Our friend James Burns from JediNews lands a sweet first look and interview with Jean Gomez, VP of Hot Wheels, from Mattel in the latest issue of Star Wars Insider due on newsstands soon. I received my subscription copy today but I won’t a spoil the article. Instead, here is a tease of what we can expect to see as part of Mattel’s SDCC exclusive.
Confirming Jedi Temple Archives’ original Toy Fair report, Entertainment Earth and Big Bad Toy Store are now taking pre-orders for vehicle and race track assortments of Hot Wheels product. Look for them online and in stores this fall. No images are available yet, but I really hope they make those sweet cars from the 70’s and 80’s like the custom vans and Toyota Celica.
Wired has posted a very cool infographic on how LEGO has completely turned around since they started licensing sets – a decision which has lead them to become the most profitable toymaker in the world.
For a long time now, Star Wars collectors have rightfully complained about the distribution and availability of figures at retail — the ones they want to buy any way — and have suggested that Hasbro, through their website, offer a subscription service in the vein of what Mattel does with their Matty Collector programs. If there has ever been a clearer example of why this should be AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS I haven’t seen it.
Unlike Hasbro, Mattel has decided to give collectors of their Masters of the Universe Classics line a chance at a massive playset – an ultimate Castle Grayskull.
It’s pricey, but if enough collectors sign up for a pre-order, then He-Man fans will be able to own a truly awesome item to be the centerpiece of their collections.
We wish collectors of this line the best, and salute Mattel for trying to make this happen!
Special thanks to Paulskywalker for the heads up!
