Price Hikes Part 2
January 30, 2009 | 9:31 AM EST | Jayson

It’s no secret economic times are tough and if you thought the Wal-Mart’s $7.49 and Target’s $7.99 pricepoints were bad, one of my local Minnesota Target stores is starting to charge $8.79! And with our sales tax, that amounts to an astronomical $9.40 for a single basic figure!

Sound off in the forums with your thoughts here.

Toyguide Update: TLC No. 32 Spacetrooper
January 30, 2009 | 3:07 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the Spacetrooper from the Legacy Collection’s A New Hope wave.

A long time fan request finally gets its day. The Spacetrooper makes a brief (and tiny) appearance in A New Hope as the Millennium Falcon is drawn into the Death Star by its powerful tractor beam. Spacetroopers feature specialized gear that allows for working in the vacuum of space, complete with rocket pack and BMF blaster. The photographic source that serves as the basis for this figure was printed in the large Star Wars Chronicles book and can be seen in our forums here.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: TLC No. 31 Han Solo (Stormtrooper Disguise)
January 30, 2009 | 2:35 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of Han Solo (in Stormtrooper Disguise)from the Legacy Collection’s A New Hope wave.

*See post below for summary, as these figure share the same body*

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Edit: On second look, the Han appears to be taller than the Luke in Stormtrooper Disguise, but the difference is negligible.

Toyguide Update: TLC No. 30 Luke Skywalker (Stormtrooper Disguise)
January 30, 2009 | 2:22 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates today with the addition of Luke Skywalker (in Stormtrooper Disguise)from the Legacy Collection’s A New Hope wave.

Here we’re treated (again) to our hero, this time donning the gear of a freshly killed stormtrooper in order to rescue Leia from the detention area of the Death Star. Although we had just received comic pack versions of the figure in TAC line, this one is different in that it as an “updated” holster to better hold the blaster. Aside from it being a little longer it doesn’t really improve the esthetics when utilized. Also different from the previous release is that the grenade/canister on the belt is removable*. Overall not a lot new here but it is in non-comic deco and, if you leave his bucket on here’s another opportunity to bolster your Stormtrooper ranks.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

*Note: the belt that is on Luke is different from the Han Solo figure in this wave in how the grenade/canister attaches to the belt. Luke’s belt has 2 posts to plug into the canister, while Han’s belt has a slot to receive a tab on the canister. Also, they each have unique helmet sculpts.

Price Hikes Continue?
January 30, 2009 | 12:20 AM EST | Justin2

If you thought the new $7.49 price at Wal-Mart was getting too steep for your Star Wars figures, it appears that Target has raised their basic figure prices even higher.

$7.99 seems to be Target’s new price point as figures are scanning this high in the St. Louis area, and reports of this increase are starting to come in from other regions as well.

It’s Not a Two-Pack
January 27, 2009 | 10:43 PM EST | Jayson

Looks like or hopes have been officially dashed upon the rocks as carded imagery has surfaced at Jedi Insider showing the Ugnaught packed out as a single figure. That means we can look for a running change of this figure appearing alongside the Hoth Rebel Soldier variant this spring.

Toyguide Update: TLC No. 34 Obi-Wan Kenobi
January 27, 2009 | 12:40 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates tonight with the addition of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Legacy Collection’s A New Hope wave of figures.

After over a decade of sub-par modern era figure releases, Ol’ Ben Kenobi finally gets the full super-articulated treatment. This figure features ball joint shoulders, elbows, knees and ankles with swivel wrists, hips and waist. He also flaunts some of the standard soft goods flare with a removable cloth Jedi robe that is far more esthetically pleasing than the VOTC version. As for the accessories, not only does he include his signature lightsaber, but you’ll also find the small table (complete with sculpted tea pot and cups) from his Tatooine hovel and a holographic projection Princesss Leia figure that attaches to it.

If there is any one issue with this figure it would be how the neck and head joints are designed. To get the most mileage from this mold, the torso, neck and head are actually three separate pieces. As you’ll see in the photos, the neck piece has a ball on either end that plugs into sockets on the torso and the base of the head. The result, on my figure at least, is a very wobbly head/neck joint where Ol’ Ben looks as if he’s dozing off half the time due to the loose joints. Maybe these tolerances will tighten later in production but for now you might have to do some jury-rigging to make it look right.

Head to the toyguide to see if this latest version of the strange old hermit is worth adding to your collection.

Episode 179: Rogue Leaders
January 26, 2009 | 8:24 PM EST | Jayson

On this week’s Star Wars Action News, we talk to Rob Smith, editor of the Official Playstation Magazine and author of Rogue Leaders: The History of LucasArts about videogames past, present, and future as we look at his new book, covering such classics as Star Wars: X-Wing and Rebel Assault, to the current The Force Unleashed. Rob gives us his prognosis on the future of the embattled Battlefront 3 game, and answers the age-old questions: is PC gaming dead? And, what is more important in a game–story or gameplay.

Also this week, we discuss the new Ashoka Tano lightsaber replica going on pre-order from eFX Collectibles on February 1st, and preview the Gentle Giant Han Solo in Carbonite and Boba Fett animated maquette.

All this and lenticular Valentines too on this episode of Star Wars Action News.

Episode 178: Star Wars Economics
January 20, 2009 | 4:25 PM EST | Jayson

While we’re still a month away from the toy reveal explosion that is Toy Fair it seems like it’s been a high-energy week for Star Wars. From Battlefront 3 leaked alpha footage to new DVDs, Hasbro toys, Acme art, Gentle Giant maquettes, and Art Asylum figures, not a day has passed over the last week where there didn’t seem to be some major news for Star Wars collectors.

On this week’s Star Wars Action News, Marjorie and Arnie do a news round-up, summarizing the most important news of the week, and opining on the revelations.

Also this week, Kevin looks at one of the safest investments you can make in this economy–vintage figures. Think we’re kidding? Listen to find out. And I promise you, it’s not as boring as your economics professor.

All this and Rotta the Hutt too on this week’s Star Wars Action News!

Episode 177: View from the Insider
January 12, 2009 | 10:46 PM EST | Jayson

Month after month they come into the mailbox, the Star Wars Insider. It has had almost as many publishers as Murphy Brown had secretaries, but now it is being run by international fanzine company Titan Magazines. Is it worth the cover price? Arnie and Marjorie dissect the latest issue on this week’s podcast of Star Wars Action News.

Also on this episode, Star Wars comic author Nathan P Butler (Star Wars Tales: Equals & Opposites) gives us a look at Dark Horse’s 2008 Star Wars crossover event–Vector. Last weekend the final issue of this 12 part saga was released. Was it worth all the hype and mystery, and does it live up to Dark Horse’s promise of being important? Nathan reveals all in this spoiler-filled review.

With a final look at the Diamond Darth Maul, a first look at Legacy Wave 6, and a brief bit of advice from Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother), it’s all this week on Star Wars Action News.

Another Price Hike?
January 12, 2009 | 2:27 PM EST | Justin2

You may have noticed that most e-tailers have raised the price on 2009 cases of figures. Well today I saw two different Wal-Marts that have raised their basic figures prices to $7.46 (up from $6.96) on both Clone Wars and Legacy figures.

The last thing the hobby needs is another price increase, so hopefully this is just a couple of isolated incidents. But if you’re seeing the same thing, let us know.

A New Hope… RiffTrax Style
January 1, 2009 | 6:39 PM EST | Jayson

For those of you unfamiliar with RiffTrax, it’s a hilarious running commentary on our favorite (or not so favorite) films brought to you by the same crew and voice over talent that were featured on Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (MST3K). Now they’ve added Star Wars: A New Hope to their RiffTrax catalog of movie spoofs joining the Prequel Trilogy and the infamous Holiday Special.

From RiffTrax:
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (Marin County, to be exact) George Lucas sparked up his favorite bong, kicked back in a bean bag chair and several gurgles later came up with the idea that would become the greatest movie of all time.* The story should be familiar to everyone: a moisture farmer leaves his beloved moisture farm (after a terrible moisture stampede), flies to the planet of Mos Def and eventually rescues a princess from the clutches of the evil Moff and destroys the horribly named Death Star. Who knew that the humble moisture farmer’s name would soon be on the lips of kids the world over: yes, Biggs Darklighter, hero of the rebellion. (Or was it Jek Porkins—we forget?)

This is, to be precise, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, the Special Edition “improved” by George Lucas for the DVD release (including a long and frankly shocking nude scene with Jabba the Hutt).

*Don’t storm our offices, Dark Knight fans, we acknowledge that it used to be the greatest movie of all time.
