Mini Review – Jedi Temple Assault Battle Pack
August 31, 2005 | 8:44 PM EST | Scott

Yours truly was fortunate enough to score the recently released “Jedi Temple Assault” Battle Pack yesterday and I thought I’d drop a quick 2 cents on it.

It goes without saying that anything Clone related is a pretty easy sell these days, so for fans and army builders, this set is a no-brainer. You get three of the blue deco Jedi killing Clones, also known as the 501st legion, Anakin Skywalker (listed as “Darth Vader” on the box, a re-release of Anakin #2) and the Clone Pilot.

If you picked up the carded Anakin, there’s no surprises here. Same figure sans the extra hand with the red-bladed saber.

The Clone Pilot (at least on mine) seems to lack the quality control shown on the carded version. the hands and arms at the elbows, pop off with little to no effort. I may have simply gotten a bad one, but I’ve noticed this to be similar in other multi-packs containing rehashes.

But most of you are most likely going to set them aside for the real reason to pick up this set. MORE CLONES! Based on the #6 “Quick Draw Action&sculpt, this Clone is repainted with the colors of the 501st Legion that stormed the Jedi Temple. The sculpt is first rate, however the paint ops are just a tad dodgy and jagged, as if hastily applied. There were two sets on the shelf at the Kmart where I found them, and I found the paint job to be the same quality on both. I expect the upcoming solo carded version to have sharper, cleaner lines.

It should also be noted that the shoulder bell on the left arm is glued in place and not removable as it is on the carded version.

One nice surprise addition I found was a small baggie of extra weapons taped to the bottom of the box insert. If you’re an opener, keep you’re eyes peeled as this could be easy to overlook.

So if you’re lucky enough to spot one, grab it, swap out the Episode III Evolutions Anakin for the one in this set, and you have the beginings of a mini Jedi Massacre diorama. At around $5 a figure, this Battle Pack is a better value than most of others released so far or yet to come. (Attack on Coruscant notwithstanding)

Mysterious Display of the Force
August 25, 2005 | 4:40 PM EST | Keri

Longtime YakReader Moonbase7 writes in and shares not only his story, but a great picture of his latest find.

“First there was another one of these display’s that made it out to the video area of our local Wal-Mart on 4/2/05 for one day, then it was in stored in the back room. I was told i might be able to get it, but the employees fought over it then as a act of blasphemy some employee hit it with a fork lift! They had to dipose of it in the trash. I hear the news and go on to score many more in my travels since March of 2005. Fast forward to 8/05 a full four months since the toys where let out to the public, I was told there was another…and it was in the box unused and forgotten behind stored swing sets and other misc stuff. This morning it came to be full-filled. I was escorted out of the garden dept with one of the rarest displays to come in years, still in the box with directions and unused.”

Patience and perserverance can sometimes pay off to the most devoted collectors out there in the form of really cool items. While this story isn’t typical, there are nice employees out there willing to give courteous collectors cool items like this.

Target Exclusive Tie Fighter Sighted
August 25, 2005 | 8:08 AM EST | Bill

Thanks to everyone who wrote in to let us know they’ve scored the Target Exclusive Tie Fighters. This one isn’t your old reissue of the vintage molds tie fighter. After we saw the OTC tie fighter finally get a nice sculpting of the TIE engines on the back of the cockpit pod, this one sports wings which are much closer to scale than any of the ties we’ve seen released in the 3 3/4″ figure line before– unfortunately the increased wing size comes with an increased price– 40 bux. Good Hunting!

After reading your story on this book I checked Amazon. They also have it available for preorder but at $94.50 (with FREE shipping too). That’s a little more manageable than $150. Needless to say I preordered it at Amazon.

Thanks for the scoop, great way to save $60.00!

UPDATE 2: This is from reader Michael…
Even better, Walmart.com has it for preorder for $87.00!!!
Lesson here: don’t pay over $90 for it! Thanks!

Final C3 Patch Auction Ends
August 13, 2005 | 9:36 AM EST | Scott

Our servers were down for a couple days due to some minor overhauling. During that time, the fifth and final Ebay auction ended for the Celebration 3 patch benefitting the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. The auction brought in an additional $76, for a grand total of $338 to benefit the UMDF’s research efforts.

The patch for the fifth auction was donated by your friends right here at Yakface and the whole effort was headed by the DC Area Star Wars Collecting Club.

Big thanks to everyone who bid and helped make these auctions a success!

Falling Early Bird Prices
August 9, 2005 | 10:43 PM EST | Bill

We’ve gotten more reports of Early Bird sets on clearance at ridiculously low prices:

Yak Reader Lester wrote in I found these a few months ago at the Wal-mart store in Mt. Pleasant, SC for $2.00. I bought about 12 of them at the time, but they’re all gone now. I still have about half left and plan on giving them to friends of mine. The other half I’ve already sent off for the figures. Happy hunting!

And Yak Reader Mike sent in this report I got the Early Bird kit from Wal-Mart in Dunn, North Carolina for 3 dollars last night…. They had 4 left on the clearance isle when I left. Hope someone else can get this great deal.

And Yak Reader Linda scored 2 early bird sets for $4.99 a piece at her Virginia Wal-Mart.

Early Bird Gets The Worm, Patient Bird Gets Cheap Mail In Figures
August 8, 2005 | 8:45 PM EST | Bill

Yak Reader Tony sent in this report:

“On trip to Wal-Mart Sunday, found the early bird set marked down to $10. this was at the university pkwy store in winston-salem, nc. they had loads of them. i thought it was said there would be no markdowns on this item by hasbro?”

It looks like some Wal-Mart Managers are exercising a little initiative. If you find Early Birds in your area cheap let us know.

UPDATE Wal-Mart Finds In CA
August 8, 2005 | 12:40 PM EST | Scott

Wal-Mart appears to be as hot as the weather in California right now as Yak regular, Tony Wan Kenobi checks in with his latest batch of finds…

“Just wanted to drop a line that Wal-Mart again is the place to get the latest figures. My wife was on the hunt again this weekend and she found the very hard to find Mustufar Sentry. There was only 2 in the whole batch of new figures. She was there when Wal-Mart first opened. She was there early to beat the 100 + degree weather we have been having. She saw #54 At-Rt driver only 3. #50 there was only 1. no clone pilots new paint deco. She asked someone in the toy department if thats all they had and the employee said yes they had only gotten a few cases and they were all put out. There were only a few of the repaints. As for 45-47 who Im trying to help friends get them can not be found anywhere. Are they that hard to find? Is that wave a rare one? it seems like it.

Tony Wan Kenobi
California”

To address Tony’s question above, the Clone Trooper #6 (Shock Trooper) repaint as well as the Clone Comander and Pilot repaints, will reportedly be packed heavier than usual in upcoming cases. They may not be short-packed, but they are hot right now and they haven’t been shipping very long. Rest assured though, with patience and dilligence, you WILL find what you’re looking for. Stay off Ebay, avoid the scalpers!

UPDATE Brian from Chico, CA writes in with his report…

“After reading Tony Wan Kenobi’s report I felt I should let you know I also found one case with #56 Saturday evening at Chico Wal-mart. It had…

2 #56 Mustafar Sentry
2 #55 Obi-Wan Kenobi
2 #54 AT-RT Driver (White Highlights)
1 #50 Anakin Skywalker (Not So Scary)
1 #49 Commander Bacara
1 #48 R2-D2 (Bubble version 2)
1 #44 Destroyer Droid
1 #43 Wookiee Warrior (Brown)
1 #42 Neomodian Warrior

Case # 85173000J
SW E3 C1 Basic Figure Asst W6R1 ’05

I picked up both #56 – one for me, one for one of my friends.
The next morning I ran into my two other friends and they said they each got one at Wal-mart as well, so they must have put out one more case after midnight… Anyway, all four of us are very happy.

Brian M.
Chico, CA”

New Poll – Evolutions
August 7, 2005 | 7:14 PM EST | Scott

I’ve become an instant fan of the new “Evolutions” line. I think it’s an idea that’s long overdue, and the figures and accessories included in each set are outstanding. Unfortunately Hasbro has said they don’t have any immediate plans to continue the line beyond the Sith set. (Never say never!)

If they do plan to go on with “Evolutions”, which of the following sets would you most like to see made…

Luke – Since we have so many Tatooine Lukes, I’m thinking maybe start with a definitive X-Wing Pilot Luke to Bespin Luke (no action feature) on up to the Ultimate Jedi Luke (a really good Throne Room Duel version finally?)

C-3P0 – Episode I, Episode II and his classic golden finish.

Padme – There’s about a dozen outfits yet to be made that could be included in this set, take your pick.

Obi-Wan – Padawan, Knight, Tatooine Exile (A truly definitive version of any of these has yet to be made IMO)

Granted there’s dozens of other possibilities for more Evolutions sets, but these spring immediately to mind. What do you think? Vote today!

Titanium Wave 3 & Gift Set Found
August 6, 2005 | 2:26 PM EST | Scott

Yak reader JediJones chimes in again with yet another find, this time the new Titanium Vehicles…

“Hi, guys, I hadn’t heard of Titanium Series Wave 3 being found yet, so I thought I’d send you a picture. I found the new wave as well as the first Titanium gift set at Wal-Mart in Hazleton, PA on Thursday. There were a ton of gift sets on the shelf for $19.97 and 2 side endcap shelf hangers labeled Titanium Series hanging up at the end of the Star Wars aisle with Titanium Wave 3 for $4.97.

No older vehicles were packed with the new ones and the ROTS vehicles
were weighted slighter heavier in the assortment than the other movie
vehicles. This is a smart move since all the classic trilogy vehicles
from the last Titanium wave are still pegwarming at this store while all the
ROTS ones are sold out. That’s one reason I don’t think Hasbro should
be planning to release only 10-15% ROTS figures in the Saga assortments
next year. ROTS is where the majority of consumer interest is right now and
I doubt it will fade away that fast right after the DVD is released.

JediJones signing out… ”

Holo Leia Update
August 2, 2005 | 5:57 PM EST | Keri

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who wrote in with their experiences regarding ordering the Holo Leia from shop.starwars.com. Most seem to have had positive experiences with the occasional crunched packaging arriving to some people.

Here are the reports I have recieved:

Jimbo writes in with this:
“I just saw on the site that poor individual received his holo leia all crushed protecto pak included, I received mine this morning and all is fine, my protecto pak was a little damaged but the figure is fine. Maybe the fedex guy doesnt like him that much!! I have bought a number of stuff from Starwarsshop.com and everything has arrived safe and sound, there not the bes packers either a piece of paper scrunched up and the figure maybe some bubble wrap or something. thanks keep up the good work!!!!”

Chad adds:
“This is in response to the post about the Holo Leia. Mine came in great shape. Both the figure’s packaging and the protecive case it came in great condition. Just wanted to pass it on.”

Chris also had a positive experience:
“This is Chris from Crystal Lake, IL(an hour and a half north of Chicago). I was just sending a report over that I got my Holo Leia this past saturday 07-30-05 and I had placed my order on 07-18-05 for the MINT with protective case. I got the best packed item ever. Very nice case. I dont have any pics online yet but its sweet. Also I picked up #51-53 from a good source at a local Target store.”

Hamlet really got lucky:
“Interestingly enough…I receive my 2 Holo Leias today as well. I was too late in ordering the mint ones so I expected some abused
packing…but to my surprise I got 2 absolutely mint Leia’s in a brown box. No damage of any sort and it only cost me 11 bucks each.”

Brendan however did not recieve mint items:
“A few days ago, i too recieved the holo Leias i ordered. When it arrive, i was somewhat disapointed to find that the 4 Holo
Leia’s i ordered -altough not as crushed as the the one posted on your website- was indeed not mint. All four cards had curled or warped lower edges. One was even creased, And i paid $14 for each. Just thought i’d share my first experience with starwarsshop.com.”

As I have said before from personal experiences, I have not really had a condition problem with packages arriving from shop.starwars.com. I am very curious to see how well packaged the MR Star Corps Helmet will arrive considering that the shipping was almost double that of MR’s shipping charges on their own website.

Star War Episode III – The Backstroke Of The West ?!?
August 2, 2005 | 3:13 PM EST | Scott

Want a good chuckle? Then check out This Blog someone posted which gives a detailed description of the VERY POORLY translated Chinese subtitles on a bootlegged version of ROTS.

PARENTAL WARNING In a couple of instances, some of the words are actually translated to a few F-Bombs, so use care when letting your kids click on through.

Thanks to Larry J. for the heads-up on this.

We’re All Going to be a Lot Thinner!
August 2, 2005 | 1:08 PM EST | Keri

YakReader Clark writes in with this report of his Holo Leia that appears to have been crushed in Garbage Masher 3263827!

“Well I received my Holo Leia today. The box was completely crushed! I opened it up and the figure and case are crushed beyond belief. Plus the Holo Leia does not have guns. I have seen pics where she is supposed to have guns. I have e-mailed starwarsshop.com and I am waiting for them to explain this matter. They had better replace it. They totally botched this job. I am really steaming! Here are some pics. I ordered the very first day it was avaliable and was told it would be mint.”

As for the “missing guns”, Hasbro decided at the last minute to change the figure to have no guns as it didn’t look right. Hopefully Clark will be able to get some sort of satisfaction through shop.starwars.com. The only mashed items I have recieved have been through Hasbro.com, but then again I bought those items to open, which was a good thing!

Custom Galactic Heroes
August 2, 2005 | 12:49 PM EST | Keri

It has been quite awhile since I have featured any interesting or unusual Ebay auctions for many reasons, the first and foremost being lack of time to surf the world’s biggest online garage sale known as Ebay. However, I return today with a very cool and dare I say it – cute – custom Galactic Heroes Clone Trooper.

As many of you YakReaders know, I myself dabble in making custom creations, and like many customizers I have found myself on a Clone Trooper “kick” repainting and creating my own Grand Army of the First Galactic Empire. Today’s spotlighted auction offers a small Galactic Hero incarnation of Commander Cody as seen on Utapau, complete with his specific visor. The sculpting work and paint application are nicely done and this will fit in perfectly with the other Clones in the line.

Click on the link below to add this little custom Cody to your own Galactic Hero army of Clones.
