SOTE for Gamecube?!?
November 29, 2001 | 11:44 PM EST | John

Remember when you first brought home the N64? Remember how amazed you were with the then “state-of-the-art” graphics? Remember how you popped in your “Shadows Of The Empire” cartridge and played for hours on top of hours? Remember how, when you couldn’t get past the IG-88 part, you shoved a roll of toilet paper and open tin of baked beans in the cartridge port then threw it out a 28 story window? Ok… maybe not the last part, but my point is that we all loved SOTE when it first came out. It was the game to play.

With the release of “Rogue Squadron II; Rogue Leader”, some fans are seeing the graphics and wondering; “What would SOTE be like on Gamecube?” And that, my friends, is what prompted this petition. Personally, I’d love to see it done. Kind of like “Mario All-Stars” for the Super Nintendo rehashing all the original NES 8-bit Mario platform games but hopped-up for the 16-bit environment. Interested Yakkers? To sign the petition, click here, sign up, and that’s all there is too it!

Wal-Mart Ditching SW Figures?!? …Nah!
November 28, 2001 | 12:27 PM EST | John

In the last few months we’ve seemed to have gotten a few direct or at least a side-mentioning of this topic, and I think it must be addressed. This is the most current letter we’ve gotten. It’s from “Jedi Jake”, and goes a little something like this;

“I went to one of my local Wal-Marts the other day and I couldn’t help but notice there wasn’t a Star Wars section anywhere. I asked a clerk and they said that they aren’t going to be carrying the line anymore. At the other two Wal-Marts by me (Albany, NY) the same thing seems to be happening. Do you know why this is happening? And is it the same for all the Wal-Marts across the country? This is really frustrating, because that is where I got most of my figures from.”

Now, this happens every year around the same time. Towards the beginning of summer to late autumn there is a severe deficit of toys, and Star Wars is not immune. They will restock in time for Christmas. Any news of Wal-Mart not “carrying” Star Wars anymore is a lie. Chances are it’s only idiot stock-people (note I said “idiot” stock-people, not all stock-people…) who like to see people get worked up then laugh about it later. With the approach of Episode II, Wal-Mart would be pretty stupid not to carry the new unified line. Another problem is changing SKU’s. It may look like they’re not going to carry Star Wars at all, and all along it turns out that it’s just a case of SKU’s being changed on the packaging. So, fret not!

Virus Warning for Outlook Users
November 27, 2001 | 6:24 PM EST | Adam

I’d like to apologize for taking up valuable Star Wars news space for this, but having been pounded with the virus myself, it seemed appropriate to share this news story with you.

A worm, “Badtrans,” has been infecting Outlook and Outlook Express email applications and it logs your personal information. The worm transmits itself by self-launching and as apparently, there is no actual damage that can be done to your system– it’s an information thief.

I have yet to find if this affects all operating systems or just Windows, but here’s a story at CNN with more details.

We now return you to… uh… us.

TPE runs away with FOX ratings!
November 27, 2001 | 12:10 PM EST | John

Found this little tidbit over at The Hollywood Reporter. It may have recently lost out to Harry Potter, but Episode I ruled the airwaves (or would that be cable-waves?) on Sunday!

“Fox was the primetime master Sunday as its world TV premiere airing of “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” blew away the competition on the final Sunday of the November sweep. Fox’s 7-10 p.m. airing of “Phantom Menace” averaged 17.6 million viewers and a 7.9 rating/18 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. Fox won the night in adults 18-34, teens and other key young demos. “Phantom Menace” opened up with a solid 14.4 million viewers and a 6.4/17 in the demo at 7 p.m., peaking from 9-9:30 p.m. with 19.4 million viewers and an 8.7/19 in adults 18-49.”

Episode II DVD talk already?!?
November 27, 2001 | 12:06 PM EST | John

Maybe… This report comes from “JMB3”, of which I thank for the tip. It seems that DVD France has listed some interesting information involving the time frame of release of the Episode II DVD. Now, the below text has been translated from French, so it’s a bit choppy. But you get the idea.

“Nov. 26 2001 — You will not be able to say that you were not well-informed! Because indeed, the DVD of Star Wars Episode II, the attack of the clones is indeed planned… Do not pay too attention to the jacket above, because it is obviously false. On the other hand, which is true (in any case, that circulates much in the corridors of FPE…), it is that contrary to the phantom Threat, we will not have to wait two years before being able to taste the attack of the clones in DVD. This time, George Lucas is well decided to benefit immediately from the usual time imposed on the video outputs. Then small fast equation: since the film comes out on our screens on May 17 2002 and that in France the legal minimum time between an output rooms and an output video is 6 months, that gives us on November 17 2002. Moreover since the film comes out in the whole world in the neighbourhoods of May 17, one can think that the DVD will be the subject of a world output.”

Now everyone, we all know what “official sources” means, and this is by no means an official source. So, we’re going to mark this with a big R-U-M-O-R until after the release of the film and we hear for certain the video release dates.

Black Friday Bonanza
November 23, 2001 | 1:44 AM EST | Adam

On the biggest shopping day of the year, we’d like to turn to you, the readers, for the reports from the trenches. Toys “R” Us is having their old Star Wars stock down to 2 for $3 (along with old X-Men movie stock, Pokemon, and Avengers.)

Since many of these products have been blown out by TRU already, the question is, will anyone find anything cool? If you see a Holo Sidious, Pit Droids, or something as equally groovy, we want to hear about it– let us know in our store reports area, or drop us a line if you find something extra gnarly. As the kids say.

Dewback, Dreamcast Drops Confirmed
November 23, 2001 | 1:40 AM EST | Adam

Fans of all things great (and not-so-great),

We’ve gotten more reports of the Toys “R” Us Dewback dropping to $29.99 in stores, and it seems to be pretty much all over. In the off chance you missed our story earlier or your store actually runs out, you can still order the ugly bugger online at Amazon.com for $29.98 and shipping.

Also, the ill-fated yet still marvelous Sega Dreamcast console has officially dropped to $49.99 in most stores as of Wednesday, so if you need a fairly priced game console to tide you over, there’s a few Star Wars titles to be had, as well as Jet Grind Radio and Crazi Taxi, so you don’t have to have an Xbox or GameCube to get new games this year… unless you have a Dreamcast. (Also available at Amazon.com.)

More Star Wars Jr. Pics– Are They Coming?
November 23, 2001 | 1:33 AM EST | Adam

Shawn from Cybertron City sent us a link to his site with some fantastic Hasbro 2002 shots– the new GI Joe vs. Cobra line is shown, totally painted, some great new toys from other lines… and what may be the initial releases of the Star Wars Jr. Range.

http://cybertroncity.com/modules/Gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=album32

It’s entirely possible the reports of the line’s death have been greatly exaggerated… the images show the following amazingly awesome sets:

#1: Naboo Fighter, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Pilot Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul, Battle Droid
#2: 2 Speederbikes, Wicket, Biker Scout, Luke (Endor)
#3: X-Wing, Luke (pilot), R2-D2, Darth Vader
#4: Wampa, Tauntaun, Luke (Hoth), Han (Hoth)

This is, to say the least, a great find. Shawn, thanks for the pics, and Hasbro… we just can’t wait to get our mitts on these, so if you’ve got a release date, do share!

Another 12″ Dewback Drop?
November 22, 2001 | 3:02 AM EST | Adam

A tidbit from Reader Mike…

“I’m not sure if this is old news or not, but I was a my local Toys R Us (in Erie, PA) today and they had the 12″ Dewback and Sandtrooper marked down to only $29.95 from $79.99!”

Yowza! It’s entirely possible this is going to be all over, especially with the holidays, so it might be worth your while braving the madness that is Black Friday to score one!

Trailer Updates
November 20, 2001 | 8:44 PM EST | Bill

A number of Yak Readers have written about the E2 trailer which is supposed to appear with Harry Potter, or rather the absence of the trailer.

Yak Reader Bryan wrote:

I talked to a manager last night after I DIDN’T get to see the teaser in front of Harry Potter. His explanation was a lot more convincing than “told to pull it” or “did not recieve it.” He told me that they only received a certain number of prints, and since they were showing Harry Potter on a record number of screens (for this theater) that some showings got left out when the math was done.

Yak Reader EVILCHUK sent this in:

Corona coming attractions did a bit on the trailer a week or so ago. General Cinemas for example have it, but are holding it in their vaults. Here in San Antonio, Texas, I saw the trailer wwith Harry Potter at a Santikos theatre.

Yak Reader Joe’s experiences even more frustrating:

Sunday we called Hoyts’ cinema in
Clifton Park Center Mall, Clifton Park, NY, to see if it was playing in front of Harry Potter. They said it was playing with all three prints of the movie. So we went to a 12:30 showing today expecting to see the trailer but to our horror and dismay it was not there! Needless to say I was pissed. I tried to keep myself calm and not focus in on what happened to try to enjoy the movie. After the movie ended we promptly walked up to the manager and told him what was going on. We said we called and were told that it was playing with all the prints. He said that was wrong, and that it was only in
theater 1 and the next showing in their was at 6:10. We asked him if we could come back to just watch the trailer. He agreed and we go about trying to kill 2 1/2 hours. At 5:45 we go in to the theater and tell the kid at the ticket booth that we got the manager’s O.K. to go in just to watch the trailer. We show him our ticket stubs and he says we have to wait 10 to 15 inutes before we can go in because they have to clean it. 15 minutes go by, we start to head in and the kid says there’s no trailer. I point out to the kid the huge Episode II teaser banner on the wall and we tell him what the manager said. He goes to fetch the manager and the manager comes out and says that he just talked to his projectionist and they don’t have it. This makes no sense! They have the banner but no trailer.

Yak Reader Dave got some very different information from his theater:

I believe that for those wishing to see the (incredible) trailer for
“Attack of the Clones at an AMC Theater, it is being shown with the new Jet Li movie called “The One”. That’s the scoop here in Kansas City anyway. Why they took it off “Harry Potter” is quite beyond my capacity.

In short it looks like the best advice is if you are going to see Harry Potter just for th E2 trailer, then it would be a good idea to ask first and be sure they are showing it.

Harry Potter Trailer Hit And Miss
November 19, 2001 | 8:54 AM EST | Bill

Several Yak readers have written in to say that they went to see Harry Potter and DID NOT see the new trailer with it. They have been given a number of reasons from the theater did not receive the trailer to they were told to pull it. It appears that the bottom line is that if you are going to see Harry Potter to see the trailer, ask the theater first and be sure they are showing it. Thanks to Dave an everyone else who wrote in.

Toys “R” Us Receives More Episode One Toys
November 18, 2001 | 5:50 PM EST | Adam

Roughly two and a half years after the line’s debut, a local Toys “R” Us here in Tucson has just gotten more of the oft-missed Invasion assortment with all four vehicles– including the somewhat tough to find Gungan Scout Sub with Obi-Wan and the awesome Sith Attack Speeder with Darth Maul. While kitschy off-screen creations, the price was right: $1.97 a pop. (Beat that.)

We haven’t had many widespread reports of these showing up everywhere again, but it definitely looks like a good time to check your local stores to see what’s finally getting out of the warehouses.

Rogue Leader: Impressions
November 18, 2001 | 5:47 PM EST | Adam

While you’ve probably read a ton of reviews on the game, let me just say that for the most part, everything you’ve read is true.

The new game, released for the GameCube (launched today, check your local stores for availability), is nothing short of fantastic. The training mode is you, a Skyhopper, and free access over Tatooine– find crashed a TIE fighter, Bantha herds, Dewbacks, shoot some Womp Rats… and that’s just the training mission. Killer, killer stuff.

The first stage has been in demo kiosks for a few weeks now, and well, it’s still a blast, if you’ll pardon the expression. Fantastic graphics, sound, and play control… and it’s in a Star Wars game for once.

If you have the means (or the parents to beg), this is something most Star Wars fans with even the slightest affinity toward video games need to have. And if you’ve got another fifty bucks to blow, allow me to reccomend Super Monkey Ball for multi-player fun.

Also, Best Buy stores are offering a deal on GameCube software: $10 off two games, or $20 off of three. Not a bad deal if you’ve got the dough to blow.

Rebel Trooper Wave Showing Up
November 16, 2001 | 12:37 PM EST | John

Yakker “Tony S.” writes to let us know that he picked up the Rebel Trooperfigure last night, which means that wave is starting to show up now in the US. But, he makes an interesting observation;

“Just got the Rebel Trooper figure and its helmet is GLUED ON!! That’s new to me. Last I heard they were removable.”

Thanks for the info, Tony. Anyone else spot this wave?

UPDATE – Tony never mentioned as to where he’s located or what store these figures were found in. Keep checking the local haunts, I.E. Target, WalMart, K-Mart, etc. to find these newest figures, and as always, don’t bend to scalper prices! Patience pays, young Jedi.

“Forbidden Love” Trailer at StarWars.Com
November 16, 2001 | 12:30 AM EST | John

As of 12:01 AM, StarWars.Com has made available for download at their site the Forbidden Love trailer that will allegedly be in front of the Harry Potter flick. I personally (John) have tried to connect to download this thing fromStarWars.Com, and it won’t connect to even let me view the site. I think they underestimated the bandwidth issue again, so you may have a better time finding this thing on a file sharing utility if you really can’t wait to see it from the official site. Good luck, folks!

Hasbro Updates Site, adds Toy Trailer
November 15, 2001 | 12:48 AM EST | Adam

Hasbro’s Star Wars Site updated with images of two of the three Silver Anniversary sets. Han & Chewie and Luke & Leia were posted, although it’s a fair bet you’ve already seen these elsewhere.

One thing you haven’t seen before, though, is a video file of Han & Chewie showing the toy from various angles. It’s the kind of thing one would expect from the “Bells & Whistles” era of the site around 1997… considering how rare updates are, this sort of thing was a real surprise.

E2 Banner
November 12, 2001 | 3:16 PM EST | Adam

Reader BillyFett pointed us out to his auction: 1484992668. It’s notable because it’s the Episode II teaser banner… Hayden & Natalie on a pretty dark red background. Odds are this is the real deal, and even though it’s coming from Thailand we expect to see these selling in the USA very soon.

UPDATE: This auction has since been removed.

Where to see Vader in the Teaser
November 8, 2001 | 10:31 PM EST | John

Ok, I’m probably beating this to death, so this is the final word on where Vader is in the Teaser Trailer. Many kind Yakkers out there have sent in photo’s outlining what they see, and all are identical. So, I used one sent in by my friend “ADAM” (not our Yakface Adam P.), of the TradeFederation.Net, (a very cool page indeed!). Thanks again, “ADAM”! But, for all those having problems, take a gander above. Enjoy all, and again, thanks to all those who sent images and wrote in!

More on Vader in the Teaser Trailer
November 8, 2001 | 3:16 PM EST | John

Ok, due to some mail I’ve had, I’ll specify where Vader is in the Teaser, and try to be a bit more explicit as to where to look; As Obi-Wan is flying across the screen with city-scape behind him, on the last couple frames of this you can see it in the buildings behind him. We all know what picture was used on the Darth Vader-Emperor’s Wrath Force-File, right? I’m 99% sure that that is the image that was injected into the scene. It’s there, it’s just very dark. You can’t make out his breathing mouth triangle, but you can clearly see the top of his helmet and down to under his pectoral area. It’s more of a shadow, really, but I could see the shine on his collar-bone silver strips that run from his neck/shoulders to his chest. This is really no big deal, just something cool that was thrown in, like the breathing. Many people have written to me that have found it, and a few just can’t seem to make it out. Freeze the trailer at that point and look directly in front of Obi-Wan’s face. It’s almost as big as him, only in the distance.

Want To Play Rogue Leader Today?
November 8, 2001 | 2:34 AM EST | Adam

Friends, are you wanting to play Rogue Leader, the new GameCube Star Wars title, right now? Worried you can’t find a GameCube on launch dya? Well, worry no more! Buzz around the web of a working GameCube mod to play Japanese games on a US system and vice-versa HAS BEEN FOUND!

News was posted at uber-news/store National Console Exchange, a fine store, as well as many others. NCS will be selling modded systems (able to play US and JPN software) for $275, and for do-it-yourself-ers, the mod is supposedly very easy to perform, roughly the same as installing the switch on a Saturn if you’re familliar with that. (Because we need our Salamander fixes.)

So if you’re worried you might not be able to find a US system– which, according to some sources, may not be a problem– here’s the solution. Enjoy!

Darth Vader in Episode II Teaser?!?
November 8, 2001 | 1:59 AM EST | John

That’s what it looks like, at least in this reporter’s humble opinion. “Lord Malakite” sends us this provocative information in which I’ve checked into, and son-of-a-gun if it doesn’t look like Vader’s there, kind of watching. I edited the information “Lord Malakite” sends us to make sure that this article is 100% spoiler-free. He writes;

“I was watching the trailer and noticed something. It appears that Darth Vader is possibly in the Trailer. He appears in last frame of Obi-Wan as he’s quickly flying across the screen, (just before the children in blue suits). It appears on the right side of him on the building. It is really noticable if you can download the large version. If you watch Obi’s expression in the whole sequence it looks like he is actually reacting to the image.”

I doubt it has anything to actually do with the storyline or anything at all for that matter. Lucas may have tossed this easter egg in the teaser to see how many people noticed. Perhaps it’s to go along with the breathing in the trailer itself… who knows. All I know is that, yes, Vader, or moreover something that looks inexplicably like Vader, is in the trailer. Food for thought… A HUGE thanks goes to “Lord Malakite” for sharing this weird information with us. Enjoy, folks!

2002 Lego K-Mart Shelf Tags?
November 8, 2001 | 1:42 AM EST | Adam

Reader JabbaTheSlutt sent us a few pages of scans of K-Mart shelf tags for some upcoming products. From the look of things, these are most likely (ok, fairly definitely) the new Lego sets. Highlight the following text to discover the names of the 2002 Lego sets and their prices. (Due to the Episode II items, we’ve decided to protect the spoiler-wary despite their odd nature to seek out Star Wars news pages that won’t share any real news.)

7103 Jedi Duel $9.98
7113 Tusken Raider Encounter $9.98
7119 Twin-Pod Cloud Car $9.98
7133 Bounty Hunter Pursuit $29.98
7139 Ewok Attack $12.88
7143 Jedi Starfighter $19.98
7153 Jango Fett’s Slave I $49.98
7163 Republic Gunship $84.99
7200 Final Duel I $6.98
7201 Final Duel II $6.98
7203 Jedi Defense I $6.98

We opted not to include the scans, but the information is interesting if nothing else. Most of the stuff is pretty fairly priced, it seems… can’t wait for the Cloud Car!

November 8, 2001 | 12:45 AM EST | John

They claim that this is a slight transition of what is to come with the new “generalized” blue packaging that will be making a debut next spring sometime before Episode II. Hop on overto read the full article.

Amanaman Hits Hong Kong
November 5, 2001 | 11:57 AM EST | John

Only short weeks after the original case assortment of deluxe figures hits the American shelves, reports are coming to us that the Amanaman has hit in Hong Kong. This usually means within a month they’ll be being spotted in the States. My question? Where is Sail-Barge Leia? I’ve heard from a couple different sources that Amanaman is in this new lot, but nothing on Slave Leia. More on this as we get it…

Teaser Trailer: Rocks
November 3, 2001 | 12:45 AM EST | Adam

While you’ve probably heard about it or you went out and saw it, I just want to take the time to say that the Attack of the Clones teaser is an amazing piece of work. I was a little surprised by what got stuck in there, and frankly, can’t wait to see it again.

(For the curious, Monsters Inc. wasn’t as great as I was hoping it would be but it was still an enjoyable flick.)

Rogue Leader GameCube Demos Up
November 3, 2001 | 12:42 AM EST | Adam

This evening’s excursion to Target revealed a GameCube demo kiosk, complete with a demo disc with the upcoming Rogue Squadron sequel, Rogue Leader. The stage available was the assault on the first Death Star, and while what I played was easy, it was loads of fun. The targeting computer alone made for a real treat of a game, plus the controller is actually quite excellent.

If you’ve got a few minutes this weekend, give the game a shot. (Now all I gotta do is hope they’re going to have enough units at launch…)

Palm Talkers Continue to Ship
November 2, 2001 | 3:30 PM EST | Adam

Jon from New Jersey wrote in today to tell us he saw pegs of over 50 of the little super-deformed buggers in a Wal-Mart in Piscataway earlier this morning. So if you’re still wanting these guys, don’t give up just yet– they’re still coming.

Attn. Macintosh Gamers
November 2, 2001 | 3:27 PM EST | Adam

Both of you. I got an email today on a petition to get the original Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II game ported to the Mac. Were it to be released, it’d cost around $20, which isn’t too bad for the relatively old game which promises to be updated during the port process.

Since we Mac gamers get the short end of the stick– constantly– this is something I’m definitely in support of. If you want to support it too, sign the petition. The developer is fully aware of it and is very interested in porting the game… the interest just needs to be there. Tell your friends!

Download “Breathless” Trailer Monday From StarWars.com!
November 2, 2001 | 11:53 AM EST | John

Attack of the Clones Teaser Today
November 2, 2001 | 5:59 AM EST | Adam

Showing with Pixar’s Monsters Inc., the new trailer promises a brief look of the prequel sequel. StarWars.com has a feature on it here, although as of now there is no place to download it. We assume this will change relatively soon… so be sure to watch official (and other) outlets if you’re unable to see the latest Pixar flick.

(Or you can go see the new Coen Bros. flick. Good choices all around.)

Q&A Update & E.T.
November 2, 2001 | 2:25 AM EST | Adam

With Every Question For Justice, our poorly named Q&A column, has been updated with questions and answers, and even a tidbit on the murmurs surrounding Bloom County toys.

Also, the E.T. 20th Anniversary goods are showing up at Toys “R” Us, where they’re supposedly exclusives. The E.T. figures I’ve seen of the alien are quite large, not in scale with the humans, so for those wanting a SW-scale E.T. senator, looks like you’ve got to wait at least a little while longer.

Classic Star Wars Shirts Return
November 1, 2001 | 3:22 PM EST | Adam

Many of you have bemoaned the lack of classic trilogy apparel, and apparently, someone has been listening. Last night at Suncoast Motion Picture Co., I found a rack of brand new Star Wars shirts– the artwork is familliar, but these are new. Two regular shirts and a girl’s baby-tee were available, so if you need new shirts, it’s time to hit the mall.

November 1, 2001 | 11:54 AM EST | John

The news that Adam had posted below has, in fact, been confirmed by Hasbro. Earlier this week Private Universe reported that an Imperial R4-M9 would be released as part of the POTJ assortment. Now, as we’ve confirmed, it will be released instead of the R5-D4 resculpt early next year, along with Teebo and BoShek. Furthermore, it will be the final assortment from the Power Of The Jediline before Episode II merchandise and figures goes into full swing. So, there you have it, folks. This means one thing; Episode II is just around the corner!

Brand New X-Wing Model Ordering Info at HLJ
November 1, 2001 | 4:14 AM EST | Adam

Hobbylink Japan posted their preorder page for the new X-Wing kit. For about US$20, you get parts to make Red 1, Red 2, Red 3, or Red 5, multiple droid heads, boarding ladder, and scores of other moving parts and such. It looks to be a fantastic kit, and makes me wish I had any real skill as a model maker. Don’t miss seeing this one, folks, it’s evidence that a model can still be made to make a fan drool.

The kit is due for release this December.
