Marmit Darth Vader?
March 31, 2003 | 6:52 AM EST | George

Yak reader Xander sent in the following link, the picture is supposedly from a Marmit Vader prototype (due on October, 2003). Xander and I have been looking for this picture for quite a while. Xander came accross with one, on the other hand. eTailers are taking pre-orders but are claiming that the Marmit Vader may not be created and released. Check out the
” Marmit Darth Vader Prototype here» ”. We are eager to see the Vader but, it is really hard to tell if this image is from a true proto from Marmit. There is no scale reference on the picture, i.e. coin or other known object thus it could be a 4”, 6” and up. But, meanwhile it is listed on the page as Marmit Vader Proto.

Action Figure Collector’s Guide… Part 4
March 28, 2003 | 11:13 AM EST | Jair

Figure’s Name: Chewbacca

Released: 1978

Type of Cardbacks: SW 12 Back, SW 21 Back, ESB, ROTJ (two different pics), POTF.

Estimated Price: SW 12 Back=$315.00, SW 21 Back=$225.00, ESB=$105.00, ROTJ=$47.00, POTF=$123.00, LOOSE=$14.00

You can view the the figure by clicking HERE. It’s the one on the right.

One variation that is worth mentioning is that in the Early Bird Kit, Chewbacca came with a green crossbow. The loose figure with that crossbow is much more valuable ($55.00 aprox.) than a regular loose Chewie.

The Luke Skywalker figure had a similar variation that I didn’t mention. On the Early Bird Kit it came with a double telescoping lightsaber. The little tip of the weapon extended about a half an inch more, making it as long as the character’s leg. Because the production of these was so expensive, the design was changed to the regular lightsabers most of us know. Still, a few carded Skywalkers had the double telescoping saber. These are very expensive($3,000.00 plus!)… if you can find one.

Sorry I could not post this yesterday. Later today expect figure number 4… Chewbacca.

Master Replicas Obi-wan Lightsaber SOLD OUT
March 27, 2003 | 11:03 AM EST | Jason

If you are like me and you were under the assumption that you
would have the choice of either the “Clean” or “Weathered”
version of Obi-wan’s Lightsaber from ANH, then you were probably
shocked to learn that when you went to order the clean version
as a Society Member, the Clean version was limited to 500. Not
only that, but it had sold out very quickly.

I sent a message to Customer Service to tell them how outraged I was
about the fact that their notification letter mentioned nothing about
the exclusiveness or quantities surrounding this lightsaber. Their
response was “the quantities were posted on the website prior to the
release”, but I signed up for the news letter to be aware of things
like this instead of visiting the site daily for updates.

If anyone for some odd reason ordered two and has an extra, please let me know. If you are as outraged as I am, send an e-mail to customer service and let them know how you feel.

Vintage Ebay Item of the Day
March 27, 2003 | 9:38 AM EST | Mark B

Today we have a great example of how something as popular as Star Wars can be used to sell just about any toy. Anyone who grew up in the 70’s knew that to be really cool, you had to have a van. And not just any van, a van painted with some wild scene on it. Kenner realized this an released 2 different Star Wars vans in their SSP line of vehicles – one with heroes, one with villians. SSP was simple, you stuck a plastic stick with notches into the vehicle and when you pulled it out, the notches pulled through a gear that started a big rubber wheel spinning which of course would power the vehicle across the floor. I personally had the demolition derby cars which would break apart when they hit each other. Our Ebay Vintage item of the day is a great example of the Hero SSP Racer Van.

How to keep your carded collection…
March 26, 2003 | 6:29 PM EST | Jair

This is the way I keep my carded collection. If you want to have it like this, you’ll need a room with nothing on the walls.

I bought several perforated boards of plywood and pegs so I could display my carded figures in a way that every figure could be seen, like in a store. I nailed to the back of the plywood boards rails of wood about a half an inch thick, which I drill to the wall to hold the board and weight of the figures. You need that half an inch so that you can get the pegs in and out of the board. If you drill the board directly to the wall, you won’t be able to insert the pegs.

It’s as simple as that. Each board costs about $10 (here in Guatemala, I imagine that in the US these are about $5 or $8). The pegs I use are for a single item, not the ones that can hold many figures. These cost about $0.20 cents each. I imagine you can buy everything at your local Home Depot or Hardware Store.

You’ll only need to clean your figures once in a while, beacuse they’ll be exposed to dust. And don’t forget… DON’T EXPOSE YOUR COLLECTION TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT!!!

Here is a pic of how these boards look like with figures. That’s Me and my Girlfriend at last year’s Star Wars Convention here in Guatemala. The figures in the back are part of my collection, and you can see how cool these boards look like with figures on them. It’s also very easy to keep track of your collection with these babies.

Here is the collection.

I hope this helps people out, and if you need help or have questions just let me know. I’ll be more than glad to help!

Reference Books…
March 26, 2003 | 5:26 PM EST | Jair

As a collector, one needs to know three things: What’s out there, how much it costs, and last but not least, where to get it. There are three books that are very helpful with the first two matters at hand.

1) Star Wars, The Action Figure Archive, by Steve Sansweet
2) Star Wars Super Collector’s Wish Book, by Geoffrey T. Carlton
3) Collector’s Guide 2001, by Harald Niedermeyer

These babies serve as great reference for collectors. Steve’s and Harald’s books concentrate purely on Kenner/Hasbro stuff, while Geoffrey’s book has almost every item ever created with a Star Wars logo or name. All three are different, but all three are great and very useful. If you can get your hands on any of these you’ll know what I’m talking about.

As to where to find the items listed on these books… Anywhere from your local Supermarket or Comic Book Store (for the new stuff) to Flea Markets, Conventions, Specialty Stores, or the Internet for the items released a long time ago… in a galaxy… you get the picture.

Before the Guide, let’s see how it all began…
March 25, 2003 | 1:57 PM EST | Jair

The first ever toys from the Star Wars Universe came almost 9 months after A New Hope was released. To some fans back in 1977 it was like waiting for a newborn (at least it took the same time). The first four figures came in an “Early Bird Certificate Package” Christmas 1977. Well, actually no figures came in the package, just instructions on how to mail a certificate to get them between February 1 and June 1, 1978. The package also came with a stand and backdrop to put the first 12 figures.

The four figures that everyone got via mail were: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and R2-D2. From that moment on, the craze for collecting Star Wars action figures was on…

The price for an early bird gift certificate and for the 4 mail away figures is not cheap, if you can find someone who’s willing to sell it. Probably you can get it between $400 and $800 depending on the condition and if it’s still sealed. Sure many may have paid more or less for theirs. I’ll try to get a pic of one and post it soon. I really wanted to let collectors know a little about this piece, since it was the start of one of the most successful toy lines ever created.

Later today I’ll post the first Action Figure of the Collector’s Guide… Luke Skywalker. At first I will only post figures that were (and are) available on regular cardbacks, but every now and then I’ll post mail away and other difficult (and almost impossible) figures to get.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!!!…
…AND THE POCKETBOOK ALSO IF YOU ARE A “HAVE IT ALL” COLLECTOR!!!!

Action Figure Collector’s Guide…
March 24, 2003 | 4:10 PM EST | Jair

Starting tomorrow, a brand new daily post will be featured on the website about action figures. In it, you’ll be informed in detail about each figure released since 1978. Some of the information you can expect is this:

What year was the figure released? How many cardbacks was it released on? What is the estimated value of the figure? Etc. Some figures have soooooooo maaaaaaany variations that I’ll not get in to that, just different cardbacks. For pics of the figures you can check out our Toy Archives section.

Hope you enjoy this new post, and if you want something more included on it let me know before tomorrow.

Thanks!

Jair

New info on Clone Trooper Bust
March 24, 2003 | 11:29 AM EST | Mark B

Some new info has just been delivered by Bothan spies about the upcoming Clonetrooper bust from Gentle Giant. As is widely known, there will be 3 variations of the troopers and each will come with various arms and weapons. We have just learned of the case breakdown on these – there will be 3 White Clone Troopers, 2 Yellow Accented, and only 1 Red Accented. So, looks like the Red one will be the really hard one to get – you variation hunters be on the lookout around the end of July when this is released!

Vintage Ebay item of the Day
March 23, 2003 | 11:35 AM EST | Mark B

Lili Ledy 12″ Tusken Raider. This is one of the rarest 12″ figures ever made in the Star Wars line. Originally only available in Mexico and made in very small production runs. The Tusken Raider was unique due to the fact that a 12″ Tusken was not made in the original Kenner 12″ Figure line. There are only a handful of these still in existance, which makes them almost impossible to find.

Vintage Ebay Toy of the Day!
March 22, 2003 | 12:24 PM EST | Mark B

Power of the Force Luke in Stormtrooper Outfit. This was one of the last figures released in the original Kenner Star Wars line. The figure itself is generally hard enough to find in good/complete condition. Here we have an excellent example of someone who never learned how to PLAY with their toys! Something unique about this item is that the card is unpunched. Vintage action figures had a small cardboard section that popped out of the top of the card so that retailers could hang them on hooks. The original owner of this item was lucky enough to grab it before someone could put it onto a display.

Finally….
March 21, 2003 | 5:07 PM EST | Jair

At last, here is the pic of the CD shelves our friend Chuck uses to keep his collection at home…

Update from Mark:
These exact shelves are available from a place called IKEA, they have are on the web at IKEA.com, however, they are not cheap and I am not sure they are available anymore. I have two of these myself. They are excellent for displaying the Action Fleet Ships.

There are similar shelves that are cheaper than this ones. If you go out to look for these, try to get them with a “clear” or “see through” top, that way the shelves will not be too dark.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING…

Never expose your figures, carded or loose, to direct sunlight. The UV rays will make the colors fade on boxes, figures, cardbacks, etc.

Protect your investment.

Take care…

Jair

Do you want the original cuts of the Trilogy on DVD?
March 21, 2003 | 4:50 PM EST | Jair

I don’t know how many of you know this, but Mr. Lucas doesn’t plan to have the original cuts of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi on the future release of the Original Trilogy on DVD.

There is a website called www.originaltrilogy.com that is gathering signatures to present a formal request to Mr. Lucas to include these cuts on the DVD’s, not just the Special Editions. If you want to have “The Originals” when the DVD’s hit the stores sometime in the future use this link to sign the petition.

Vintage Ebay Item of the Day
March 21, 2003 | 9:36 AM EST | Mark B

I’m going to be writing a new daily column here, featuring a Rare Vintage Item that is being offered on Ebay. While we don’t normally run posts for Ebay items (and we don’t support scalpers!), these will all be unique VINTAGE items that most people won’t ever see outside of Ebay. With that in mind, I give you our first item up for bid on the Price is Right – whoops, I gotta change the TV channel when I’m writing this stuff….

Vintage Jawa Sandcrawler with Remote. This vehicle was one of the most expensive in the Kenner line back in 1979 at about $30, so it was one of the worst selling. Most kids wanted a little more action like an X-Wing or TIE Fighter. These turn up from time to time on Ebay, but it is tough to find them complete with box and Remote Control. Remember your batteries! You’ll need a couple of “D” and a couple of 9-volt.

Mystery 4-Pack????
March 21, 2003 | 7:34 AM EST | Mark

Has the markings, at $19.99, of a builder pack. But what is it? Here is the description “Star Wars Figure 4-Pack”. Anyones guess! It will be released on May 25th, so it says.

SPECIAL UPDATE!! – This just in from a very nice Hasbro Employee who would like to share the knowledge.
“This is a collection of four 3 3/4″ scale Imperial characters from the Death Star. Includes Tripod Cannon with projectile, energy Hose and trunk. Darth Vader’s lightsaber, Imperial blaster, rifle interrogation droid, gun rack, mouse droid, 4 figure stands. Also, I’m 99% sure that the 2nd wave of cantina figures have been indefinitely delayed if not altogether cancelled but will most likely be re-packed (especially KITIK KEED’ LAK) at a future date. About 15 of these were produced for samples before being cancelled by WalMart.”

Who shot first? Han or Greedo?

Please Take A Moment…
March 19, 2003 | 8:14 PM EST | Mark

‘Americans ought to be prepared for loss of life.’ is a quote from our president. Whether or not you agree we should be going to war with Iraq, the US will undoubtedly enter war with Iraq over the next couple of days. Please take a moment and pray for the American Soldiers that will be overseas defending our country during this war. Their lives hang in the balance while we spend our time looking for toys and reading toy news. So take a moment before you head down to the rest of the news.

How to keep a mixed collection.. thanks to Bob M.
March 18, 2003 | 5:02 PM EST | Jair

There is no doubt that if you want to keep items carded or in their package, space will always play a big factor. If your collection is a mix of carded and loose figures, ships, and playsets you have variuos options. Bob Martinazzi has an TV/Star Wars room that I liked a lot. I don’t know if the shelf was custom made or if he used one he had, but the figures, loose and carded look great in it.

Follow the link below to se how Bob takes car of his figures, specially his Luke Skywalkers! He has tons of them.

http://w3.mivlmd.cablespeed.com/~gizmo91/

Congratulations Bob on a great collection.

PS:If you can’t use the link, copy paste it to your browser.

The Mirror Star Wars Universe
March 17, 2003 | 9:09 PM EST | Bill

The Trade Federation has posted a feature which takes us back to 1993– a time when there were no Star Wars figures in production. The field was thrown open for bids from toy companies. We all know Kenner (now Hasbro won), but what would our collections have looked like, if say, Playmates won??? Well click here and check it out!

How to keep a loose collection… Thanks to Chuck.
March 17, 2003 | 5:32 PM EST | Jair

I liked a lot many of the ideas sent on how to keep a loose collection. As in keeping a carded collection, the budget available to invest will determine at the end what you do. When I started collecting seriously back in early 1996, I took everything out of the package, but then I didn’t know what to do with the figures. Sure you can store them, but do you what to?

First, I used a big shelf with many spaces where all of the figures could fit, but three problems surfaced… First, everytime someone touched or kicked the shelf, since it was not mounted on the wall, at least half of the figures would fall (at the time, the REAL action figure stands didn’t exsist). Finding the weapons took a lot of time. Second, people who entered my room always wanted to touch the figures, and started twisting the limbs of the figures until they became loose. Third, if you do not clean your figures at least once or twice a month, they will grow beards (also known as get covered in dust).

Taking all that in mind, for a LOOSE collection to be well kept, you have to keep your figures in a mounted, dust resistant, restricted access place; but still be able to enjoy them.

Chuck sent us his idea. He uses CD shelves to display his loose figures. They look great inside those shelves and are very well protected. One other important thing is that they don’t take up a lot of space. You can easily fit 2 or three of these in a wall, and each holds a lot of figures. He bought these for about $80.00 each, but I’ve seen much cheaper ones that look just as good.

Thanks Chuck for helping out your fellow Star Wars Collectors. The picture of your collection will be posted tomorrow with the other two best ideas.

How to keep your collection… Winners!!!
March 17, 2003 | 4:06 PM EST | Jair

I wanted to post this in the morning but I was involved in a car crash last Saturday and it took me all morning today to find the parts for my car and bill the husband of the lady who decided to run the red light. Well, at least nobody got hurt.

Hello Star Wars fans and collectors. I want to thank everyone who took the time to send in their ideas on how to keep your figures at home. I’m sure that a lot of collectors will benefit from your contributions.

The best ideas have been picked and will be posted in a couple of minutes. Keep checking the website and see if your collection (or part of it) makes it.

Thanks again to all for participating. This was just the first of many features we’ll decicate purely to the hobby of collecting… Enjoy!

Help a fellow collector…and maybe your collection too…
March 14, 2003 | 6:46 PM EST | Jay

James is in a tough spot…
I am a long time viewer of this page, and a big fan of your site. I am in a financial bind and have to sell off a huge amount of my Star Wars toy collection. I am selling them in ‘themed’ sets based on the movie such as “Federation Army”, “Tatooine”, “Hoth Battle” etc.
Would you be willing to post this along with my email address so that collectors out there can grab some of my collection to build their armies, catch up on those hard to find missed figures or just to add to their customizing collection, I’d really appreciate it. Once emailed I will send them a list of the ‘sets’ and the prices too. Thanks.
James can be reached here if you can help him out.

More on Kotobukiya Kits:
March 13, 2003 | 2:21 PM EST | George

Several readers sent over e-mails asking HOW-TO. Well, seems like Kotobukiya is producing SWs snap-together kits. However, if glue is required, my good old pal Dan over at HOBBY ZONE in Eagan MN, strongly recommended over a phone conversation Ambroid Cement # 1611 ($1.89). Have in mind that these aren’t typical model kits but highly detailed statues. ”Another alternative is Super Glue” Dan added.

Clone Trooper Commander Kit coming soon! Check them all here.

March 12, 2003 | 11:25 PM EST | Jay

Chris wrote in with some great finds…
I found the new speeder bike sets in my local Target (Roanoke, VA). I also found the newest Action Fleet ships today at Wal-Mart including Slave One.
Also Target is getting ready to do a light reset in their boys action aisle within the next week, including Star Wars. My local Target just sent the remaining 12″ figs to the clearance endcaps. Looks like they’re not part of the plan for spring. $13.98 and going down from there, they had Dooku, Zam and SBD left. Remember different size stores have different strategies and more space to work with so this may not affect the one in you’re town, but worth look.
Thanks again to Chris for the update.

Gotta Love Hasbro
March 12, 2003 | 5:45 PM EST | Mark

In just another shameful attempt to grab more money from the die hard collectors. Hasbro has decided to make the new Hoth Han Solo in two different versions. One with a BLUE coat and one with a BROWN coat. The blue coat will be available first, with the brown one following shortly thereafter. You can read all about it right HERE at the official Star Wars website.

Also, the Saga TIE Bomber showed up in the clearance aisle of my local Wal-Mart for $16 and some change. It came up at regular price at the register, and the next day they were back with the other regular-priced items.

A question to our readers from Brian Satchfield
March 12, 2003 | 7:31 AM EST | George

” I just read your report about the Lego TIE Fighters showing up in the mail. I got mine a couple of weeks ago, but it didn’t come in a box as your article states–mine came in a small, promotional-looking plastic bag packaged in a padded mailer envelope. The product number on the front of the bag is 3219 and the item number on the back of the bag near the UPC is 4191793. It will be interesting to see which version is the more common or why some
people get one over the other.”

Any help will be appreciated, e-mail Brian Satchfield here and or share it with our readers here.

UPDATE: Mine came in a small cardboard box that looked like it had the heck of a journey. Oh well, no parts were missing.

New Cantina Question
March 11, 2003 | 9:56 PM EST | Jay

SJ wrote me asking about a date for the 2nd wave of the cantina sets. Although I don’t have a specific date, it looks like they were not part of the most recent Wal-Mart toy reset. So I’d say they still a good few months away. Interesting timing of this question as I have just returned from my local WM where I picked up Wave 1 at the low low price of $2.50 each. It looks like they were cleared out of the Star Wars aisle to make room for other action figures. Good time to be scouring the clearance aisles if you still need these! Great question. Keep em coming!

Episode III Set Revealed!!!
March 11, 2003 | 6:11 PM EST | Joseph

The article hints about the fact of classic sets appearing in the final SW movie, so we would certainly think so. So exactly what is it? Believe it or not, we know exactly already. Here’s the scoop, courtesy of TFN reader Steve Bragg.

A bit on Kotobukiya’s kit…
March 11, 2003 | 5:39 PM EST | George

After my post about the Clone Trooper from Kotobukiya @Entertainmentearth.com I’ve got several e-mails asking how to. Well, Vynil and Poly models are totally different substracts (materials) to work with. Glue paint and craftmahship are different from the beggining. Have your exacto knife, boiling pot (Yoda’s) and e-mail those questions. I’ll be glad to make your modeling, airbrushing and scorching a pleasure.

Don’t forget to send in those ideas…
March 11, 2003 | 10:13 AM EST | Jair

Just a reminder to send in those ideas on how to keep your collection at home. Some of the ones I’ve gotten are great! The best will be posted on Friday.

Take care,

Watch those mailboxes!
March 11, 2003 | 9:14 AM EST | Mark B

If you ordered one of the free Mini-Lego Tie Fighters a while back, keep an eye on your mailbox. Mine showed up in the mail yesterday. It comes in a really cool little box with photos of the other mini Star Wars Legos with Yoda watching over them. Most people I have heard from are reporting that their boxes are beat up from handling in the mail. Mine wasn’t too bad, except for some corner dings which I would totally expect.

How to keep your collection…
March 10, 2003 | 1:11 PM EST | Jair

It hasn’t been a week since I started here and by now I have been contacted by people all over! Spain, Argentina, and Germany just to name a few. Thanks to everyone!

I want to share with everyone ways to keep your Star Wars Collections. There are a lot of ways…

Some like to keep everything stored in boxes, others like to display their collection to themselves and others. Some like to have things carded and boxed while others like to have everything outside its package. Some like to build dioramas and others just like to see the figures and ships standing there.

Sometimes your budget determines how you keep your collection, and with that in mind I want you to share how you keep yours to give other collectors ideas on how to keep theirs. If you have pics also send them, but just one per collection please, or my e-mail will explode!

Ok, send in those ideas and I’ll post three of them. One for carded figures, one for opened figures, and one that has both. The result will be posted on Friday.

If yours doesn’t make it now don´t worry, I’ll try to post as many ideas as possible, at least one or two per week. This because nobody has the final word on how to do this so every idea could be a good one.

I’ll also be posting my collection soon…

Thanks!

Jair

The Nightclub/Zam In The Alley {Dialogues Deletions}
March 10, 2003 | 11:51 AM EST | George

From Star Warz.com
” Before Anakin and Obi-Wan enter the Coruscant nightclub in pursuit of Zam Wesell, Obi-Wan gives Anakin a little speech about losing his lightsaber. For some reason, one line of Obi-Wan’s was deleted. It’s still present in one of the film’s trailers…

A Look Into The Past & A Glimpse Into The Future
March 10, 2003 | 5:42 AM EST | Robert

For a long while I’ve been planning on revamping the prototypes section. In addition, I have also envisioned the modern era collector sites working together since the common ground we all share is Star Wars collecting. With both TheJawa.com and Rebelscum.com working together with Yakface.com I would like to start the prototype website joint effort off with a preview of the new entry page design layout by showing four new prototype entries. I designed the new entry pages similar to how each of the Star Wars films start, with scrolling yellow text on a space background. I’m interested in feedback to the new design, so please feel free to drop me a line at SemsFir@aol.com letting me know whether you like the new layout or don’t like it. You can view the four preview entries by going HERE.

It’s a big cockroach! 12″ Geonosian review
March 2, 2003 | 5:39 PM EST | Michael

When an ugly, green bug is the best looking figure of a set, the other two members better take a close look in the mirror. The sixth scale Geonosian Warrior is at just about every Toys R Us, but we have the review with photos right here.
