Episode 290: LEGO, My Star Wars

It’s been a big couple of weeks for fans of Star Wars and LEGOS! First, the fan-loved Lego Star Wars video game series had its third installment released. While the first two games covered the events from the movies, the Clone Wars TV Series has extended this franchise’s life as you can play LEGO mini-figs of Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Jar-Jar plus dozens more characters through the events of the first two seasons of the Clone Wars! Listen as Dan the Rockstar reviews this newest Star Wars video game!

But even more exciting for Star Wars Lego fans in southern California, Legoland just opened it’s Star Wars Miniland, and Star Wars Action News’ reporter Berent was on hand to cover the event with his son Pharoah, as well as talk to celebrities who share a love for Star Wars, including Gina Lee Nolan, Tony Hawk, Brooke Burke, and Christian Slater! And then Berent talks to Lego Master Builder Gary MacIntyre about the creation of this new LEGO park!

With Brock reviewing Paul S. Kemp’s new Old Republic novel Deceived, Jerry looking back at the history of Kenner, and Marjorie and Arnie finding more Star Wars collectibles in stores, it’s all this week on the Star Wars Action News podcast!

VC46 AT-RT Driver (VARIANT)

The Yakface Toyguide gets a quick update today with the addition of the newly discovered packaging variant for the AT-RT Driver from the Vintage Collection’s Wave 6.

This variation relocates the separately packaged backpack and attached it (upside down) to the figures back. Not sure why they went this route as it seems like an unnecessary change as well as making it look like the figure comes with less “stuff”. Anywho… just a heads up for those still interested in variants.

Vintage Distribution Nightmare Continues

For many collectors, it’s becoming more and more frustrating to find the new figures in The Vintage Collection at retail.

Instead, what we find are an increased dedication to Clone Wars and Legends, and stores even adding promotional space for those lines, like the image above provided by forumite Tsophika.

So, why is it that stores keep getting in more of those figures while ignoring Vintage? Why does TRU seem to have a sale every month promoting those lines, and ignoring Vintage? Why are we having to rely on online retailers now to get the new Vintage figures, but are being forced to purchase carry forward figures in those case assortments?

We invite all of our readers to sound off on your thoughts on these issues and how this is affecting your interest in the hobby in the forums.

VC37 Super Battle Droid

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the addition of the Super Battle Droid from the Vintage Collection’s Attack of the Clones wave (Wave 4).
PROS: Decent sculpt with Geonosis specific deco (at least on the legs). “Swirled” plastic helps convey the look of metal. Looks great on the Vintage cardback and the superfluous blaster pistol is great for customs or the parts bin.

CONS: Lacks the ankle joints present on the recent Geonosis Arena sculpt. Shoulder joints are still impossibly tight when trying to position them laterally.

VC36 Senate Guard (Update)

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with the addition of the Senate Guard from the Vintage Collection’s Attack of the Clones wave (Wave 4).
PROS: Best. Soft Goods. Ever. Hasbro’s design team managed to select a fabric to use for the guard’s inner and outer robe that looks like it was sampled right from the costume itself. Even though the underlying figures is 6 years old, the improvements to the articulation, sculpt and deco give it new life.

CONS: Robes are slightly longer than necessary, but nothing a little creative posing can’t remedy

Update: Alternate cardback images added.

VC49 Fi-Ek Sirch (Jedi Knight)

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the addition of Fi-Ek Sirch (Jedi Knight); the final figure from the Vintage Collection’s Wave 6.
PROS: Hasbro went “all-in” in addressing the problems of the original Nikto Jedi. This all new figure is loaded with articulation (except ball-joint hips), features an excellent sculpt and has the coolest robe of any Jedi available thus far thanks to Hasbro’s choice of fabric.

CONS: None. Buy it!
