Fan’s Choice Figure Poll #6 Update
February 24, 2004 | 8:48 PM EST | Bill

It seems Hasbro has heard that fans weren’t overjoyed with the original choices for fan’s choice poll 6, they have added a figure that many fans will be happy to see as an option– the Imperial Scanning Trooper from the Milennium Falcon figure case from very early in the POTF2 line which many fans still need in their collections. Click here for the revised poll.

Master Replicas Pricing News
February 24, 2004 | 4:50 PM EST | Keri

This latest news regarding Master Replicas and their wish to install a new discount pricing policy was sent in by YakReader Tom:

“Well, I just got an E-Mail from someone I am dealing with on Ebay for Master Replicas items. It seems as though MR is trying to put a stop to discount selling of their items by merchants who have deals to purchase and sell MR merchandise. Here is an excerpt from the letter:

Master Replicas has informed all authorized retailers that they are doing a price demand on it’s retailers. In other words if Authorized Retailers want to continue selling master replicas products we will no longer be able to advertise large discounts on line.

I’ve read a lot of things that are not so complimetary about MR recently, and I think this can probably be added to the list. Honestly, although I think this is bad news and very unfortunate, I can’t say I’m surprised. I’ve got a lot of MR items in my collection, but I’ve yet to buy from them directly. Now my concern is that the prices are really going to go up from MR. If the items can no longer be sold at a discount, what’s really to stop them (aside from common sense). Let’s hope common sense prevails.”

Indeed, it is also my hope common sense will prevail. I personally have bought everyone of my MR items from the secondary market, through a third party source, namely Amazon.com or KBtoys.com at a marked down price. Hopefully, MR will not take away the ability to buy their props at discounted, more reasonable prices through other retailers. We will continue to follow this story with great interest.

Newest Wave of Unleashed at Toymaniacs.com
February 24, 2004 | 11:54 AM EST | Jason

Currently in stock, Chewbacca, Clontrooper, and Luke X-wing
for $15.99 at toymaniacs.com

I also wanted to comment on Hasbro’s newest poll, it BLOWS.
You can pretty much get any of the figures on the poll off of
Ebay for Retail/on-line prices still. Ephant mon which everyone
has been asking for is for some reason unavailable.

I hope with the absence of a lot of new product at Toy Fair,
and lame repacks lately, that this does not mean 2004 will be
a disappointing year. Come on Hasbro, you can do better than
this.

Bounty Hunting Today: Vintage ESB Carded Figures
February 23, 2004 | 9:55 PM EST | Keri

Following up the last edition of Bounty Hunting, today I have chosen some of the most famous and endearing characters that were brought to us by the greatest film ( in My opinion ) of the entire 5 Star Wars films.

ESB provided not only a shocking revelation about the Skywalker family, but introduced our much beloved Jedi Master Yoda and of course the Bounty Hunters, including the baddest of all Boba Fett. The Kenner figures were also exceptional, capturing the likenesses of all the new creatures very well at that time.

Like the auctions before, these are all non-graded figures, yet are still entirely presentable and make a super eye-catching display. These auctions feature figures that are somewhat affordable, and reasonably priced especially when compared to the AFA graded figures inflated prices on today’s market. As with the other carded figures before, the backs and fronts changed with different offers and more characters added. Later cards displayed a Revenge of the Jedi sticker promoting the new secret Admiral Ackbar figure. While these are not rare, they do make an interesting addition to a carded collection. Click on through to the links below to start or add to your carded ESB collection today!

Fan’s Choice Poll For Fall Reissue
February 23, 2004 | 8:18 PM EST | Bill

The latest fan’s choice poll is up at Hasbro, and while many would like to have seen a poll with a choice among figures that didn’t make it on previous polls, this one asks fans to choose a previously released figure for recarding. The contenders are R2 with holographic Leia; Admiral Motti; Ree-Yees; Death Star Trooper; Han Solo in Stormtrooper Disguise (from 2001 Trash Compactor Scene Pack).

Bounty Hunting Today: Vintage 12 Back Carded Figures
February 20, 2004 | 5:56 PM EST | Keri

I am intrigued to say the least with the “retro” packaging and styling that Hasbro will be offering collectors in the upcoming year to coincide with the release of the Original Trilogy Version 1.3 on DVD this fall. This led me to where it all started back in 1978 with Kenner and the Original 12 Back Carded action figures.

I’m not going to rehash ancient history regarding the Kenner figures or go into the different variations of the 12 backs themselves, as there are various websites and books with enough information to fill a room. However, I will feature some reasonably priced auctions for some carded 12 back figures for you to view today. If you are looking for a somewhat affordable way to add one of these carded figures to your collection then the auctions spotlighted today will help you to do just that!

The auctions I have chosen are for non-graded figures that are not in mint condition, yet are still very presentable for display purposes. Vintage carded figures really are gaining even more popularity, therefore the prices have continued to soar, especially for AFA Graded figures which fetch prices in the outer stratosphere. The 12 back auctions below are the original companions to the new figures unveiled at Toy Fair this week.

Vintage 12 Back Luke Skywalker

Vintage 12 Back Han Solo

Vintage 12 Back Leia Organa

Falcon Favorite Follow-Up
February 20, 2004 | 12:44 PM EST | Keri

If you remember the Falcon Favorite from a few weeks ago sent in by YakReader Jordan of his styrofoam stump from ROTJ’s Ewok Forest found in a dumpster, Jordan sent in a picture of it for everyone to enjoy. This is a really cool prop item and the stuffed Kenner Wicket on top is a nice touch!

Bounty Hunting Today: Custom Simpsons Homer Fett
February 19, 2004 | 5:38 PM EST | Keri

I personally enjoy looking at one of a kind custom creations made by some very talented fans, and from time to time there is always one creation which leaps out at me, which is the auction featured today.

The Simpsons has a large fan following, with many episodes that have connections to Star Wars – such as the familiar phrase “You bent my Wookie!” So it is no surprise that Simpsons fans began making their favorite characters like Homer, Bart, Lisa, and Marge to resemble Star Wars characters.

Today’s example is a nicely detailed, painted and sculpted Homer as Boba Fett, or Homer Fett if you like, complete with Duff Beer Can accessory. The quality and workmanship is very nice on this particular custom, and if you are a huge Boba Fett fan, no collection would be complete without this great custom Homer Fett with firing rocket pack!

Sent in from Yak Reader Tom:

“Just got the new Insider, in the ToyBox article they mention a cool feature; The Captain Antilles head can be lifted (stretched) as if he was being choked by Vader. Cool feature!

Also mentioned was the next wave of unleashed that we have read about.. Bossk, Tusken Raider, and A Secura”

Thanks Tom.

Falcon Favorite!
February 18, 2004 | 8:55 PM EST | Keri

As we all enjoy the latest pictures and news rolling in from Toy Fair in New York, picking and choosing what we will eagerly await and purchase, such as the Gentle Giant Armory mini helmet collection, providing a continuation of the short Riddell line. Thanks to YakReader Philip from Seattle, WA this week’s Falcon Favorite is a C-3PO Riddell mini helmet with a surprising twist!

“My Favorite piece in my entire collection is my autographed Riddell
Mini C-3PO Head, mostly because it’s not autographed by Anthony Daniels.
It was a gift from a friend who was working at a radio station in
Chicago when the original trilogy was re-released in the mid-90s. Peter Mayhew came into the station to talk about the films and he brought a big box of Star Wars swag to hand out. My friend grabbed the C-3PO head and asked Peter Mayhew to sign it. Mayhew reminded him that he played Chewbacca but my friend, not a Star Wars fanatic, said it didn’t matter.
And it doesn’t, at least not to me. In fact, I like it even more
because it has Mayhew’s signature. It even makes sense in an Empire Strikes Back context . . . sort of . . . maybe.”

Of course it makes sense, and it makes it a truly special and unique item that I am always looking to feature here every week. If you would like to see your item in an upcoming Falcon Favorite, shoot an email in my direction here.

Bounty Hunting Today: From Star Wars to Jedi VHS
February 16, 2004 | 8:38 PM EST | Keri

Continuing on the theme of “making of” documentaries on VHS, I will follow up with the 1989 release of “From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga.”

This behind the scenes spectacular gives fans a glimpse into the making of all 3 films in the holy trilogy. While more of a whirlwind with no particular focus, there is plenty of eye candy to go around with vintage interviews and the inner workings of Jabba the Hutt ( puppet style, no cgi here ) including how the movement in his tail is performed. While this VHS is not particularly rare, it provides some nice footage of the original trilogy versions 1.0 as we remember it so well. Click on through below to add another reasonably priced Star Wars item to your movie collection today!

Possible Yavin Wave Variations?
February 16, 2004 | 1:14 PM EST | Keri

YakReader JediSeely writes in with some speculations regarding the possiblilties of some variations in the newest wave of figures from A New Hope:

“Just to let you know, I picked up the new Yavin wave yesterday in Fremont, NE (about 20 miles west of Omaha) and I found 2 possible errors on Hasbro’s part.

1.Captain Antilles – on the side, Hasbro proves why their quality control never won the National Spelling Bee. They spelled helmet as helment

2.General Dodonna – it does NOT list a blaster as an accessory.

Also, the Yavin wave, as well as the previous ROTJ wave (holo Luke, Rappertunie, J’Quille, Tanus Spijek, and Lando Sail Barge) have been showing up at several locations in the past week.”

Keep your eyes peeled for any corrections and/or mispellings on your next figure run!

Bounty Hunting Today: Making of Star Wars VHS
February 13, 2004 | 5:59 PM EST | Keri

Nothing says love more than cozying up to that special someone and popping in a not often seen copy of The Making of Star Wars hosted by C-3PO and R2-D2!

Originally aired on TV back in ’77 shortly after A New Hope was released in theaters this Making of Special allowed fans to see an inside view of the film as told by our two favorite droids. Today, the special is great fun and allows us to see all of the actors and even George Lucas himself, young and baffled by the film’s huge success. One major treat near the end of the special is seeing 3PO, R2 and Vader immortalizing their “footprints” in cement in the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theater as the iron-on t-shirt and button wearing fans cheer from the sidelines!

This particular VHS was a mailaway item offered through Corn Pops around the time of the Special Edition and is a liscened copy, not a bootleg. Click on the auction below to add this reasonably priced VHS to your movie collection today!

Luke Jedi Variation
February 13, 2004 | 5:42 PM EST | Keri

YakReader moonbase7 sends in this photo and information of his recent findings regarding the newest incarnation of Luke in his Jedi outfit:

“this luke was found awhile back with hood down ds#33501(rare)
as most of the figures have the hood up ds#33181 that i have seen.
also found the yavin wave yesterday at wal-mart in CA.”

Last Chance Medal and Anakin Signature!
February 13, 2004 | 5:11 PM EST | Mark B

Master Replicas has added both the Anakin Skywalker Signature Edition Lightsaber and the Medal of Yavin to their “Last Call” list. This means that less than 10% of the total run of these items are left for sale (less than 150 of the Medal of Yavin and 75 of the Signature Lightsaber). In fact, the Anakin was actually listed as “Sold Out” a few days ago, and has since been put back up for order, more than likely there are just a few of these left. Get them ordered from Master Replicas before they are gone!

The Original Trilogy. That Is The New Package!
February 13, 2004 | 9:02 AM EST | Mark

Check all this out at the Official Hasbro Site

As most of you know by now, earlier this week Lucasfilm Ltd. announced that they will be releasing the original three Star Wars movies (Episodes IV-VI: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) on DVD in September. In celebration of this significant event, Hasbro has created the Original Trilogy Collection product line (OTC for short). This collection will be unveiled for the first time at the American International TOY FAIR in New York.

Plus there are a lot more images, including an all new set:
3 ¾” Vintage Figures – These figures will be ultra-modern sculpts with incredible articulation and decoration of twelve core characters from the classic trilogy, with four representing each movie. The vintage aspect is that they will be placed in reproductions of the card fronts from the original packaging of the 70’s or 80’s. That means they will have the same “coffin” blister and even the Kenner logo! For those that want to keep the product in the package, the figures will come with a Star Wars embossed outer clamshell.

Skywalker Ranch Featured in Architectural Digest
February 12, 2004 | 9:21 PM EST | Keri

Loyal Yakreader K Knight reports in with this interesting find in the popular magazine Architectural Digest:

“I’m sure someone out there will be interested in this. Architectural
Digest has an article on George Lucas and Skywalker Ranch. There are
several interior pictures including one that prominently displays some
original maquettes of the “chessboard” aliens that Chewbacca and R2-D2 are playing with in A New Hope. (It’s on p.132) There are a few other Star Wars items visible as well.”

Target Pricing Pt. 3
February 12, 2004 | 9:17 PM EST | Keri

Following up on the continuing story regarding Target pricing of Basic Figures comes this report from YakReader Vader4Life:

“So, I have seen all the reports of Target bumping their prices of the basic lines from $4.99 to $5.99. The Target in Framingham, MA had tags for $4.99 but they were ringing up at $5.99.
Well, went there this morning and they had the first Jabba’s Wave there, and scanned the barcode to see if they had more out back (not like they would go get them, but that is a another story )
Well they scan now for $4.99 and I checked every figure, for ’03 and ’04 and they all scan now for $4.99
Maybe Target realized their mistake and corrected, since Walmart is $4.77 and TRU is $4.99.”

I took a trip to my local Target here in North Texas at lunchtime today and saw that the tags were still $4.99 and all the figures they had rang up the same price. There were no Jabba’s Palace wave, only a few Ach-Med’s, Imperial Dignataries and R-3PO on the pegs. Perhaps the price will remain at $4.99, but only time will tell.

New Bounty Hunter from Gentle Giant
February 12, 2004 | 9:58 AM EST | Mark B

Given the fact that I mainly collect the Bounty Hunters from the Star Wars series, I’m pretty excited about this one! Gentle Giant will be unveiling at Toy Fair this year their new Bust featuring one of the most popular Bounty Hunters from The Empire Strikes Back – Bossk! This will be a great one to go along with Zam Wessel, Boba Fett, Jango Fett, and Greedo (Greedo has just arrived in their warehouses and will be shipping to retailers this month). Look for Gentle Giant to announce several other mini-busts (and hopefully the Star Wars statue line!) at Toy Fair in NY this weekend.

Falcon Favorite
February 11, 2004 | 5:17 PM EST | Keri

This week’s Falcon Favorite sent in by YakReader rosemaster is not only a great looking vehicle, but one made of Legos including a story that can be appreciated by everyone:

“The Star Wars item that means the most to me is this Lego version of Tantive IV, which my wife put together. I remember back in 1977 we didn’t know what to expect when we went to see the new Star Wars movie. The first thing to hit the screen was the Tantive IV, closely followed by the Imperial ship. That scene just blew me away and I was hooked from then on. Every time I see this model it takes me back to that magic day when I first became a Star Wars fan.”

Ahh, Great memories and an even greater way to recall them with an awesome representation of Leia’s Corellian Corvette. If you would like to share your favorite item, along with the story behind it, send it in here to be spotlighted in this weekly feature.

Star Destroyer Wave Carded
February 10, 2004 | 11:01 PM EST | Bill

We’ve updated the 2004 Product Guide with carded images of the Star Destroyer wave for your viewing pleasure. These are currently up on Ebay fromOverlord.

We have also updated the product guide with the latest items hitting stores to help with your toy hunt. Interestingly, we are within 2 waves of the figures (the Star Destroyer wave and Endor wave) which Hasbro has announced so far, but have yet to hit retail. With that in mind, it should be interesting to see how much Toy Fair reveals!

Isn’t it GREAT… they love us!
February 10, 2004 | 8:04 PM EST | Ben

Jim Ward (Lucasfilm Director of Marketing), according to an article in the New York Post in reference to the special edition DVDs:

“We realize there’s a lot of debate out there, but this is not a democracy. We love our fans, but this is about art and filmmaking. (George) has decided that the sole version he wants available is this one.

Personal commentary: This IS a democracy (democratic republic to be precise) and the copyright protections that protect his “art” exist at the pleasure of “We the People.” Given Napster and other recent challenges to the archaic system of copyright perhaps this is yet another reason things should change.

Target Pricing Increases and More
February 10, 2004 | 5:22 PM EST | Keri

Many emails have poured in from readers regarding the latest price increase that has been seen at Targets all over the US from coast to coast. According to latest reports, its not only Target that has begun raising prices as YakReader Sean also points out that
“a Meijer here in Loveland, OH (Cincinnati) also has raised their prices to $5.99.”

YakReader Damian V sheds some light on the Target price increase disparities:

“The recent price increase has to do with old stock (Hoth Han (Brown
Coat), SnowTrooper, Boba Fett POC, Anakin Skywalker (Secret Cememony),Luke & Vader arriving to stores with an old sku (ending in
326) from last year that was discontinued (since it was tied to ALL
Collection 2 based figures ) to a new sku (1014) with the higher price.

The current toy department sku ending in 758 has the $4.99 price tags
for the R3p0, Bar2-D2, Hoth Luke & Hoth Trooper, R1-G4.”

These are interesting developments, and certainly not the first time we have seen a price increase for the basic figures.

The boxes on display, while just mock-ups, tell us that the release will be focusing on the Classic Trilogy.”

Toy Clearance at Fred Meyer
February 6, 2004 | 12:51 PM EST | Mark B

I was in my local Fred Meyer store this morning buying groceries and decided to wander through the toy aisles, when I discovered they were having sales of 50% off the lowest clearance prices. I found the pegs full of Star Wars figures for only $2 after the 50% off (mainly army builders and older figures), but the best clearance was over in the Lego aisle. Nearly all of the Star Wars (and some Harry Potter) sets were on clearance. I hooked myself up with a brand new AT-TE from Attack of the Clones for under $30.00

Jedi Master Points Auctions – Part 2
February 6, 2004 | 10:43 AM EST | Jason

People amaze me these days. When you can justify the Jedi Master Points Auction on the fact that you had a successful auction win, then the auction as a whole was a good thing is an over-simplification of the auction Hasbro designed. The auction as a whole was a FAILURE. The biggest reason was ACCOUNTABILITY. How many people bid on items, only to be outbid by someone who probably did not have the points they said they had? You either moved on and settled for an item that was your second choice or gave up entirely because of no ACCOUNTABILITY. Accountability leads to fairness.

With that being said, I think Hasbro could have avoided this problem if they had gone through with the idea they tossed around back at San Diego Con 2003 of a council or committee of fan collectors of Star Wars to work with them. I guess corporations will never open their eyes and see there are people outside of their companies that know their products passionately, probably more so than some Harvard Business Analyst that came up with this adept Auction Idea. You can use these people to your advantage and the best part is, most will volunteer ideas for FREE. It does not take a scholar to realize that times are changing, the market is changing, and businesses need to rise above old business models and forge new frontiers.

New Hasbro Survey and New ROTJ Jabba
February 5, 2004 | 9:35 PM EST | Jason

Today I received a new Hasbro Survey. Most of the questions revolved around the Jedi Points Auctions, the worst redemption program EVER! They did ask at one point however to rank the #1 and #2 programs they could offer in the future. Among the choices I would consider worthy were Exclusives and a Rewards Program. The other options really offer no one any value. They even had the audacity to include the option “Auctions where I can bid points I earn by purchasing STAR WARS figures and accessories”.

On another note, picked up the new Jabba. On comparison between him and Jabba Glob, it appears to be the same mold with slight modifications… mostly to the head, making his eyes bigger and mouth larger for the obvious tongue affect. I like him, but I think he could have been better if they started from scratch. I’ll take him for now.

Even More New Figures Found!
February 5, 2004 | 4:47 PM EST | Keri

YakReader moonbase7 reports in with 2 great finds at his local Wal-Mart in California:

“I found the Hall of Fame wave,a newly carded stormtrooper plus eleven more re-issued figures and this morning both new deluxe sets jabba and pipe and the new beast set w/ new monk figure which where $9.96 each.”

Looks like all sorts of new items are hitting stores with some regularity in certain areas. I must say that my luck in finding new items has been much better than average, so perhaps it is time for a figure run everybody!

Falcon Favorite
February 4, 2004 | 5:25 PM EST | Keri

Today’s Falcon Favorite comes from YakReader Dave with a wonderful photo of his item and story:

I have been blessed to have my own cargo hold of cool “STAR WARS” stuff that I have accumulated since the summer of ’77. There have been many incredible items over the years- the Kenner/Hasbro line, Icons and Masters Replicas lightsabers, the Attakus Darth Vader, and of course, Kelloggs “C-3PO’s” cereal. My sentimental favorite might have to be the very first “STAR WARS” collectible I ever bought–and it was a measley fifty cents! It was the “STAR WARS” movie program that I purchased at the legendary Glenwood Theater in Overland Park, Kansas in May 1977. The Glenwood was showing “STAR WARS” in glorious 70mm Dolby Stereo and I had never seen anything like it. I was twelve at the time, and couldn’t resist taking home a souvenir of the greatest movie I had ever seen (or would ever see).
It was full of cool photos and the amazing Tom Jung cover artwork. It’s still one of my most prized collectibles–and my oldest.

Thank you to everyone who has written in to keep this feature a permananent fixture. I will add a new Falcon Favorite every week on Wednesdays so please stay tuned for next week’s addition! Email me here to see your item featured next!

More New Figures Found!
February 3, 2004 | 12:53 PM EST | Keri

This newest store report comes from YakReader Bob O’Fett :

“Found the new Rappertunie/ J’Quille/ Lando Sail Barge wave today in Sacramento, CA at Target. Also found were the new deluxe Jabba/ Bo’Marr figures as well.”

In a stroke of luck, I myself was able to pick up the New Luke Jedi, R2 Sail Barge, Rappertunie, J’Quille and Lando Skiff (no deluxe Jabba) at a heavily scalped Wal-Mart here in North Texas this morning. I also just picked up the 12″ Lando Skiff Doll recently after months of searching. (yes my area is that far behind on 12″ waves)

I realize not everyone is seeing these newest figures, and with some areas it is hit and miss, with miss being the norm. The only advice I can give is try to remain positive and patient and do not give into frustration and rumors. Good Luck and Happy Hunting everyone!
