Not so exclusive – Q&A Correction
November 23, 2002 | 12:41 AM EST | Muse

Quick correction on Question 9 in the recent Q&A:

In the exclusive toy rundown, I mistakenly listed the 12″ Plo Koon and the Sandtrooper 4-pack as EE exclusives. My bad.

The good folks at New Force Comics dropped me a note today to inform me that they are also offering pre-orders on those items.

My apologies for any confusion.

Gunship Gun Pods Instructions
November 18, 2002 | 8:56 PM EST | Bill

At the request of a number of Yak Readers, we contacted Darth Jeff for information on how he built the gunship pods.

Here’s his instructions:

The balls (for the pods) came from hobby lobby. The troopers are removable, howeverthe will need to be modified to fit in the pods. You will have to customize your clone figures. In order to fit th cntrols into their hands, shorten the legs and reposition the feet. They are not much good out of the cockpit so it really doesnt matter that they are removable. The metal strips outside of the ball are plastic strips cut and glued into place, the gun and handles came from the goofy one that Hasbro made.

Take care when ordering the silver R2 from Amazon
November 14, 2002 | 3:26 PM EST | Ben

Many items from Hasbro are not flagged as being eligible for the free R2-D2. Most items that don’t qualify also coincidentally do not have a picture of the item on the website.

Since I have never seen the Anakin, Padme or Vader Unleashed figures locally, I placed an order and was told that my total of Hasbro merchandise wasn’t sufficient for the free R2. It appears that only Anakin ($15.99) qualified and I had to throw in an Endor Rebel Soldier ($4.99) to make my $47.97 order be over $19.99?!?

You have been warned.

Tracking your Star Wars purchases and earning “Rewards”
November 14, 2002 | 11:29 AM EST | Ben has finally gone live with the Star Wars credit card. The card is offered by MBNA and has a relatively high rate (for a Platinum Card) of 12.99%. You can choose from Yoda or Darth Vader cards depending on which side of the Force you identify with. The “rewards” program seems to be a work in progress. There might be some benefits but it seems they took a basic rewards package and tried to retrofit it to give it an amount of “Star Wars flavor.”

The Yoda image is new and fresh, not having been plastered on hundreds of other licensed products until now, but the Vader pic is tired and has been on everything from t-shirts to guitars.

Color me unimpressed so far. I’d get more use from Star Wars rewards than I do from airline miles, but if you already hold a card with MBNA at a better rate (like I do) they will not issue you the Star Wars card at the better rate.

If you are interested, you can apply or get more information here

How Do You Feel About Getting Star Wars Movies One At a Time?
November 13, 2002 | 8:38 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Larry wrote in expressing his views on the E2 DVD release:

“Some of us “true” fans are getting hurt watching the other people quivel about paying like $9.99 a movie on DVD! I have not yet even bought the Phantom Menace on DVD because:

George Lucas told us in 1999 – his plans are to package the 6 movies together in a bundle for one price after the year 2005. That price is not mentioned and I hope it is good. I hope he makes a collectors set like the Spider-man DVD came out with. I bought the Spider-man DVD collector set because that means they are dealing with us collectors.

Please mention something on your page about this for us “true” Star Wars fans and not the people who are going one movie at a time!”

How do you feel about getting the films one at a time, along with reissues and other issues? Discuss it in our forums here.

The Easter Egg Hunt Begins
November 12, 2002 | 9:18 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Chris sent in this hidden extra from the E2 DVD:

“When you go into Dex’ kitchen, highlight the small square behind him on the wall that looks like an electronic thermostat. It will reveal the college mock Star Wars ads.”

E2 Hunt Round Up
November 12, 2002 | 9:17 PM EST | Bill

We’ve gotten LOTS of reports from Yak Readers about their scores on the E2 DVD, VHS, etc. Here’s a quick rundown.

TRU: Price $9.99. A lot of people scored here, DVD– fullscreen and widescreen also VHS in good quanities in most places. Some areas were sold out by noon, others still have copies in all formats tonight.

Wal-Mart: Prices varies from $9.97 (managers who were matching TRU’s ad on their own), up to $15 or $17 bux. Quanities seem good nationwide.

Best Buy: Prices vary from $9.99 and a free calender with price matches, $9.99 without the free calendar on price matches, up to their regular price with a free calendar.

CompUSA. The sleeper which turned out to have the cheapest deal yet. $9.89!!!

Thanks for all the reports.

Discuss your E2 hunt in our forums here.

UPDATE: Clones and Bond what more could you want?

Circuit City has to have an honorable mention on the E2 sales as well, while their price of $14.99 is pretty good, it becomes great when you consider the 2 free passes to go see the new James Bond flick!

Amazon Shipping Still The Same On The Second Try
November 11, 2002 | 9:12 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Steve W. sent in this report:

“I sent you an e-mail in regards to my silver R2 from with the crushed bubble. Well I just received the replacement in the mail and the card was bent and creased every which way possible. Seems isn’t too worried about sending out mint products like they used to. Two thumbs down in my book.”
After talking with Steve, he did let me know that the box from Amazon arrived in good condition, however the contents were not good, although packed very well. Seems as though, Amazon is receiving the same boxed items that the stores are. Hasbro needs to do a better job packaging these figures. The boxes I saw at the store had them just stacked on top of each other in the case. Most in the case were crushed.

Holiday 2 Pack Reviewed
November 11, 2002 | 9:10 PM EST | Bill

This just in from Yak Reader Chris:

I just got my Holiday Edition figures. I usually don’t buy things like this off of Ebay, but my wife saw these and said that we had to have them. Then I heard that they wouldn’t be out until after the holidays maybe, so I went ahead.

Minimum articulation as you can expect. The R2 has a 2000 date so I am assuming that it is the E1 figure with antlers added. I’m not 100% sure without checking and I can’t do that right now. C3PO however has a 2002 date. The head and legs are the classic gold, very bright and shiny but the hands are not. They are a different shade, not nearly as shiny. The “would be chest” that is showing around the collar area is yet a 3rd different gold variation. UGGHH! None of the accessories on either figure are removable.

The stand is excellent. Instead of a sticker for the rug and floor it is actually textured plastic. Not too bad. It comes with the cardboard background, a greetings card with a copy of the original artwork, and a unique Jedi master point UPC with a red and green background. Also the lightsaber emblem is a candy cane

One other thing, the back states that this is “Our gift to you..” Is this a giveaway that I missed or are we supposed to pay for our presents? Just joking about that one.”

Clones IMAX Edits
November 11, 2002 | 1:26 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Joe sent in this review of the editing done on Clones for the IMAX screen:

“A review for IMAX:
While the Imax experience was simply incredible, I was quite disappointed with the “editing” of the movie. Several scenes were cut out, which suprised me. Among them were the initial introduction of Anakin & Padame, the entire library scene, the introduction of Owen & Brue Lars, among others. I don;t know if this was to increase the action vs drama in the movie, but I was expecting to see the whole movie. One VERY strong point, you can really appreciate the CG effects when they are larger than life and the lightsaber battles made the entire experience worth it.”

UPDATE: Several Yak Readers have written in to point out thatIMAX projectors have a limitation on the amount of film they can show. Somewhere around the 2 hour mark is their maximum film length.

Update For Those Who Ordered Shuttles From FAO Stores
November 11, 2002 | 1:23 PM EST | Bill

If you ordered your Imperial Shuttle from an FAO store (either by going into the store or calling one of the store’s personal shoppers), this follow-up report from Yak Reader Kbarl will interest you:

“Since the last time I’ve had gotten in contact with FAO customer service not much hope with finding my shuttle preorder. But as of today there is light to this subject.I have called the fifth avenue store and the higher up person that help since yesterday had said he done an investigation and seen that my order had gotten lost since August when the first 50 per store were issued. So he said he will put me back in the list since that time frame by filling out some paper work and have it filed. So anybody out there who had ordered this since then should contact them asap because if you don’t you may not get one at your doorstep in January.”

Full Screen Episode 1 DVD OUT NOW
November 7, 2002 | 11:17 PM EST | Steve

Seems as though many retailers have put out Episode 1 Full Screen early. Slated to be released on November 12 along with Episode 2, the full screen version is popping up across the country. If you HAVE to have it before its supposed to be out, you might want to hit a Wal-Mart or two(they seem to be hitting there the most) Or you can just wait until Tuesday for its release.

Hard To Find Star wars Not So Hard To Find
November 7, 2002 | 11:10 PM EST | Steve

I have recieved many reports that the previously Hard to Find Episode 2 items are showing up in abundance. I have seen at at least 3 local Toys R Us stores, the Wave 2 Unleashed figures, Padme Pilot Wave, Jango Pilot wave, Arena Playset, and Republic gunship. So looks like even though the port lockout slowed things down, the stores are still getting in there newer stock. Might be time for a toy run.

New Lego Pack Ins?
November 7, 2002 | 11:05 PM EST | Steve

Today at Walmart, I saw something kinda neat. They had a Lego Slave One with a black “Cargo Carry Case”. The case was basically just like a lego storage suitcase and it had the lego and star wars logos on the front of it. The price was 48.44 for the set of Slave 1 and the case.

Amazon Chromed R2s Getting Smushed
November 7, 2002 | 9:24 PM EST | Bill

We’ve gotten a number of reports about poor packing of the Silver R2s by Amazon, here’s a couple of the reports:

Yak Reader Nomad Scout writes:

“I have always been happy with Amazon. This time they may have just screwed up, but it really irks me. I ordered the Arena with the Free R2. The Arena shipped first, and I thought they were out of R2s. Then I got an email stating the R2 was now shipping, but at a cost of 9.99 PLUS shipping! It was as if I ordered them separately. Since I had found the Arena at my local TRU, and with it a mint R2, I am sending back my unopened boxes.

Not that big of a deal, since I had a legitimate complaint they could have refunded the money, but it is kind of annoying. They billed me something like $65 with shipping for stuff that cost me about $46 (with tax) at a real TRU.

Since I never opened the R2 from Amazon, I have no idea what condition it was in.”

Any from Yak Reader Spencer:

“My silver R2s also arrived smashed all to heck. What bothers me the most is that Amazon put them in a box that was too small… so there was no way to put the cardbacks in there without BENDING them to fit them in the box. I just wanted one to keep and one to open, so if my friend (who also ordered two) gets two nice ones, we’ll just swap. Otherwise, I’m sending mine back for a refund.”

After the first weekend in IMAX release, Attack of the Clones brought in a hefty 1.45 Million, placing it at 14th on the week’s top grossing films. FAO Shuttle Orders
November 4, 2002 | 8:39 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Kevin wrote in with this heads up on FAO Imperial Shuttle orders from their stores:

“I am not sure what is going on here but tonight. I had called the FAO shwartz 767 fifth avenue New york to check on the status of my order, (where I first placed my order back in August) and the computer generated answering machine keeps telling me the store is closed but it’s open 9:00 am-9:00 pm. I then called customer service at 1-800-876-7867 from the site and she told me she could not find my order. [She could] only if I placed it through the catalog. I then told her I placed it through the store when they first offered the exclusive, but she said she had no way of finding it through the store where I had placed the order and I had to call the store number
1-212-644-9400. It’s not answering for days now without answering customer service. Their maybe alot of us who placed these orders
from this store who will probably not get them but then again who knows. But the woman wanted me to place another order but I don’t need two of these. It’s better to check these now then not to get them at all. I only started to check it after post cards were sent out to people had ordered. Something is very fishy! Please forward this to anyone from the site who may very well have an answer to this.”

Yak Readers if you’ve got any news on “in store” Shuttle orders send it in.

From Yak Reader Todd:

“I ordered my shuttle through FAO in Vegas. I have not received a postcard. I called them last week and was told that my order was in there system and should ship out in Nov. Here’s hoping!”

Here’s Thomas’ intelligence report:

“Hey guys, I just got off the phone with my FAO and what I was told is that none of the stores know how many shuttles they are getting and that none have recieved any yet. There isn’t multiple ship datesbut that when they arrived they would start at the top of the list and work there way down until everyone was served. I was also told that the list we were put on in the store was faxed up to the corporate offices prior to making the orders…which in my mind would mean that the true number of shuttles wasn’t decided till after most pre-orders were put in prior to production. basically they wanted me to leave them alone and they would call me when my time came up, and that when we receive our call we have 24hrs to return the call reserving our shuttle. Another thing I found out was that regardless of whether the store offered you more than one shuttle you could only reserve one….I asked for two and when I went back a week or so later I was informed of the change of “Limit One Per A Person.’ Hope this helps anyone out there.”

Padme Pilot Correction
November 4, 2002 | 8:34 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Darth Midion pointed out what appears to be a running change on the Padme Pilot figures’ cards:

“I haven’t seen any news about something I have noticed. I have two carded Padme Amidala Pilots and on the back of the cards one has a sticker covering some of the description of her. Has anyone heard of this variation? I have only found two of the padme’s with the sticker. Any news would be helpful.”

If you’ve got any more information on this change send it in!

Silver R2 Error
November 4, 2002 | 8:32 PM EST | Bill

The silver 25th Anniversary R2 figure doesn’t know whether he is coming or going. Yak Reader Sithkiss wrote in to point out that the legs on the chromed droid are BACKWARDS. The copper tubing which supposed to be on the front of his legs is on the back instead.

Ask Yoda Collector Review
November 3, 2002 | 1:46 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Scott sent in this quick review of the new Ask Yoda:

“First of all, I love your site… it is the first thing that I check each morning. Anyway, I was just at the Target in Cary, NC (I got there early waiting for TRU to open to get my R2) and found the new Ask Yoda 12″ electronic figure. For $19.99 it is the bargain of the year. The sculpt is great and the voice is right on, unlike the new electronic Obi-Wan and Jango. So heads up for the collectors out there, the new Yoda is now coming in. Highly recommended. Again, great site. Keep up the good work.”

TRU Stocks Up For The Big Book’s Official Release Tomorrow
November 2, 2002 | 10:41 PM EST | Bill

This just in from Yak Reader Chris:

“Just thought I’d drop this note, I stopped by my local Toys R Us today in Riverside, IL, and found that the racks where filled to the limit with nothing but new figures, anakin-tatooine, padme-pilot, ki-adi, watto, clone pilot, jango pilot, lott dod, and tusken with massif. Surprisingly no darth mauls any where, nor were there any ephant mons or destroyer droids! There were also about 5 12″ scale taun taun’s with luke, and about 10 each of the geonosian battle arena and republic gunships. I also was able to get the silver anniversary R2-D2 with my $20 or more purchase. They had about 5-6 cases of the R2’s behind the consumer service desk! Keep up the good work!”

Silver R2 News
November 2, 2002 | 8:45 PM EST | Bill

How would you like to get both your Silver R2 free, and the new figures for $2.99??? Yak Reader Starwolf wrote in to say that after getting proof from Target that they are indeed selling E2 basic Saga Figures for $2.99, he went to TRU and, under their price matching policy, he got new figures (at $2.99 each), and his Silver R2 FREE.

Yak Reader Chajones sent in this hunting tip:

“OK, even if the stores wanted you to wait, now we have some leverage. I went back to my local TRU to get my R2 to open today. I got my first one earlier this week. When I scanned a Slave One, it said “Slave One 24.99 – R2D2 promotional. So if the scanners in the store are saying you get the figure, I suppose they would have to give it to you at the register, and they did. Also available was the fourth and final installment of the free Star Wars comics entitled “Machines of War”.”

The R2 Hunt Report
November 1, 2002 | 8:34 PM EST | Bill

Here’s Yak Reader Jason’s report:

“I went into TRU today to verify with my flyer if the R2 was indeed going to be available. To my surprise, I was told that an e-mail was sent out to honor people who have the preview book that I could get any of the deals including R2 today. Sure enough, they gave me one to take to the checkout. I got my ad on Tuesday, and I guess so did many others who tried to use the coupons early and TRU has given in because of this.”

And Yak Reader Darth-Dallas experience:

Just wanted to let you know that I picked up the Silver anniversary R2 at the Toys R Us in Coral Springs, Florida today. I was told by an employee that I needed to buy $100.00 worth of Star Wars items to receive it. Astonished, I asked for an assistant manager who stated it was $19.99. The only problem here was that he went on and said that I needed a coupon from the big book or whatever it’s called. I said I didn’t think that was true so he called the store manager. The manager said the $19.99 was correct and that no coupon was needed. I asked if I could get one today and she said yes. The only problem was I didn’t know what to get. I had everything there that was in stock. So I asked! I said I have a receipt from 10/24/2002 where I bought Star Wars figures from your store and I have the receipt in the car does that count? She replied, “that was fine”! She then asked a guy from the back to bring a case of the R2’s to the front. The box had 32 of them in there and she said each store received 2 of them. She opened the box and they were packed one on top of the other. I got one from the top that was “MINTY FRESH” and it made my day! Some were damaged to a degree but not too bad. My advice, get there early and ask. You never know! I did ask what would happen if you bought something to get the R2 and returned it? She said technically you couldn’t do that BUT they had to accept all returns. You get the picture. Hope this helps!”

Good luck and good hunting!
