Coming out two months earlier than planned, it jumped to .5 past lightspeed and swapped places with Matthew Stover’s Shadows of Mindor, and arrived at your local bookstore. This week we focus on the release of this new book with a spoiler-free (as possible) review of the book, and an interview with the author where we discuss the finer points of Millennium Flacon as well as his cancelled Darth Plageous novel.

Also this week we have a store report and discuss the latest Republic Gunship going for insane amounts on eBay, and the showing of new battle packs, Wave 4 Legacy figures, and more showing up in stores near you.

Kotobukiya: R2-D2 Kiriko Glasses Now Available at AFX
October 28, 2008 | 8:49 AM EST | Jayson

Just in from Kotobukiya:

We would like to let KOTOCLUB members know that a LIMITED QUANTITY of Star Wars Celebration Exclusive R2-D2 Kiriko Glasses are now available from ACTION FIGURE XPRESS.

Combining ancient Japanese craftsmanship with the Star Wars universe, Kotobukiya produces one of the most unique Star Wars exclusives previously found at Star Wars Celebration IV in Los Angeles – Kiriko Glassware. Kiriko is a traditional Japanese glass etching technique to make subtle alterations to everyday glass tableware. As Kiriko developed during the Meiji era (mid-19th century), the craft went through many revisions, such as utilizing new equipment introduced from the west, while still retaining the time-honored Japanese techniques utilized until this day.

Kotobukiya has taken the Kiriko technique and blasted it to Tatooine, with the release of the R2-D2 KIRIKO GLASS. The 10oz whisky style glass (approximately 3.75 inches tall) is hand etched at different levels, taking the pattern of R2-D2’s droid body and transforming it into a work of art. You can easily feel the deep engravings when holding the two-toned frosted texture glass in your hands.

Never before available in stores, you can now purchase the item for $49.99 at Action Figure Xpress.

October 18, 2008 | 3:00 PM EST | Justin2

An Idealistic Crusade is a midquel to a fan-fiction sequel trilogy photonovel series by forumite Darth Depressis. Similar to a highly popular science fiction trading card series (released in 1962), the entire story will be presented across 100 two-sided digital trading cards.

Each “card” front and back are numbered, similar to trading cards – you never get them in numerical order when you buy a pack… which is the concept for the presentation of this series.

The format is pretty cool, and very unique. Check it out HERE.

Episode 164: Obsessed with Star Wars
October 13, 2008 | 10:32 PM EST | Jayson

For weeks Marjorie has been quizzing Arnie on Star Wars trivia taken from the book Obsessed with Star Wars by Ben Harper. This week, Arnie turns the tables by asking some questions to the author himself, and finds out more about the making of this fun and unique Star Wars book, and listen to find out how you can win a copy of this book.

Also this week, we look at another Star Wars book, Order 66 by Karen Traviss–the first hardcover installment in the Republic Commando series based on the beloved games, and we look back on another vintage figure from The Empire Strikes Back.

And it seems you cannot read the news or open a bank statement without being reminded of the current economic downturn which has been spreading globally this past week. We sit down and look at what this means for collectors. With a global tightening of the belt, will exclusives be easier to find, or harder? What will happen to the value of your collection? It’s all discussed on this week’s Star Wars Action News.

Toyguide Update: The Clone Wars: Clone Trooper 501st Legion
October 9, 2008 | 10:12 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates conclude today with the addition of the Wal-Mart Exclusive 501st Legion Clone Trooper. Pretty much anything with the “501st” designation is a sure fire way to get collectors into the stores. Thankfully, Wal-Mart didn’t take advantage of that fact as this figure is the same price point as their other “basic figure” assortments. The figure itself is a repaint/repack of the standard Clone Trooper but has the blue accent/flashes of the 501st Legion. Although this group is lead by Captain Rex, the blue hues of Rex and these 501st trooper figures don’t match so they don’t look like a cohesive unit. As mentioned, this is a Wal-mart Exclusive but instead of including a simple clamshell like another retailer, this figure features a Republic Army Identification Card that collectors can sign and add their photo to through Wal-Mart’s Photo Center.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is an item worthy of adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: The Clone Wars: Commander Fox
October 9, 2008 | 9:42 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with a series of additions to the ever-expanding The Clone Wars Collection. Next up, the Target Exclusive Commander Fox. Recently featured in The Clone Wars movie, Commander Fox is the leader of a detachment of Coruscant clone troopers assigned to protect Padme during her confrontation with Ziro the Hutt. The figure itself is kit-bashed repaint of the Captain Rex figure with a repainted helmet/head accessory from the Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi and features the emblem of the Galactic Senate prominently displayed on his chest. This figure was available as a Target Exclusive for the initial price of $12.99, but in some areas managed to find its way to the clearance aisle for a fraction of that “premium” price tag.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is an item worthy of adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: The Clone Wars: #12 Super Battle Droid
October 9, 2008 | 9:38 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with a series of additions to the ever-expanding The Clone Wars Collection. Next up, the Super Battle Droid. Arguably one of the best figures in terms of translation from screen to plastic, the bulky Super Battle Droid features modest articulation in the upper body and arms, but lacks knee and ankle joints. The SBD also features firing missile launchers that can be attached to the arms for more firepower.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is an item worthy of adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: The Clone Wars: #11 Clone Pilot Odd Ball
October 9, 2008 | 9:26 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with a series of additions to the ever-expanding The Clone Wars Collection. Next up, Clone Pilot Odd Ball. A no-brainer on Hasbro’s part here, a simple head swap and presto – new figure! Odd Ball is a kit bash creation of the standard “grunt” Clone Trooper without weathering/battle damage. Odd Ball also includes the Clone Trooper’s weapon accessories as well, but these do not have the silver weathering finish applied to them.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is an item worthy of adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: The Clone Wars: #10 Clone Commander Cody
October 9, 2008 | 8:56 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with a series of additions to the ever-expanding The Clone Wars Collection. Next up, Clone Commander Cody. Collectors didn’t have to wait too long to get one of their favorite clones in the Clone Wars line and he doesn’t disappoint. Cody features superior articulation with ball-jointed shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and ankles. His deco is a precursor to his EIII design, but I’d have liked him to have received a weathered treatment similar toCaptain Rex. Commander Cody features a unique head sculpt complete with battle scars, removable helmet, blaster, blaster rifle with rocket firing attachment and 2 rockets.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is an item worthy of adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: The Clone Wars: #09 Ahsoka Tano
October 9, 2008 | 8:29 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates return today with a series of additions to the ever-expanding The Clone Wars Collection. First up, Anakin’s “snippy” new Padawan, Ahsoka Tano. Like most of the animated Clone Wars figures, Ahsoka is an all-new sculpt that hold true to her dainty physique in the cartoon. She features the standard fair of articulation points most of which are ball-joints but does only have swivel elbow/forearm joints. Ahsoka’s accessories include her now signature design lighsaber, Republic-issue backpack* and little Rotta the Huttlet (aka “Stinky”). Surprisingly, Hasbro felt the need to articulate “Stinky” as well giving him little swivel arms.

*While the backpack works well for Ahsoka, I think it would have potentially added more play value if the straps were longer so other figures like Anakin or Clones could utilize it as well.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is an item worthy of adding to your collection.

Episode 163: I Can’t See A Thing In This Mask!
October 7, 2008 | 8:40 PM EST | Jayson

Judging by the decorations in the department stores, the items stocked in the “Current Events” section of the stores, and the greeting cards placed in highly visible loations, CHRISTMAS is just around the corner! However, before Christmas we have to survive yet another All Hallows Eve, Certain to come to our door begging for candy are ghouls, ghosts, Ghost Riders, and Hulks. But hopefully there will be a few Sith Lords, Jedi Knights, Clones, and other beings from a galaxy Far Far Away as well.

This week on Star Wars Action News we do our annual Halloween costume round-up. Whether you are trying to find the perfect costume for your child or for yourself at a more grown-up oriented event, we tell you what we think of the retail offerings in stores and at StarWarsShop.com

We Say Brainiac, Hasbro Says Pons Limbic
October 7, 2008 | 12:05 PM EST | Jayson

Walmart’s webstore has been busy adding placeholder pages for several upcoming Legacy and Clone Wars products but most interesting is the fact that the artist, err cantina patron, formerly known as “Brainiac” or “Brainee” will now be known as Pons Limbic. Looks like the Hasbro team cracked open their anatomy books and named him after a couple brain-related terms. Wow, we get to collect andlearn!

Toyguide Update: TLC Comic Pack #5: Antares Draco & Ganner Krieg
October 7, 2008 | 8:37 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with a series of Comic Pack additions to the ever-expanding Legacy Collection. Next up, we are treated to 2 all-new figures: Imperial Knights Antares Draco & Ganner Krieg from Legacy #6.

Toyguide Update: TLC Comic Pack #4: Darth Talon & Cade Skywalker
October 7, 2008 | 8:22 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with a series of Comic Pack additions to the ever-expanding Legacy Collection. Next up, we are treated to 2 all-new figures: Darth Talon & Cade Skywalker from Legacy #2. The scantily clad Darth Talon has gone to the “Darth Maul School of Cosmetology” as she’s decked out in red and black full body tattoos. A great looking figure overall but Talon is severely hampered by the lack of elbow joints. Cade Skywalker suffers from no such oversight as he is fully articulated and, depending on the version* you purchase, fully accessorized with blaster, lightsaber and lightsaber hilt.

*Note the packaging for this set has a printing error on the front of the card that designates it as Comic Pack #2, while the card back and bubble insert states the correct number in the series as “#4”. Also, some versions of this comic pack do not include Cade’s lightsaber or hilt accessories. so choose wisely.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is a set you think is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: TLC Comic Pack #1: Asajj Ventress & Tol Skorr
October 7, 2008 | 7:47 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates return today with a series of Comic Pack additions to the ever-expanding Legacy Collection. First up: Asajj Ventress & Tol Skorr from Republic #69. Asajj is a decent upgrade of the 2003 Ventress figure with new paint job, soft goods skirt and belt but sadly no attention was given to the previous mold’s lack of leg articulation. And strangely, she include the detachable lightsaber blades from Count Dooku’s lightsabers. Tol Skorr is an all-new figure, chock full of articulation. About the only detriment Skorr has is that the one hand is pre-posed in “the claw” position that hampers its usefulness for anything but scratching your back.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is a set you think is worth adding to your collection.
