Lucas Gives Details on E3 and E7-9… 20+ Years Ago
August 31, 2003 | 12:41 PM EST | Bill

The following is an excerpt from Time Magazine’s May 23, 1983 edition (describing Lucas’ plans after Jedi had been completed. The “spoilers” spoilers about E1 and E2 are not “hidden”, however to stay spoiler free, details about E3 and E7-9 are hidden. Highlight to read the spolers:

“He will also read and write, retreating to what Marcia [his wife] calls his “tree-house environment,” a little suite in a former carriage house a few steps away from the rest of their Victorian-style home in San Anselmo. There, near his Mickey Mouse phone, his Wookie pencil holder and his telescope, he has books on mythology, like Jose Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, and five three-ring notebooks, in which he has written notes on the history of Star Wars, past, present, and future.

The films that record what went on in the beginning-if they are ever made- will be altogether different in look and tone from the existing trilogy, says Lucas. They will be more melodramatic, showing the political intrigue and Machiavelian plotting that led to the downfall of the once noble Republic. They will have only enough outward action to keep the plot moving. Obi-Wan Kenobi, the elderly Jedi was played by Alec Guinness in the Star Wars series, and Darth Vader will be seen as younger men, while Luke Skywalker may make a brief appearance as a baby in Episode III

The sequels, the three movies that would follow Jedi, are considerably vaguer. Their man theme will be the necessity for moral choices and the wisdom needed to distinguish right from wrong. There was never any doubt in the films already made; in those the lines were sharply drawn, comic-book-style. Luke, who will then be the age of Obi-Wan Kenobi is now, some place in his 60’s, will reappear and so will his friends, assuming that the creator decides to carry the epic further. Hamill and the others will get first crack at the roles-if they look old enough.

The abundant fantasy on the screen is a mere sliver of Lucas’ imaginary universe. Behind any creature may be a little volume of fable or cultural anthropology. Chewbacca is a favorite of Lucas’, and he can go on and on about the Wookie tribe. They come from a damp jungle planet where they reside in tree houses and live to be 350 years old. The six-breasted females deliver their offspring in littlers. After an invasion by Imperial forces, which may be alluded to in the “prequel,” the Wookies were rounded up by slave traders and sold throughout the Empire. Chewy was rescued by Han Solo and installed as his copilot. Got that?”End Spoilers.

New Doug Chang Book
August 31, 2003 | 10:34 AM EST | Mark B

I ran across a really cool new book today that people who enjoy the “Art of Star Wars” Books should really enjoy. It is a new hardcover that was co-written by the Art Designer for Star Wars Episode I – Doug Chang. Robota by Doug Changis about a world that is being taken over by the Robot population (sounds like a cross between The Matrix, Terminator, and Blade Runner from what I have read about it so far). Check out Robota by Doug Chang today!

A Bunch of Episode III Spoilers
August 27, 2003 | 9:49 AM EST | Mark B

Overall, I’m trying to avoid hearing and seeing too much about Episode III (I’d like some of it to be a surprise!), but every now and then I can’t help but read some juicy little tidbits about the movie. I won’t post any of them here, but over at The Force.Net they have a great Episode III section that includes a bunch of reports about some details of the last Star Wars movie. For example, you can learn a little more about Anakin’s transformation to Darth Vader, a character we haven’t seen since “A New Hope”, and even the colors of Anakin’s lightsabers. If you are trying to stay completely spoiler free – you have been warned.

Store Finds
August 24, 2003 | 6:03 PM EST | Steve

My wife and I just got back from vacation, and I was able to hit quite a few stores.

First, I snagged the Count Dooku Geonosian Escape for $1.99 at KayBee here in Cumberland, Maryland.

A KayBee outlet store in Gettysburg had some newer figures for $2.99, including Anakin Tatooine Attack, Darth Maul Sith Training, and Dooku Geonosian Escape. They had the 4-packs for $7.99, and a few Darth Maul Unleashed for $7.99.

Wal-Mart had a few of the Ponda Baba Cantina sets for $1.00, but the cards were very, very non-mint.

At Toys R Us, I found the Clone Wars Gunship and ONE carded Destroyer Droid with launcher. I didn’t buy the DD because I was really interested in finding the other 3-packs.

Just when I thought the trip was a loss, I found all four Clone War multi-packs, the Clone Wars Jedi Starfighter, and the new C-3PO and Jango Fett re-issues. They had about four empty pegs where the new figures should have been, and there was only one each of 3PO and Fett. But, at $4.79 each it’s no surprise they had all but disappeared.

To those that have not lost power, it was worse than a storm that knocks out a city, we could not go two blocks down and get anything, the nearest place with any power and gas was an hour away and they had two hour lines. Anyway, glad to be back and again, we hope those that do not have power get theirs back soon.

How much are Jedi Points worth?
August 12, 2003 | 12:59 PM EST | Jason

Well, it seems that a few people are dumping their Jedi Points
now on Ebay. From the few auctions that have closed… prices
are averaging around $.15 to $.20 per 10 points. Only time will
tell if the prices people are willing to pay for points translates
to a good deal/decision in terms of what you will be able to buy with
points when the auction goes live in September.

Let us know how many points you have so far, if you bothered to
actually open some of your toys.

2004 List Update
August 10, 2003 | 10:33 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Eric sent in this report:

“Fellow Yakfacers,

I printed out the list from “The Private Universe” and personally discussed several of the items with the gentleman at the Hasbro Display at Wizard World Chicago. Here’s what they told me:

The next three Cantina Alien Scenes (Wuher, Kitik Keedlak and Dr. Evazan) were produced, and are waiting for a retailer to pick them up in the near future. Wal-Mart was the intended retailer, but that is no longer the case, and the reason for the delay.

The Yavin Hanger Accessory pack is in some stage of production, but the packaging format and content has not been determined yet. It could show up similar to the Imperial Forces or Ultimate Bounty Hunter Multi-packs, or in the old format accessory packs that Target received a while back. Nothing is definite yet, but it sounds as if the Multi-pack format is more realistic for all of these types of offerings. As far as the Jabba’s Dungeon and Gungun Defense sets go, they could fall in the same category, but even though there have been prototype pictures of all three of these on the internet recently, there are no guarantees that they will be produced. It sounds like a new 3 3/4″ Gammorean Guard figure is in the process of being produced from what I was told.

When I mentioned the Endor Celebration with C-3P0 and Death Star Station with Imperial Gunner, both of the Hasbro representatives had a good long laugh, both they said are not in production and no plans for these were ever in the works and are strictly fan-rumored.

The Droid Factory didn’t ring any bells with the designers either, but they both recalled that someone was designing the CZ-1 droid figure which they both referred to as the “clown Droid.”

Other items we discussed included why the Republic Gunship didn’t have the “gun bubbles” with figures in them. Basically the design of the ship at Lucasfilm was changed in the “eleventh hour” after the toy was produced in mass quantities. There will be a large deluxe version of Jabba the Hutt in 2004 – they couldn’t give me any specifics, but assured me that collectors will be happy. And lastly the Sandcrawler will be released at some point, but they made several distinct improvements on the old mold from the ’70’s.”

Jar Jar for Gov. of California?
August 8, 2003 | 1:14 PM EST | Mark B

With the recall election going on in California, it’s time for all the comedy shows to poke some fun at it. Star Wars got a mention last night on the Daily Show on Comedy Central. Their thought was California needs a candidate with a little more political experience. So why not Jar Jar Binks?? Come on! With $3500 and 65 signatures anyone can be on the ballot in California! Wouldn’t you love to see it come down to Jar Jar against Palpatine!?!?!?

editors note – this is all said in fun, I am in no way advocating that anyone try to get any Star Wars characters on the California ballot. – MB

New Statues from Dark Horse Comics
August 7, 2003 | 9:25 PM EST | Mark B

Read the whole story at Star Wars.com about Dark Horse Comics offering 2 new statues to Star Wars Fans – It looks like they are going to start offering the Kotobukiya kits in the US!!! And at $99.99 that’s a lot less than some online stores have been selling them for! The first one they are bringing is in the Darth Vader. Also new from Gentle Giant Studios (sold through Dark Horse Comics) is a new realscan bust of Greedo. Photos of the items are at the official site. (More than likely you will be able to preorder these items next month from a dealer who buys from Diamond Comics – but just a fair warning – the Clonetrooper Busts were seriously OVERSOLD and a lot of dealers are being shorted on them – so be careful with Presells).

Master Replicas Adds Another Line
August 7, 2003 | 9:40 AM EST | Mark B

I just received an email from Master Replicas announcing they have finalized a deal with 20th Century Fox to make replicas from both the Aliens and the Predator Movies. Great news for fans of these franchises. Personally, I’d love to have one of the Marine pulse rifles from Aliens – “Game over man, game over!”.

In A Galaxy Not So Far Far Away
August 6, 2003 | 12:41 PM EST | Mark B

While not exactly Star Wars related, this is a must see for people everywhere. During August, the planet Mars is going to be closer to Earth than it has been in nearly 60,000 years (yeah, that’s right, 60 THOUSAND YEARS). So, pick a night to turn off that computer monitor and head outside with your family or friends and take a look at the red planet like you have never seen it before. I know I’m getting my telescope ready to check it out. Quite a bit of information is available about the event over at Space.com.

Ultimate Bounty Variant/Error – Bossk
August 5, 2003 | 8:33 PM EST | George

Our good friend Aaron from POTF informing:
”POTF2.COM has posted pics of a major variant/error on Bossk from the Ultimate Bounty 4-Pack. He is missing both shoulder emblems. This was found on multiple 4-Packs so it may be an intentional change to the figure.

Check it out here -».

Thanks for the heads up Aaron, for those who asked I’m alive and kicking. I’ve been working on some non SW related side photo/web projects but I’m back!! Feel FREE to E-mail me.

Attention Down Under
August 3, 2003 | 6:31 PM EST | Bill

This just in from the New Zealand Fan Club:

SWNZ (Star Wars fans & collectors of New Zealand), Click here to check out, has been around for a few years now, but has recently undergone an extensive redesign, with new staff coming on board to fulfill a new focus. SWNZ is a website built by New Zealanders for New Zealanders (to support and encourage all Star Wars related hobbies), but has international appeal in that it highlights the unique contribution made by New Zealand and New Zealanders to the Star Wars Universe, and will chronicle regional events and collectibles not available elsewhere. One of our principal goals is to strive for original content (we see no need to mimic that which is already done well by the large, well-established SW sites such as Yakface), but we maintain tight links and affiliations to like-minded websites.

A Traditional Wedding Outfit
August 1, 2003 | 3:23 PM EST | Mark B

Yakface reader Rich pointed out to us today that the Secret Ceremony Amidala is a VERY accurate Traditional Wedding Outfit. Complete down to the garter. Which brings 3 questions to my mind? 1. Does Anakin hang it from the rear view mirror of his speeder? 2. Does Anakin drag all the Jedi out together and see who can catch it when he tosses it? 3. Why was Rich looking?!?!?!? 🙂
