Toyguide Update: Comic Pack #16 Ki-Adi-Mundi & Sharad Hett
March 26, 2009 | 8:39 PM CST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates today with the recently released Ki-Adi-Mundi and Sharad Hett Comic Pack.

Based upon their appearance in Dark Horse’s Star Wars Republic: “Outlander” comic, Ki-Adi-Mundi and Sharad Hett (who looks a lot like Michael Ironside) feature new sculpts (for the most part) with the all the necessary articulation – aside from Sharad’s slash cut elbow joints and the absence of ankle joints on both figures. Ki-Adi-Mundi features a removable breathing mask* and hat, where as Sharad Hett** includes a removable Tusken Raider head covering, a gaderffi stick and red version of Kit Fisto’s green lightsaber.

*For ease of assembly, it’s best to remove Ki-Adi’s head and attach the breathing mask from the bottom of the head. It will help to prevent the possibility of damaging the mask’s strap. Also, there is a small tab on the strap of the mask that fits into a small hole/depression on the back of Ki-Adi’s neck to aide in alignment.

**Sharad Hett reuses the arms, legs, lower tabard and Tusken hood from the A’Sharad Hett figure from the TAC Comic Pack.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

Episode 187: Expanded Universe Outcast
March 24, 2009 | 8:00 AM CST | Jayson

For the past three weeks Star Wars Action News has been continuing their March into the EU, celebrating the release of Aaron Allston’s novel Outcast this Tuesday, beginning the new Fate of the Jedi book series. But one question that keeps coming up is: can a newcomer to Star Wars books read Outcast? Taking place 43 years after the original Star Wars movie, so much has happened between the movies and this book (the New Jedi Order, the Legacy of the Force series, and more) can someone jump into the EU with this new book series? That is discussed on this week’s Star Wars Action News.

Also this week we have a spoiler-free review of the new book to see if it’s worth jumping onto.

And finally rounding out this week, we go on a hunt for Wal Mart and Target exclusives, a review of eFX Collectibles’ Studio Scale X-Wing, a UK Collecting report, and a Hasbro Q&A, it’s all this week on Star Wars Action News!

You can download this week’s show here or use the direct link: Regular or Enhanced Versions.

Want Some Free Legos?
March 19, 2009 | 8:04 AM CST | Jayson

Who doesn’t like free stuff? Since the Mini sets from Target were so fun to assemble the other day, I picked up a few extra sets and will be giving them away to the first 6 responders to send us photos of their Lego collections.

Here’s the catch (you knew there’d be one), since these Mini sets are geared towards the kiddies to put in their Easter baskets, they must include a young collector/child in the photograph. Once received, we’ll post the photos here and in our forums for all to see!

Up for grabs will be 3 of the V-19 Torrent Starfighter and 3 of the General Grievous’ Starfighter mini sets.

The contest will run until they’re gone and is open to US and Canada residents only.

You can send your submissions to yaksnews@yahoo.com with “Lego Giveaway” in the subject line.

Another Repaint/Repack Wave?
March 17, 2009 | 8:25 PM CST | Jayson

JediInsider has posted a few new carded shots of what they’re calling a Saga Legends wave, but it looks like they’re actually part of the TLC/BAD assortment.

Figures in this wave include:
BD #32 Spacetrooper
BD #42 Hoth Trooper (w/Beard)
BD #50 EII Anakin Skywalker (Evo Repack)
BD #51 Jango Fett (Evo Repack)
BD #52 Clone Pilot (Evo Repack)
BD #53 ARC Trooper (Target Order 66 series 2 repack)

Each of these figures include the HK-47 BAD parts and I’m guessing that these must serve as a buffer between the AOTC and TPM where the transition between the current and upcoming Red/White packaging must take place.

Head on over a take a look…

Toyguide Update: Entertainment Earth Joker Squad
March 17, 2009 | 5:54 AM CST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates today with the recently released Exclusive Joker Squad fromEntertainment Earth. Pulled from the comic pages of Star Wars Legacy 4: Noob, this squad of stormtroopers was commanded by Lord Maleval nearly 140 years after the Battle of Yavin.

We were first teased by these figures nearly a year ago in May 2008, and I think it’s a pretty good set overall. Lord Maleval is an all new figure that reuses the head developed for the Quarren Warrior in the Legacy Collection. He features a removable cloak containing a wire around the neck and bottom hems to assist posing. He also features a full complement of articulation and includes a lightsaber and shock whip*. The male stormtroopers in this set are all basically the same as the VOTC version, apart from their unique head sculpts and white holsters. Sadly, due to the varying sizes and shapes of the heads, some of the removable helmets fit better on some than on others. Sergeant Harkas is the worst offender in that regard. We’re also treated to the first female stormtrooper with Jes Ginstang, and she doesn’t disappoint.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

* The shock whip differs slightly from the solicitation photos as the production piece is a black string while the original photos show a blue strand.

Episode 186: Star Wars Radio Dramas — Lost Scenes Revealed
March 17, 2009 | 5:54 AM CST | Jayson

The Star Wars Radio Dramas are held in high regard by a large number of Star Wars fans. Once considered by Lucas himself part of the Star Wars canon, these Brian Daley penned audio dramas greatly expanded upon the original two Star Wars movies in the 80’s. Released on CD in regular and Special Edition format in the 90’s, the original broadcast of Star Wars was broadcast in 1981, and then again in 1983 when The Empire Strikes Back was released on National Public Radio. However, in the 1983 rebroadcast many scenes and character moments were cut from the Star Wars radio drama, and when the radio drama CDs were released in the 90’s not all of the cuts were reinstated.

This week on Star Wars Action News, we have producer David C. Fein who brings to us from the original 1981 airing of the radio drama the two dialogue scenes cut from Star Wars and not included in the CD releases. Unless you recorded the Star Wars Radio Drama off the radio in 1981, Star Wars Action News is the only place to hear these two scenes, including Luke and Cammie talking about their dreams in anchorhead, and an extended version of Obi-Wan and Luke talking after the Tusken Raider attack.

Also this week, we review the Clone Wars novel Wild Space, and discuss the latest store finds. All this and more on this week’s Star Wars Action News.

TAC Deena Shan Head Variant Found
March 16, 2009 | 12:48 PM CST | Jayson

During the TAC line, there were a few rumors floating about that there was an alternate head sculpt available for the Deena Shan figure from the TAC Lt. Jundland & Deena Shan Comic Pack. I was able to find said variant and my local Wal-Mart this weekend. The head sculpt differs greatly from the original, though most obvious is the inclusion of the hair “bun” on the back of her head. The overall shape of the head/face is larger necessitating a larger removable hat as well. Head toour forums for a few quick shots of this and look for its addition to the Toyguide soon.

Toyguide Update: Lego Section Update
March 14, 2009 | 9:34 PM CST | Jayson

In case you hadn’t noticed, the Yakface Toyguide pages have been going through a series of format upgrades over the last few months. The upgrades are being done to make them more esthetically pleasing in terms of overall layout and cut down on the need for excess vertical scrolling. TheLegacy and Clone Wars sections were the first sections to kick off this format, and now the Lego section gets a reformat as well. While all the images for that section have yet to be added, you’ll find many of the sets available for viewing (complete with part counts) thanks to Mark’s extensive personal collection. Look for many more Lego set additions soon.

Also, keep your eyes open for a few new Toyguide features coming in the not-too-distant future.

The Star Wars EU/Watchmen Connection
March 9, 2009 | 7:34 PM CST | Jayson

With this past weekend’s release of the Watchmen movie, attention has once again focused on the landmark graphic novel published by DC Comics from 1986 through 1987. The book — originally presented as 12-issue limited series — is heralded as one of the greatest works of graphic fiction, and is the sole graphic novel to rank in TIME magazine’s 100 best English language novels from 1923 to the present.

The visionary work of scribe Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons is a must-read for any enthusiast of sequential art. What Star Wars fans may not realize is that both Moore and Gibbons have dabbled in the expanded universe of Star Wars publishing, each contributing to Star Wars storytelling. So, in a fairly transparent bid to draft off some of the chatter Watchmen is getting these days, we present a look back at these works by Moore and Gibbons
