Episode 183: Toy Fair Redux
February 24, 2009 | 6:53 PM EST | Jayson

However it may seem to us collectors and web site staff, Toy Fair doesn’t exist to excite collectors about toys, it’s there for toy manufacturers to hook up with toy distributors to get shelf space for toys each year. But not all manufacturers rely on distributors for sales, such as eFX and Sideshow Collectibles, and in this economy where every dollar counts some companies choose to excite collectors by making announcements during Toy Fair without actually taking the trip to New York. Sideshow Collectibles and Gentle Giant released a lot of information on new products this past week, and Star Wars Action News previews these items for you.

Also this week, we discuss the dearth of Yarnas that seem to be clogging many pegs, none more so than in Times Square in New York. Plus new Toys R Us and Target exclusives are showing up. We run these down.

With a UK Collecting Report, a Vintage Figure review, and your voicemails, it’s all this week on Star Wars Action News!

You can download this week’s show here or use the direct link: Regular or Enhanced Versions.

– Most of the new items here will be out after August, but Hasbro is apparently holding back some product from this show to break at SDCC (San Diego Comic Con) in July.

-In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of The Phantom Menace, there will be a mail-away promotion for the hard to find Eopie beast and includes the Evolution version of Qui-Gon Jinn. There will be stickers included with the TPM wave (wave 10) of figures to send off for it. (The Eopie itself is a repaint of the previous mold)

– The Hoth Rebel Soldier has until now been missing the soft goods skirt portion of the figure and apparently some leaked out of the factories without it. Fear not, the production error was caught and both version of the figures will include it.

– Packaging: Yes, all lines (Legends, Clone Wars and Legacy share the new card back design, and to differentiate between the 3, the bubble inserts will be different colors: Red for Clone Wars, Orange for Saga Legends and Blue-Gray for Legacy.

More as it becomes available….

Driven by the popularity of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated television series, the Force remained strong in 2008 as Star Wars catapulted to the Number 1 spot of all traditional toy licenses, according to The NPD Group, Inc., Lucasfilm Ltd. announced today. U.S. toy retail sales for the brand in 2008 exceeded $450M.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars was the single most popular licensed toy property in 2008 according to data released by the NPD Group. It was also, as a result, the top boys’ toy license of the year.

During the 2008 holiday season, U.S. retailers reported the strongest sales for Star Wars toys and products in the 31 years since the first Star Wars movie was released theatrically, even as the overall retail economy faced significant challenges.

Episode 181: State of Collecting Address 2009
February 10, 2009 | 11:45 AM EST | Jayson

The stores are full of stale Organas and Yarnas (congrats to all those who prognosticated Yarna’s future peg warming status). Manufacturers have been tight-lipped about new product, in some cases awaiting the glut of news that is Toy Fair and in other cases simply because there is no news. And figure prices are above the $7 mark everywhere, and some places over the $8 mark. There’s a lot of grimness out there, but there’s a bright future ahead for the hard core Star Wars collector. Here to analyze all the news or lack thereof, Star Wars Action News brings you the first State of Collecting Address.

Also this week, Fanboys opened in theaters telling the tale of four Star Wars fans trying to break on to Lucasfilm Ranch and see The Phantom Menace early. Reviewing this much-delayed film for Star Wars Action News are Brock and Elisha, hosts of the movie review podcast Now Playing.

With a bit of talk of Clone Wars Wave 4 and Build-A-Droid Wave 5, all this and more is on this week’s Star Wars Action News.

You can download this week’s show here or use the direct link: Regular or Enhanced Versions.

Also available, the newest episode of Republic Forces Radio Network is online now discussing — The Hidden Enemy, featuring clone intrigue and pointless lightsaber battles. Download it now.

Toyguide Update: TCW AT-TE Assault Squad
February 8, 2009 | 3:30 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the Clone Wars AT-TE Assault Squad Battle Pack.

This battle pack is based on the events of the Clone Wars movie where Anakin, Ahsoka and must attack the B’moarr Monastery in order rescue Rotta the Huttlet from Asajj Ventress and features 3 Recon Clone Troopers and the new AT-TE Gunner figure. The Recon clones are repaints of the standard white clone trooper with distinctive gray and red marking first utilized on the clones from Speeder Bike Recon Battle Pack. The clones from this set do not have the wide stance legs as the Recon Battle Pack clones had and most notably, one of them has what appears to be a different rank marking on the chest plate. (Two clones have 2 dots while the third has 3 dots). The highlight of this set is the AT-TE Gunner which feature new arms, torso and distinctive gunner helmet. And, if that wasn’t enough, this set includes more weapons (13 total) than any previous battle pack which is perfect for arming your collection of clone troopers or stocking the weapons hold of your AT-TE walker.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

These particular troopers serve and protect many important leaders and dignitaries on Coruscant and serve under the leadership of Commander Fox.

February 8, 2009 | 2:20 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the Target Exclusive Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi & 212th Attack Battalion Battle Pack.

Developed before the dark times of the smaller 4 figure battle packs, this instant army builder set includes a repack of the Clone Wars Obi-Wan figure (minus the interchangeable helmet) and four clone troopers* adorned with their distinctive orange 212th Battalion coloration.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

*These clone troopers utilize slightly different deco on their helmets and different helmet sculpt than the recently released 212th Attack Battalion Clone Trooper.

The Yakface Toyguide updates conclude tonight with the addition of the two Build-A-Droids from the fifth wave in the Legacy Collection: R5-A2, and R2-L3.

Seen as a background character on Tatooine in Episode IV, R5-A2 can be assembled by collecting the droid components* from the new Luke, Han, Spacetrooper and the Jawa figures. R2-L3 can be seen during Episode II in the streets of Mos Espa moments before Anakin’s discussion with Watto and he can be assembled by collecting the droid components* from the new Obi-Wan, Pons Limbic, Wioslea and Trinto Duaba figures.

Toyguide Update: TLC No. 37 Trinto Duaba & Dice Ibegon
February 6, 2009 | 10:53 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of Trinto Duaba & Dice Ibegon , the last figure in the Legacy Collection’s A New Hope wave.

Rounding out this wave, we are treated to two more cantina patrons who’ve also been on many fan wishlists. Hasbro pulled out the stops and has given us a couple highly detailed and articulated figures. Trinto Duaba, also known as “Terminal Man”, has the standard fare of articulation with swivel hips, wrists and waist and features ball jointed shoulders, knees and ankles. Sadly, he has the angle cut elbows that keep this from being a truly great figure on his own. Making up for it though, Trinto is packed with Dice Ibegon which is surprisingly large and well articulated, being able to position each arm independently and swiveling through the main body. Together, these figure bring the famous cantina scenes that much closer to completion.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: TLC No. 36 Wioslea
February 6, 2009 | 8:53 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of Wioslea from the Legacy Collection’s A New Hope wave.

Although dressed similarly to a member of the Jedi Order, Wioslea is the gal to see if you’re in the market or are looking to sell a landspeeder at the Mos Eisley Spaceport. This figure is one my favorites from this wave mostly because she is just so weird looking. Wioslea’s head is covered with eyeballs, adorned with antennae and has a mouth only a mother could love. The figure is an excellent representation of the movie’s depiction but also takes some artistic license in the leg and arm sculpt areas. The figure itself features a soft goods skirt and robe (complete with antennae holes) and has insert-moided (ball) joints in the shoulders, elbows and ankles. She also includes a blaster pistol (repacked from the McQuarrie Chewbacca) for when those speeder deals don’t go as planned.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Wedge w/ X-Wing Revealed

Thanks to Yakface reader Darth Stringfield for the heads up!

Toyguide Update: TLC No. 35 Pons Limbic
February 6, 2009 | 4:13 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume with the addition of Pons Limbic from the Legacy Collection’s A New Hope wave.

Hasbro goes back to what seems like a never ending well of characters from the A New Hope’s cantina scene and they do not disappoint. Pons Limbic*, or “Brainiac” to most Star Wars purists, has been on fan wishlists for years and what we end up with is everything you need in action figure – a full complement of articulation, a fantastic sculpt and a great paint job.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

*The name “Pons Limbic” is actual derived from medical terminology describing the system involving the brain and its components.

Toyguide Update: TLC Jabba’s Rancor & Luke Skywalker Battle Pack
February 5, 2009 | 8:03 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the addition of the Target Exclusive Jabba’s Rancor & Luke Skywalker Battle Pack from the Legacy Collection.

Oh Yes, the Rancor! What a difference a paint job makes! After what I think was an unsuccessful attempt at bringing the TFU Rancor to market last year (judging by the numbers that hit clearance), Hasbro/Target goes on the hook again this time for a much more accurate Return of the Jedi version. Gone are the harness and saddle, this time the Rancor is fitted with a removable wrist shackle and a fashionable metal earring. Also, this one features “Rancor Grip” – a substantial upgrade over the previous version in the form of a new right hand/claw that is now fully posable as opposed the pre-posed shape of the left hand. This Battle Pack also includes the Luke Skywalker Jedi Knight figure as previously released in the TAC line, complete with lightsaber, lightsaber hilt and bone accessories.

Overall, I think this set is well worth the $40 retail price and is sure to be in much higher demand than the TFU version so I wouldn’t necessarily expect it to make it to the clearance aisle.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

Big thanks to my friend Ryan L. for donating his set for picture day.

Episode 180: Fandex
February 3, 2009 | 5:56 AM EST | Jayson

eFX Collectibles gave us little advance notice before the Ahsoka Tano lightsaber, with a plaque signed by Dave Filoni, went on sale Feb 1st. This first saber replica from the new prop replica company is based on the design for Anakin Skywaker’s new Togruta padawan from the animated series, and to talk about the new product we interview Barry from eFX Collectibles. Barry describes what went into the Ahsoka lightsaber, the new Director’s Edition signature edition, and what the future holds for high end collectible offerings.

Then Brock, Star Wars Action News’ Book Club Liason, catches us up on Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. This spoiler-free review will tell you if this is a book you should shine a light on, or leave in the shadows.

Finally this week, Marjorie and Arnie catch you up on the latest in Star Wars collecting with the newest waves of figures and Muggs hitting shelves, Wal Mart clearance items, and a review of some odd item called the Star Wars Fandex.

All this, and a Hasbro Q&A too, on this week’s Star Wars Action News!

Toyguide Update: TCW No. 23 R3-S6 “Goldie”
February 1, 2009 | 4:44 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with the addition of the final figure in the Clone Warscollection’s fourth wave: R3-S6 aka “Goldie”.

After losing R2-D2 in a space battle during the episode “Downfall of a Droid”, Anakin begrudgingly takes on a new astromech, R3-S6 or “Goldie” as affectionally named by Padawan Ahsoka Tano. What little do they know it that this droid might not be playing for the same team. In the next episode “Duel of the Droids” R3’s motivations are discovered and the rescued R2-D2 puts him in his place – the scrap heap. As for the figure, at first glance he looks just be a repaint of the original Clone WarsR2-D2 mold, but that’s not entirely accurately. Goldie has new legs that forego the snap-on rocket booster accessories. All of the other features hold true though as he has the removable middle leg, opening manipulator arm panels, the retractable tow line and extendable sensorscope in the dome.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: TCW No. 22 Magnaguard
February 1, 2009 | 4:02 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the Clone Wars collection’sMagnaguard.

Developed for General Grievous’s need to have a more deadly and competent battle droid, the IG-100 Magnaguards serve as the droid commander’s personal bodyguards. This figure’s design is pulled right from the frames of the Clone Wars movie and TV series and, aside from their oversized feet, blend quite well with the realistically styled figures. As for articulation, the legs are lacking but the arms and torso are quite posable. For accessories, the Magnaguard includes the signature electrostaff and a rather large firing rocket launcher. Despite initial Hasbro SDCC presentation photos showing an alternate head sculpt available with this figures, no such piece was included. So, you can bet another version of this figure will be released in the not-to-distant future. In the meantime, the cloak from the ROTS era Magnaguards can be used and it works quite well.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: TCW No. 21 Clone Trooper with Space Gear
February 1, 2009 | 2:42 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with the addition of the Clone Wars collection’s Clone Trooper with Space Gear.

Clones, Clones, Clones. The Clone Wars are full of them and the current TV series seems to crank out new designs (much to Hasbro’s delight I’m sure) in nearly every episode. This particular design made its debut in the first episode of the Malevolence story arc “Rising Malevolence” and these unique clones serve under the command of Jedi Master Plo Koon. The figure itself features a removable, firing rocket pack (first available with the Obi-Wan figure) and includes space gear that incorporates a cool working holster for the small blaster.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: TCW No. 20 Padmé Amidala
February 1, 2009 | 1:51 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue today with the addition of the Clone Wars collection’sPadmé Amidala.

This figure revisits an Attack of the Clones costume design that was prominent in the Geonosis arena, while utilizing a portion of the outfit that was only shown during AOTC’s deleted scenes. The Clone Wars TV series has provided the opportunity to explore this design again and debut in the “Bombad Jedi” episode. While not the most articulated figure in the Clone Wars line up, it does feature a removable cowl and cape with working holster. She includes her signature blaster along with a battle droid blaster as well.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: TCW No. 19 Clone Trooper (212th Attack Battalion)
February 1, 2009 | 1:21 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates today with the addition of the Clone Wars collection’s Clone Trooperfrom the 212th Attack Battalion.

At first glance, this figure looked to just be a repack of the 212th clones included with the Target Exclusive Obi-Wan Kenobi and 212th Attack Battalion Battle Pack, but there are several differences ranging from deco application to a completely different sculpt for the helmet. This clone includes the standard issue DC-15A Blaster Rifle and large rocket launcher with firing projectile.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.
