Toyguide Update: Boba Fett (McQuarrie Concept) Mini Bust (SDCC 2009 Exclusive)

TG_concept_fett_bust_preview

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today as we take a look at the 2009 SDCC Exclusive Boba Fett (McQuarrie Concept) Mini Bust from Gentle Giant.

PROS:  As a huge fan of anything related to Ralph McQuarrie, this item struck a chord with me back in 2009 although I only just acquired it recently due to my new and expanding “Concept/Prototype Boba Fett” collection of items. The sculpt and details of this piece captures McQuarrie’s original concept masterfully and the inclusion of the swappable helmet is the perfect touch as it give collectors options for displaying. Paint is minimal, yet effective as the overall off-white, egg shell color gives it a used “in-universe” look.

CONS: Long since sold out, the aftermarket/third party prices on this piece are elevated but there are deals out there to be had from time to time. If you really want to add this piece to your collection, I suggest having a “saved search” on eBay.

Toyguide Update: Emperor Palpatine Mini Bust (2015 PG Gift)

palpatine_bust_TGpreview

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today as we take a look at the Exclusive 2015 Premier Guild Gift Emperor Palpatine (The Empire Strikes Back) Mini Bust from Gentle Giant.

PROS:  Sculpt and paint is well done – especially the robes – with a lot of texture and simulated cloth conveyed through the polyresin material. There are no brittle/thin parts (canes/fingers) to risk damage.

CONS: It is the most basic of the 3 available gift busts available for 2015  PG members. The likeness (while good) is not nearly as definitive as the Darth Sidious but is better than the Return of the Jedi sculpt from 2012. The relaxed pose doesn’t seem fitting for Empire more like something you’d see from The Phantom Menace.

Toyguide Update: Luke Skywalker Snowspeeder Pilot Deluxe Mini Bust (2013 PGM Exclusive)

PGM_luke_DLXbust_preview

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today as we take a look at the PGM Exclusive Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder Pilot) Deluxe Mini Bust from Gentle Giant.

PROS:  I really enjoy the Deluxe Mini Busts for their versatility in display options so this PGM variant gets high praise due to its extra lightsaber wielding arm. The inclusion of the separate lightsaber hilt is a nice touch as well as it can be worn on the belt or held in one of the interchangeable arms. The paint deco is quite good with few blemishes or sloppy applications. The texture of the coat looks fantastic and almost appears to have a wet, snow soaked look. The helmet treatment is also very good as the deco is very crisp (although maybe a bit too clean) and the visor completes the look.

CONS: Being strictly a PGM exclusive may have ruffled a few feathers when it was announced, especially after the General Veers Deluxe Mini Bust kerfufel last year. I couldn’t help but think that this deluxe version could have also benefitted from the inclusion of the grenade used to take out the AT-AT. It would have been a great accessory to pair with the exclusive Lightsaber arm.
