest of the Star Wars Family. I hope everyone who wants one is as lucky as us.
I also want to say thanks for doing such a great job with news and coverage of Celebration III. You guys have a great site.

Another Target Clone Trooper Dilema…
May 8, 2005 | 11:53 AM EST | Brandon

John S. sends us this interesting story of what happened to him today at his local Target…

My friend and I went to Target before it opened this morning to get our hands on the Clone Trooper Exclusive. We both thought that because of all the buzz on the web and all the Star Wars fans, nuts, wackko’s that are in our area there would be a line. There was not. Counting us and one other person, there were three. The doors opened and we made our way to the toy section. THE CLONE TROOPERS WERE NOT THERE!!!!!!!!!! We knew from talking to store employees during the week that the Clone Troopers were going to be sold on Sunday, May 8, no sooner. We had to wait for the Target employees. Like alot of stores, they have pep-talk at the front of the store for the employees. We were very patient and on our best behavior. Finally after maybe ten minutes we were helped. We gave the employee the product number and he typed it into his hand held inventory index thing. He said he had eleven units. O.K. we said lets see what you’ve got. He came out of the stock room with one box. ONE STINKING BOX!!!! He said that was all they had. I kindda trust this guy, he has always been straight with me before. Even he was surprised that there was only one box. [twelve figures per box by the way] The three of us did not divide the box between us. There is still six figures left for some lucky fans to find.

My point to all this is that:
1. We had to ask for the product from the backroom. Don’t trust the hand held inventory thing. If you can, and the sales employee is willing, have them check the stockroom.
2. It’s probably safe to say that either the figures were sold early or someone has made a killing on the secondary market.
3. Leave some for the next guy. [It’s one of those do unto other type of things….]

Thanks John for that report! Looks like these Troopers will take a little extra effort to snatch!

Revenge of the Topps Etched Foil Cards
May 6, 2005 | 11:38 PM EST | Keri

YakReader Keith was kind enough to write in and correct some errors that I had in my previous report.

“I am sorry to inform you that the etched foils did NOT debut in the Heritage set. The etched foils go all the way back to the Star Wars Galaxy sets. Each set had 6 foils and all 18 of those foils formed together to make one image. The new 18 card image from the Heritage set and the ROTS set attach to the original 18 card image to form one long 36 card image. I have attached a pic of the original 18 card image. As you can see, it attaches to the left of the new 18 card image.”

Keith sent in this image of the original 18 etched foil cards from the Galaxy set below. I can only imagine what the entire 36 card image would look like framed, with all the cards spanning the entire 6 Episode saga.

Hayden Christensen on Leno Tonight

Ron mentions that “I am sure he will talk about the greatest and best movie of the summer coming out. Leno said he would and introduced him with the Star wars tag.” Set your recording device of choice now!

Kingdom Of Heaven Opening Today
May 6, 2005 | 3:38 PM EST | Keri

Kingdom of Heaven opens in theaters today, directed by the great Ridley Scott of Alien and Gladiator fame. How does this relate to Star Wars you ask? Well, our very own Liam Neeson, aka Qui-Gon Jinn is in the film, which looks to be an exciting adventure epic to help tide us over until the BIG Day arrives. Also of note, the film stars Orlando Bloom from the LOTR Trilogy and Pirates of the Carribbean. Purchase some tickets, get to a theater and have a nice night out this weekend!

May 6, 2005 | 2:07 PM EST | Jayson

After all the scalper talk and the custom building posts out there, I decided to whip up some downloadable (clean & dirty) decals for you faithful readers. Based off the Target Clone, I also made Blue and Green versions as well. Just drag each jpg above to your desktop, print’em on label paper, cut’em and bingo – CUSTOM CLONES! Put them on the ROTS clones, retro fit your AOTC clones or even slap them on the VOTC Stormtroopers too! (Notes: Images are 300 dpi so some final tinkering with final output percentages maybe required)

Problems With Exclusives… Again. Cont.
May 6, 2005 | 11:31 AM EST | Jair

I want to thank everybody who sent their opinions about this article. Here is one that was totally different from all the rest. It’s good to sometimes hear a different opinion.

Yak Reader Brian sent the following:

I was reading this article posted on your website and figured I’d
write in with my opinion.
I personally do not have a problem with scalpers. I know scalpers
are everywhere but it’s a problem you just have to deal with.
Take the upcoming Target clonetrooper exclusive for example.
I see no problem with someone buying every one they see
Maybe they’re buying them all for army builders or displays.
Star Wars collectors know how hard it is to find almost any item
produced in a year when there’s no movie coming out, and every movie
year has it’s own, “hard-to, but not impossible to find” figures.
If you’re a serious collector, you know this fact, as tragic and
“wrong” as it is, and should be more active in getting out there
and making the effort to find that particular exclusive.
I have, many times myself, have had to pay an enormous amount of
money for exclusives. In 2002, I was lucky enough to get a
Toyfair Vader from the Star Wars website….but had to resort to
Ebay for my Jorg Sacul figure. I believe the 2 balance each other out.
I don’t live near Disneyland or Disneyworld, and was
“extremely happy” to pay $50-60.00 for my Star Tours figures

I have about 4 or 5 Target stores in my area, and wasn’t mad when
I missed out on the Lava Vader. My feeling was, “oh, well,
someone else beat me to it.”
The Red Guard? I have p found in my area 6 of them since April 2nd.
I build displays, as well as keep one packaged,so I scooped them all up.
I’m also still on the look-out for even more to finish my displays.
Star Wars collecting is supposed to be fun, and it is if you make
it fun. The ones who do not enjoy collecting are the ones who sit
in their homes, wait for the news that an exclusive has arrived, then
go out and search for it. Scalping is, and has been a consistant problem
with collectors since the return of the Star Wars line, and it will only
get worse in the coming years when Hasbro stops producing large quantities.
I find Ebay to be a rather excellent “last choice” place to find
the items I can’t find in stores.
So, to all the people who complain daily about scalpers ruining their
hobby, I say this: Learn to deal with it, and move on. There’s probably
items in your collection that I don’t have. It’s just the way it is.
If you find you really need the item and have to resort to Ebay….
don’t complain. Nobody’s making you pay outrageous amounts for the item.
So, in ending this,if you decide to post this, I hope people will
read another point of view and understand the dynamics of
collecting Star wars figures. You won’t always get everything, but
should be satisfied with what you get. There’s enough out there.
I would also not mind hearing from people who agree or disagree
with my views: please email me at
scorch72@hotmail.com
Brian

So, even though I don’t agree with what Brian wrote in, I respect his point of view. Again thanks to everybody who wrote in…

Wipe Them Out – All of Them!
May 6, 2005 | 10:47 AM EST | Jayson

Fellow MN collector Ryan just informed me that the Target Exclusive Cases have indeed been ordered to be returned to the vendor due to card-fitting problems. But the vender DOES NOT want them back and have ordered for them to be destroyed! Ryan also said that they were removed from Hasbro’s site and the Hasbro online Toy Shop. No word yet on a possible remedy to the situation.

Topps Etched Foil – The Big Picture
May 5, 2005 | 11:35 PM EST | Keri

If you collect Topps Star Wars trading cards, you have been enjoying the etched foil puzzle inserts that debuted in the Galaxy set. Within the Heritage series, there was a wave 1 Hobby and retail set of cards as well as a second wave of Hobby Boxes issued due to the popularity of the set and the artists’ sketch cards.
The Wave 2 Hobby boxes came with some all-new artists added to the line-up as well as another set of etched foil inserts to collect. With the advent of the ROTS movie card set and yet one more etched foil insert, the news came of all 3 sets of 6 cards fitting together to make one large scene. After having acquired my Wave 2 Heritage Hobby Box this afternoon and enjoying my sketch card score from it, I put all the etched foil cards together to make the scene. It is quite impressive in person and a very nice and fun addition to collecting the card sets. Enjoy the photos of the front and back, which make their own unique scenes.

How Lightsabers Work
May 5, 2005 | 10:53 PM EST | Mark B

Ok, this is the best article I have seen in a long time. With all the hype about Episode III, How Stuff Works has the lowdown on how the Jedi’s weapon of choice functions.

Side Show Variations!!!
May 5, 2005 | 9:45 PM EST | Bill

This just in from Yak Reader Chad:
Just wanted to send an email to inform you guys that if you missed out on the Darth Vader Sideshow exclusive that you can still find it online at collectorsnetusa.com

I called in to inquire about the web site as a new customer and ended
up talking with the manager on the phone. A very nice and informative guy who told me about the VARIATIONS of the new Darth Vader and General Grievous Sideshow statues.

The exclusive Darth Vader will come with a mouse droid and an extra
death star base. This is the one he has listed on the website at the same price on the manufacturer’s website. He said the other Darth Vader statue will be listed soon and assumably the price will be lower.

The General Grievous statue that is a Sideshow exclusive has a cape
that comes with the statue and retails for $450. The nonexclusive does not have the cape and is the item listed on the collectorsnetusa.com website. The big difference is the price… About $100 cheaper sans cape. He proceeded to tell me that Sideshow is notorious for variations even on these higher end collectibles. Sounds like we are in for more surprises from Sideshow. Also heard some rumbling about a possible Sideshow 12″ Star Wars line.

2 New Commercials at the OS!
May 5, 2005 | 5:12 PM EST | Jayson

The Official Site has updated tonight with 2 new commericals with a much darker feel than the previous TV spots. One debuted during MTV’s TRL yesterday and the other I caught during the WB’s Smallville. Avoid these like the “Plagueis” if you don’t wish to be spoiled! ; )

Problems With Exclusives… Again.
May 5, 2005 | 12:56 AM EST | Jair

It seems that every few weeks we discuss about how impossible is to get a figure because it’s an exclusive and scalpers take advantage of the situation. It really sickens me, especially living outside the US because that means I definitely have to rely on e-Bay to get any rare figure. As I said before, there is nothing wrong with exclusives, what’s wrong is that stores order Hasbro a limited number of them or Hasbro just makes a limited number for whatever reason. Instead of making 50,000 Lava Vaders or Articulated Clones, make 250,000 or more… Can’t they realize that they will make 5 times more money?

I came back from C3 hoping to exchange one of my C3 Vaders for a Lava Vader (which by the way was $8.00 more expensive than the Lava Vader at retail, with the case)… no one on e-Bay wanted to accept the trade. To me that says it all, none of the people I offered it to was a collector, ok, maybe a couple who told me that they already had it, but the rest were just not interested in even getting it so I assume they were scalpers.

There should be like a Club or something that guarantees real collectors one of every exclusive out there. Too bad I just don’t see how that can happen, but if someone has an idea please let me know. I remember back in C2 I finally got the Darth Maul Speeder Electronic Game that has a rare Maul figure. I paid 60 bucks for it back then. I knew it was a lot but I’m glad I bought it back then because the only one I saw at C3 was selling for 250 bucks!!! It should be available to everyone for the $29.99 it originally cost.

I really wish everyone good luck getting all these hard to get items, and if you see more than one rare or exclusive figure get it for a friend you know needs it, but don’t take advantage and become one of those undercover thieves who we all hate a.k.a. as scalpers. If scalping concert and sports events tickets is a crime, shouldn’t scalping collectibles be a crime also?

Cheezeits Poster Not Cheezy!
May 4, 2005 | 9:45 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Dan sent this in today:

Hey all——–if you happened to send in for one of these they are
shipping. It is honestly one of the coolest looking posters I’ve seen in regards to ROTS. Very well done and the cheezits logo is very small and at the bottom and really doesn’t detract. I actually am debating framing it as the artwork is that nice on it.

Target Clone Trooper Feedback
May 4, 2005 | 9:37 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader DCL sent in his perspective on the Target Clone situation:

I wanted to write because as so many collectors I too have hit my local target here in sunny CA’s San Fernando Valley hoping to get just one clone trooper. No I did not get one, but yes I saw an ample supply for many fans to buy in 1 gentleman’s arms as he walked past me. I mistook him for someone who worked stocking shelves at target because he was actually carrying them in a cardboard “Hasbro” box. “I’ll grab one of those from you right now!” I said in an upbeat tone as we passed far from the toy aisle and so close to the register.
This guy gave me a look and said “these are mine” and followed it with a real **** off look on his face.
“are there any left?” I asked gesturing to the toy area. “not any more” he said followed by a guttural “huh huh” laugh, walking away as if I was the loser and he was the bigger better man.

I stood silent and dis hearted, I wanted to let loose on him, especially after I did once last month as I witnessed 2 guys the day after midnight madness at toys r us actually play blockers keeping 2, ten year old kid’s at bay as a 3rd guy hoarding all the “most wanted figures” from the pegs. They did not care or even hear me. Outrageous! This time I t decided to be cool and let my venting be a letter to your websight and in hopes you post this story as I believe in your collect to collect policies and remind people that the toy’s are out there… somewhere and not to increase these slime’s businesses by paying big money for toys now…be patient, I have amassed a collection to rival anyone’s but it is for myself and sure sometimes it takes weeks, months and in some cases years (as in my newly acquired FAO exclusive Famba) but when I do find my wanted figures they are at normal retail prices and it feels good.

Jason in SC had better luck, here’s his report:

I had good luck today in Anderson, SC. I went to the Target and punched in the figure’s DCPI number into their price check scanners they have on the ends of the aisles and it showed that the exclusive Clone Troopers were in stock. I asked a lady to go and see if they were indeed there and told her I wanted two and she came back with them in her hand. They also had all of the new wave figures (3’3/4” and deluxe expect for the AT-TE tank gunner). That number is 087061489. Go try it and see if it works for you.

Finally Yak Reader Scott took a more analytical approach:

Like everyone else I have been scouring all the local Targets in my area (I live in Atlanta) looking for the “elusive exclusive” Target Clonetrooper. Today I checked with the service counter and they told me there was initially a street date of May 8 for these, but they have received an email from corporate indicating that if people ask for them specifically, they can be sold before then.

However, among multiple stores I called, most report they have sold what they have gotten in.

I started checking prices on Ebay and I have come to this conclusion. Since April 20th approximately 1200 auctions have taken place. There are approximately 300 going on now. Initially prices started at around $40 a pop, but they have dropped to a low of $16 to $17 a figure.

Now then, if you figure that some of those auctions are actually the Cup and Trooper set, and likewise assume an average of 3 troopers per auction (which may balance out the numbers for people selling cases) that adds up to roughly 5000 units.

The production numbers for these are at 50,000 so that still leaves (theoretically) 45,000 of these figures out there. With the price dropping like it is, I think the scalpers will soon start seeing it’s no longer lucrative to sell a $13 figure for a profit of $2, especially if we all are patient and refuse to buy on Ebay.

Just one man’s opinion, but perhaps this will give some hope to those like myself who can’t find this guy.

Revenge of the Scalpers Leads to Custom Clones
May 4, 2005 | 12:52 PM EST | Keri

A fellow YakReader and collector wrote in to share his wonderful custom Clone creations, which took form after disappointments regarding heavy reports of scalping the Target exclusive Clone Trooper. He writes in to say “Since I can’t find the exclusive Target Clone Trooper (I heard that people in my area were buying anywhere from 12-30 at a time) and I don’t plan on finding one, I thought I’d make my own clones. Enjoy!”

Not only are the customs very well done, but it definitely is a healthier alternative rather than complaining or spending extra money to buy one on Ebay, therefore supporting scalping as a whole.

PS2 Game Missing Ticket
May 3, 2005 | 8:27 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader ANBAfansent in this report and question:

“Last week’s target circular from April 24-30th had the PS2 and Xbox versions of Lego Starwars advertised for $39.99 each and included a free movie ticket to see episode 3. I bought a copy of the ps2 version yesterday and saw clearly that the pricetag stated that the free ticket was packaged INSIDE the game.
When i opened up the game at home the ticket was nowwhere to be found!! I was wondering if you can post this topic on the main page and see if any other Yakface readers fell to the same trap that I did. I complained to target regarding the matter and wanted them to either refund me the value of the movie voucher or let me return the game all together eventhough it was opened.
This is false advertising in targets part and though I patronize them at least 4 times a week this upsets me that target would make this mistake.”

Drop us an Email and let us know if this was an isolated incident or more tickets were missing.

Target Exclusive Clones Update
May 3, 2005 | 7:51 PM EST | Bill

Start checking your Target stores NOW! We’ve confirmed at the manager handling the toy area at a local Target that corporate apparently sent out Emails to employees saying there is NO STREET DATE on the Target Clone Troopers. This manager reported they’ve gotten in and sold 2 cases already, and he has no idea if they will get more. Good luck!

MORE UPDATES:

Yak Reader Erik sent this in:

I just read your update on the clonetroopers street date. I’ve been hunting at targets all over the Las Vegas area, specifically about 5 different locations. So far there have been 2 cases each at 3 different stores put on shelves and sold within a couple of hours. One store had pegs with the actual item number and price for them at the top right of all the pegs with the 3 ¾” figures, while another store just placed them on an endcap next to their newly arrived battle arena sets. I’ve spoken to several employees at each one that expressed disappointment about not limiting customers to just one, with some customers buying up to 4 or 5 at once. All of the employees I spoke with initially thought the figures wouldn’t be released until ‘may or june’ and were shocked and disappointed to find out they came into work that day and the figures were already sold out. just thought I’d let you know!

C3 Vader Reports Update
May 3, 2005 | 7:48 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader DBC503 sent in this report:

I just got my order today and they arrived dead mint. I have heard a lot of reports of damaged ones showing up so I thought I would send in an email. My order was from 4/28 and did not include the cases. They were wrapped real nice in bubble wrap. Only problem was my free gift of the Sith promo card was missing and crossed off my invoice with no explanation. Small price to pay for case fresh figures. Hopefully more people have the same experience!

Tattooed Jedi and Sith
May 3, 2005 | 5:46 PM EST | Keri

While we await an upcoming article on starwars.com regarding the tattoo contest and winners that were crowned at Celebration III, PAIN Magazine has a nice online article regarding Star Wars fans and their ink.

From arm sleeves to entire pieces that encompass a back, this article has great photos and an interesting look at the fans who choose to sacrifice their own flesh to Star Wars imagery. It also makes mention of a great website devoted to Star Wars and other Toy related tattoos, which is Shane Turgeon’stattoosandtoys.com Shane’s site has amassed an extensive gallery of Star Wars tattoo art for everyone to enjoy which I find to be impressive, most impressive.

To read the article entitled “Star Tats” in PAIN Magazine, click the link here.

C3 Vaders Arriving From Star Wars.com
May 1, 2005 | 9:19 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader’s Troxey C3 Vader arrived somewhat worse for wear. Hopefully this is an isolated incident. Here’s his report:

I just got my C3 Vader from Starwars.com and it is completely smashed. The star case and the top of the figure bubble are both very damaged. The box it was sent in is very narrow. It barely looks wide enough to hold the figure and case. Needless to say I am very disappointed.

Target Figure Cases Update
May 1, 2005 | 9:16 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader CrunchyNug sent in this analysis:

I just read your post about people having problems with their new Target collector cases. Here’s the problem. There are actually TWO different cases – one that came with the exclusive Lava Vader and one that came with the exclusive Clone Trooper. They are different. The Vader case does not fit the new cards, whereas the Clone case does fit the new cards. Unfortunately, the 5-packs being offered contain the Vader cases. I hope that Hasbro has caught on and fixes the problem soon. On another note, the Clone case is MUCH more sturdy than the Vader case.

May 1, 2005 | 8:21 PM EST | Scott

These were two of the cooler freebies available at Celebration III. The first one being a collaboritive effort on behalf of the Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting SocietyThe Ohio Star Wars Collectors Club and the DC Metro Area Star Wars Collecting Club.

Each club offered one “pie slice” of a larger patch which, when combined, formed this awesome graphic of Vader’s flaming head. The Ohio and Pennsylvania patches could be easily had at their Fan Fair booth, but the DC patch was the “chase” piece of the set. You had to spot the DC rep sporting a T-Shirt with a logo of the patch on it somewhere in the convention center. No small task given the thousands of fans on hand. One of the coolest aspects of the piece is that it’s officially licensed by Lucasfilm! Way to go to anyone who scored a complete set.

Second was this neat Lance Armstrong style rubber wristband given away by the Star Wars Shop / Pride Displays booth. This cool little piece has Revenge of the Sith embossed on one side and starwarsshop.com on the other. They were offered in Adult and Children’s sizes.

The Force was with him!

Today, Jeff Gordon won the Aaron’s 499 Nascar race… his car made the whole race without incident and what makes it even more special is that Yoda was his co-pilot! Well sort of, his car was adorned with a huge graphic of the Jedi Master on the hood and he even gave Star Wars and Episode III a nice “plug” when he was in the winners’ circle. WAY TO GO YODA!… I mean Jeff.

Target Star Case Reports Update
May 1, 2005 | 12:16 AM EST | Bill

We’ve gotten an Email box full of reports following-up on our story earlier this week about problems with the Target exclusive Star Cases. A few Yak Readers report that they have had no problems if the bubble is placed perfectly on the card, however most have echoed our initial report, that the cases tend to be too short, causing varing degrees of bending to the hanging hook on the card.

Do The Frozen Dew Darth!
May 1, 2005 | 12:13 AM EST | Bill

Tomorrow is supposed to be the official release day for the 7-11 Darth Vader Slupree cups and cup toppers, however a lot of stores started selling them today. The topper is a mini-bust of Darth Vader similar to the Episode 1 Taco Bell cup toppers (although it’s thinner material). There are also 4 lenticular plastic cups to choose from as well. Also, 7-11 has released Darth Dew, a supposedly black slurpee (actually it’s dark purple).
