Episode 209: A Major Loose Vintage Haul
August 25, 2009 | 9:57 PM EST | Jayson

Vintage collecting is a niche that is often overlooked. With Hasbro bringing out well over 100 figures each year between carded, battle packs, and Clone Wars, it is all too easy to forget about the toys of yesteryear, that so many of us Star Wars fans played with growing up. But for Star Wars Action News, the time for vintage was now as a seemingly once in a lifetime vintage buy was had. What did they get? How much did they pay? Listen to this week’s Star Wars Action News to find out!

Also this week, they review the recently revealed Gentle Giant Star Wars Dartboard, discuss the new circulating rumors of the Star Wars live action series, and have a Hasbro Q&A answering questions about the Asajj Ventress F/X saber and how Hasbro has determined Ahsoka Tano to be “the bestselling female Star Wars figure of all time”.

Listen to all this and more on this week’s podcast of Star Wars Action News!

Episode 208: Collecting Bytes
August 18, 2009 | 3:39 PM EST | Jayson

We’ve talked about collecting figures, busts, statues, bookmarks, candy, and Band-Aids. But this week on Star Wars Action News, we begin a look at a new type of collecting–the collecting of digital fan audio. Do you download all the episodes of Star Wars Action News and keep them on your hard drive? Have you sought out the exclusive movie commentaries they have released, or the special music CD they gave out at Celebration 4? If so, then you are already a digital collector. This week, Nathan P. Butler talks about collecting another type of fan audio–the fan audio drama, which is where Star Wars fan fiction meets old timey radio productions.

Also this week on Star Wars Action News: scantily clad ladies! Where? Well, they’re at the Lucasfilm Chicago ComicCon presentation, in the prize-winning Saber fan video, and even on StarWars.com! Listen to find out more.

With details on all the exclusives still available online (*cough* Gentle Giant *cough*) and the sightings of the newest figures, and a review of the Uncle Milton Dagobah Frog Habitat, it’s all this week on Star Wars Action News!

You can download this week’s show here or use the direct link: Audio or Enhanced Versions.

Be sure to head over to Star Wars Action News and check out their new website design as well!

Toyguide Update: CW20 Clone Trooper Denal
August 14, 2009 | 7:39 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the addition of Clone Trooper Denal, the next entry to the rapidly expanding Clone Wars section.

Making his debut in the popular episode “Duel of the Droids”, Denal and a squad of clones join Captain Rex, Ahsoka and Anakin in an assault on the separatist listening post “Skytop Station”.

Hasbro again offers up another unique trooper with Clone Trooper Denal. He shares the the standard super articulated clone trooper body which has been slightly modified to accept the post from the new missile-firing JT-12 jetpack and also shares the head sculpt from Commander Cody (without the facial scars) and Echo. He features the new style removable clone trooper helmet (first used onCommander Gree) but this displays the distinctive blue color of the 501st Legion and has a custom design with “tears” on each cheek. For accessories, he includes the standard issue DC-15A blaster and 2 missiles; the longer missile launches from the backpack and the other serves as a plug to finish off the design of the jetpack when not in firing mode.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: CW17 Clone Trooper Echo
August 11, 2009 | 9:46 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the addition of Clone Trooper Echo, the next entry to the rapidly expanding Clone Wars section.

Making his debut in the popular episode “Rookies”, Echo and contingent of clones are stationed at the listening post on the Rishi Moon tasked with warning Kamino of potential Separatist attacks. Soon the output is infiltrated by the Commando Droids and Commander Cody, Captain Rex, Echo and the other “shinies” devise a plan to retake the station.

The Clone Wars is populated with nameless and faceless soldiers, but here, Hasbro offers up another unique trooper in Clone Trooper Echo. Although he shares the SA clone trooper body and the head sculpt from Commander Cody (without the facial scars), he does have a few distinguishing characteristics. He features a removable helmet with adjustable binocular visor and his armor displays a blue bloody hand print as shown in the aforementioned “Rookies” episode. For accessories, Clone Trooper Echo includes the standard DC-15A blaster and a missile-firing Z-6 rotary blaster cannon. If there was any one change I’d like for this figure (other than a more battle worn deco of course) would be for his armor to have included the small medal on his chest plate as seen at the end of the episode.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

August 10, 2009 | 10:33 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the addition of Commander Gree, the next entry to the rapidly expanding Clone Wars section.

Sporting his Phase I style armor, Commander Gree is the latest figure to be released in the popular Clone Wars line joining the ranks of the other clone officers like Rex, Cody, Fox and Ponds. As with all clones in this series, Gree is loaded with 14 points of articulation, plus he also features a removable helmet revealing a distinctive double mohawk head sculpt, a removable bandolier, working holster, a DC-17 hand blaster, DC-15A blaster rifle and a firing missile launcher*.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

*The back of the packaging shows Gree carrying a Z-6 rotary blaster cannon, while the final figure actually includes the firing missile launcher.

In the Clone Wars series story arc “The Ryloth Trilogy”, Mace Windu and the ARF Troopers of Lightning Squadron, led a force to liberate the Twi’lek homeworld of Ryloth from Wat Tambor’s and the CIS forces.

Master Windu is the latest Jedi to be released in the popular Clone Wars line, and like others in this style, he’s a fairly good figure but sadly lacks the necessary articulation to be truly great as he too is devoid of knee and ankles joints. Also, Mace has another strike against him in some respect as he is designed with a “Swinging Lightsaber Action”. A feature that, for me, is ultimately unnecessary and I’d rather have seen those tooling dollars devoted to a couple of knee joints. As for accessories, he includes his signature purple-bladed lightsaber, 3 pieces of snap-on armor and a helmet all of which are oddly cast in a light gray/off-white plastic that clashes with the bright white armor on his forearms.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: 212th Battalion Clone Troopers and Backpacks
August 6, 2009 | 10:31 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today featuring the first addition in the new Figure & Vehicle Assortment with the 212th Battalion Clone Troopers and Backpacks.

Led, by Clone Commander Cody, these clone troopers of the 212th Attack Battalion are specially equipped with a pair of missile firing, jet-propelled backpacks which are used for aerial assaults or to circumvent difficult terrain.

The clone figures included in this set may appear the same as previous 212th Battalion clones as they share the same armor deco and articulation, but there are a few key differences. Their armor has been modified to receive the post from the removable jetpack and most noticeable change though is that both of these clones have been molded in a light gray plastic. It is quite possible that this was done to further designate these clones as their own unit or it was done in lieu of adding a secondary weathering/battle damage paint operation. Whatever the reasoning, these figure do stand apart from the basic figure release. In terms of accessories, this set includes: 2 missile firing jet/backpacks with deployable wings (repurposed from the ROTS line), 2 standard issue clone blasters, a blaster rifle and a battle droid blaster. The weapons from this set are molded in a silvery blue plastic that further enhances this sets uniqueness.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: 2009 Wal-Mart Droid Factory Two-Pack 5 of 5
August 5, 2009 | 5:10 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the fifth anf final Wal-mart Exclusive Droid Factory Set featuring Corran Horn and R2 Whistler.

This set is based on the novel I, Jedi where Corran Horn, a force-sensitive X-wing pilot from Rogue Squadron, who attempts to find his missing wife who disappeared while tracking down pirates. He turns to Luke Skywalker in hopes to be trained in the ways of the Force.

Corran Horn is a kitbash creation based off the ever popular VOTC/VTSC Luke Skywalker X Wing Pilot figure and he includes an AOTC Anakin Skywalker-style lightsaber and hilt (with the addition of the black paint on the activation band and emitter shroud) and a unique deco X-Wing Pilot Helmet. The R2-unit “Whistler”, like CB-3D from the set #1, is a repaint/kitbash of the VOTC R2-D2 mold and again the utility arm panel is glued down. This set also includes the torso/body for thePhase III Dark Trooper Build-A-Droid.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: 2009 Wal-Mart Droid Factory Two-Pack 4 of 5
August 5, 2009 | 3:56 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the Wal-mart Exclusive Droid Factory Set #4 featuring Darth Maul & I-5YQ.

This set is based on Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, a novel that takes place shortly before Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Darth Maul is a repack of the figure from the TAC and TLC The Sith Legacy Evolution Set but he is further accessorized here with a soft goods Sith robe. I-5YQ is a partial kitbash construct, using repainted TAC 4-LOM arms and legs and features new sculpts for the head and torso/hip section. I-5YQ features a “hidden” compartment in his chest that opens to reveal a removable holocron. This set also includes the left and right legs for the Phase III Dark Trooper Build-A-Droid.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: 2009 Wal-Mart Droid Factory Two-Pack 3 of 5
August 5, 2009 | 2:41 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the Wal-mart Exclusive Droid Factory Set #3 featuring Boba Fett and BL-17.

This set is based on an episode of Star Wars: Droids – The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO animated series entitled “A Race to the Finish”, where Boba Fett utilized the Battle Legionnaire droid BL-17 to infiltrate a group of speeder racers that were responsible for the destruction of the gangster Sise Fromm’s weapons satellite.

Boba Fett is virtually a repack of the TAC Animated Debut Boba Fett, with some slight differences in deco most notably on the helmet. Fett’s weapons in this set are also different from the TAC figure as it includes both the rifle and blaster pistol from the Fett Evoution Set. Since the pistol is of a different design, it doesn’t fit nearly as well in the included holster. BL-17 is a partial kitbash construct, using repainted TAC 4-LOM arms and legs and features new sculpts for the head and single piece torso/hip section. This set also includes the rocket pack for the Phase III Dark TrooperBuild-A-Droid.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: 2009 Wal-Mart Droid Factory Two-Pack 2 of 5
August 5, 2009 | 12:21 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the Wal-mart Exclusive Droid Factory Set #2 featuring Anakin Skywalker and Cortosis Battle Droid.

This set is based on The New Droid Army video game where Anakin is tasked with stopping the creation of a new battle droid army following the Battle of Geonosis. These new battle droids are constructed using cortosis, a material capable of blocking lightsaber attacks, adding to their effectiveness.

Anakin is virtually the same figure that is included in the TAC Republic #57 Comic Pack, the difference being there is no “battle damage” painted on his face. The C-B3 Cortosis Battle Droid is a kitbash/repaint of the TAC Super Battle Droid and features a new head/torso and both forearms/grasping hands have been replaced with double-barreled laser cannons. This set also includes the left and right arms for the Phase III Dark Trooper Build-A-Droid.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: 2009 Wal-Mart Droid Factory Two-Pack 1 of 5
August 5, 2009 | 10:43 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume with the addition of the Wal-mart Exclusive Droid Factory Set #1 featuring General Grievous and CB-3D.

This set is based on the four-part comic series General Grievous, in which a group of Jedi attempt to assassinate the droid general before his diabolical plans can be carried out.

General Grievous is a repack of the ROTS #09 figure and includes a new removable cloth cape (which works fairly well in this application) and the astromech, CB-3D, is a repaint/kitbash of the VOTC R2-D2 mold featuring the glued down utility arm panel. This set also includes the head and blaster rifle for the Phase III Dark Trooper Build-A-Droid.

Head to the toyguide to see if this set is worth adding to your collection.

2009’s San Diego Comic Con is behind us but with so much product revealed from Museum Replicas, eFX, Sideshow, Hasbro, Gentle giant, Diamond, and others, it sometimes takes a while for it all to sink in.

On this week’s Star Wars Action News, we take your voicemails to talk about what YOU thought of all the new Star Wars items coming down the pike, including Sideshow 1/2 scale busts (with the missing half being a shoulder?), Gentle Giant’s Force Unleasehed mini-busts, and Hasbro’s new Wal Mart Exclusive Droid Factory figures ($17 a pair? Ouch!)

Also on this week’s show, we talk about the new Hasbro Fan’s Choice figure vote, where you can help determine a new Star Wars figure to be made by Hasbro. Star Wars Action News is one of the contributing sites, so listen to the show, then come to our forums at http://www.swactionnews.comand tell us which figures you think should be made.

It’s all this and more on this week’s episode of Star Wars Action News!

Toyguide Update: CW16 Commando Droid
August 3, 2009 | 12:36 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the Commando Droid, the next addition to the exploding Clone Wars section.

Making their debut in the popular Clone Wars episode “Rookies”, the Commando Droids proved that they were far more advanced in both combat and intelligence than their inferior Battle Droid counterparts.

The “Rookies” episode all but guaranteed that this figure was going to make it into our collections and Hasbro did a fine job in granting our wishes. The Commando Droid features a ton of articulation with ball jointed shoulders, elbows, knees, ankles, plus ball socket hips and head and a swivel torso. This range joints allow for some pretty dynamic posing possibilities, far more than most of the Jedi characters have been graced with – which is sad frankly. We not given much in the was of accessories but we do get a unique battle droid blaster that is capable of being attached via a post to the Commando Droid’s back. Sadly, the vibroblade that some of these droids wielded in the episode isn’t included but look for it to be packed in an upcoming battle pack later this year featuring a Clone Trooper, 2 Commando Droids and unique deco Commando Droid Unit Leader.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Toyguide Update: CW15 Whorm Loathsom
August 3, 2009 | 12:12 PM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume with the addition of Whorm Loathsom, the next addition to the exploding Clone Wars section.

Making his debut in The Clone Wars movie, Whorm Loathsom served as a general of the CIS forces responsible for the invasion and capture of the planet Christophsis. He was ultimately defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Army of the Republic.

This figure is a faithful attempt in recreating General Loathsom’s appearance in the film, complete with exaggerated proportions and several underbite. Interestingly, this character’s design is based off an unused concept created by Doug Chaing for the Neimoidians in Episode I. It features moderate articulation with ball-joint shoulders and elbows, a ball socket head and swivel hip, waist and wrist joints. For accessories, Whorm includes removeable “shoulder pads”, small blaster pistol and a firing missile launcher designed similarly to a standard battle droid blaster rifle.

Head to the toyguide to see if this figure is worth adding to your collection.

Group Project – The Cauldron
August 3, 2009 | 12:10 PM EST | Justin2

The Cauldron was a large gladiatorial arena on the planet Rattatak and is where Asajj Ventress first impressed Count Dooku by easily slaughtering the contestants. She faced various creatures from throughout the galaxy, from Gamorreans to giant Wampa ice creatures.

Hasbro has largely neglected this scene from the Clone Wars, but customizers are rolling up their sleeves and are creating their own versions of the gladiators seen in The Cauldron in the currentGroup Project. Head on over to the forums and join in the fun, or just check out the entries so far after the jump!
