The Death Star Review
October 28, 2007 | 6:33 PM EST | Holocron_Master_Nick

The Death Star
Written by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry

Reviewed by Holocron Master Nick

We all know the fate of the original Death Star, well, unless you’ve never seen the original trilogy or if this is the first Star Wars book you’ve read, then maybe you don’t and I’m not gonna ruin it by telling you. What I can tell you is that Michael Reaves along with Steve Perry have both separately written other Star Wars novels and together have written the two unique Medstar novels. Of which, one of the characters from those books is present in Death Star, Dr. Uli Davini.
We know that this book takes place quite a few decades later from the Phantom Menace when we first got a glimpse of a secret project that was brought to the Geonosions for further refinement and support of its construction. We also know it is still in its infancy at the beginning of the book, just a skeletal structure. Much like what was in the Return of the Jedi.
We can also figure in that those characters such as Tarkin, Vader and the Emperor will most likely be mentioned or make appearances.
But what you don’t know, until you read the book is that it is filled with brand new characters, alien species and personalities that you might not have figured would be involved in something that can literally blow up planets. Reaves and Perry do a great job of introducing these characters and making some of them actually likable and you begin to forget that they are the “bad guys.”
If you’ve ever seen the movie Clerks, there’s a discussion between the two main characters about the building of the Death Star and unions and how many workers it took and all that stuff. Those are some of the questions maybe a lot of people had or perhaps maybe some people never even wondered about how it was built.
The Death Star does tell us the logistics, the planning, the slave labor and the machinations of Tarkin and a few others that got this monstrosity built. It was to be the ultimate deal breaker or deal maker, when dealing with the societies and planets that were to fall in line with the Empire.
They use a clever name for the prison planet that the Death Star is being built in orbit above and they even reference an old Playstation game called Teräs Käsi, a strange fighting game that really never took off. You’ll find that they’ve (the authors) done their homework and then some. There’s also some more insight into Vader’s situation and his thoughts and to why he’s stuck in an outdated tech of a life-support suit.
It may not be my favorite Star Wars novel, nor is it in my top ten of favorites, but it is a decent read. And for those who have or had questions about how the thing was actually built, well the science of it sounds pretty good and makes sense, mostly.
At first it seems that there may be too many characters to follow and it is a little confusing, but as the story goes along you get into a rhythm of switching from one character to another. As it goes the chapters are on average 3-4 pages long, which can be a good thing when you don’t have a lot of time and want to advance the story a bit, but it can get a little annoying; if it were a movie there would be jump cuts every few minutes and they would seem to not go together at all. But since it is a book and you have the ability to go back a few pages to review what the specific character was doing or what the scene was, well it helps a little.
If you’re looking for lots of action, this isn’t the book. If you like Star Wars references and foreshadowing there’s a bunch of that, even down to a remark as to what may be living in the garbage compactors.
Is there humor? Yes. But it’s the Star Wars universe kind of humor and you may have to be up on your movies to get some of it. Plus, through out the book they may have used the word big and other variations of the descriptive, a bit too much. We get the idea that it’s huge, but as it goes we’re subject to the thoughts and words of the characters that are seeing it for the first time and what their reactions are.
Is the book boring? Yes and no. Like I said it’s mostly about the design, construction and implementation of the tools and workers it took to construct the battle station and for some people that is interesting, but for those who are reading say The Legacy of the Force series it may be a bit dull.
Reaves and Perry are excellent writers, whether they are doing their own books or collaborating on one like this, but there’s only so much they can do with the subject material and they do, do their best.
Since this is my first review for Yakface and I appreciate the chance and opportunity to do so, I’m gonna implement a small grading scale. We’ll go with lightsabers. One lightsaber is not good, but five lightsabers is really good. So for this book, I’d have to give it 2 lightsabers.
Since I’ll be reviewing other Star Wars novels and I’ll also try to get to the comics too, if people want those reviewed, let me know in the forums. My forum name is Tek Vorian, but I’ll be reviewing under the title Holocron Master Nick. For other books, I’ll probably do a spoiler version and a non-spoiler version, for those who just want to know if it’s worth their time or not.
If anyone has questions or comments, please address them to Tek Vorian in the forums. Thank you and happy reading!

UPDATE: Forum is back up!
October 24, 2007 | 10:50 PM EST | Brandon

Hello fellow readers! As I know many of you are aware, our forum server is currently down. We’re experiencing some issues related to php, cgi, and script errors and are working diligently on the backend to get the server back up and running. At this moment we have no approximation regarding when the forum will be back up and running but we plan to keep members informed with server updates. We understand that there are a lot of contests running right now because of the Anniversary Bash and the hosts will work hard to change deadlines to accomadate. That just means we’ll be celebrating our Anniversary in November (even longer! YAY!). Thanks for being patient while we remedy the situation!

UPDATE: The forums are back up and running! We are sorry for this outage. We had to take the server down for some preventative maintainence. We will try in the future to provide more notice to members for future downtimes.

Episode 113: Steve Sansweet on Star Wars’ 30th
October 22, 2007 | 7:24 PM EST | Jayson

This week on Star Wars Action News, hosts Marjorie and Arnie have an experience that is familiar to many collectors–the item you dread opening. Maybe because it was a purchase that you don’t know where to put, maybe it’s something you don’t want to face because you spent more than you should, or perhaps it’s something that seemed nice in theory but isn’t as nice as you’d thought. This week Marjorie holds up a mirror and makes Arnie take a long look at an item he’s dreaded opening… What is this item? Listen to this week’s show to find out!

Also this week we have part one of a two part interview with Lucasfilm’s Director of Content Management and mega-collector Steve Sansweet. This week we talk to Steve about the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars, the exit of Master Replicas from Star Wars products, and what happened to the Collectibles Visual Guide that was supposed to come out in September.

Plus, store reports on where you can find Wave 5 (but you may get raked over the Kohl’s) and what UGHs are plentiful, all this week on Star Wars Action News!

You can download this week’s show from swactionnews.com, the standard version directly here and the enhanced version directly here.

Thanks for listening!

More Finds at KOHL’S
October 21, 2007 | 3:44 PM EST | Justin2

Yakface Reader R. Stephens writes in with the following:

I hit KOHLS in Green Bay today and found several new
Saga Legends including Wave 3 Darktrooper, Clone
Commander, and the Green and Yellow Clone Troopers. I
was very much surprised to find Wave 4 Dirty
Sandtrooper (Squad Leader), TC-14, R4-19, and Biker
Scout. They are still on sale at 30% off and a $10.00
off of your next purchase.

R. Stephens
Keshena, Wisconsin

Thanks for the heads up! As always, these finds are sometimes on a store by store basis, so there’s no guarantee that everyone’s area retailers will have the same waves in stock. The past month has shown more newer figures hitting at various retailers however, so we hope this means the latest waves will be easier for everyone to find this Fall.

Episode 112: Death Star and Arnie Likes Goooooold
October 17, 2007 | 7:36 AM EST | Jayson

This week the new Star Wars novel from Del Rey is being released, and to celebrate Star Wars Action News brings you not one but two interviews. We sit down with Steve Perry and Michael Reeves, co-authors of Death Star, to discuss the book and how it came to be. This book is a great entry point into the EU for fans not up on the Star Wars novels, and is also a wonderful read with links to the current continuity for those who have read every Star Wars book to date.

Also this week, how can it be that Marjorie found over 30 UGHs at Toys R Us? And not just her but several others. What is going on? We take listener voice mails and tell our own stories to find out!

Finally this week, Arnie and Scott both reexamine their collecting habits. Collecting costs a lot of money, and a lot of space. Listen as they decide how they will be collecting going forward, and they give their advice to the companies producing Star Wars merchandise for what we’d like to see in 2008.

All this, plus a Hasbro Q&A to boot, in this week’s Star Wars Action New

You can download this week’s show from swactionnews.com, the standard version directly here and the enhanced version directly here.

Thanks for listening!

Toyguide Update: #33 Anakin Skywalker (Jedi Knight)
October 9, 2007 | 10:25 PM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates continue with the addition of Anakin Skywalker (Jedi Knight). Based on his appearance in the Clone Wars Cartoon Vol. 2, this version depicts Anakin as he prepares to face his final trials complete with Nelvaanian grub markings, cybernetic “ghost hand” and interchangeable destroyed cybernetic hand.

Toyguide Update: #32 Yoda & Kybuck
October 9, 2007 | 9:28 PM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates continue with the addition of Yoda & Kybuck. Being the Yoda fan that I am, I peed a little when this figure was first revealed and now that I’ve acquired one for myself, it lives up to the hype. The Yoda figure itself includes a soft goods robe with cute little ear holes and a lightsaber bandolier, complete with removable hilt. The Kybuck (some assembly required) is essentially a Clone Wars version of a Tauntaun and is comparably articulated. Too bad we didn’t get the one with the cool blue eye shields. : (

Toyguide Update: #29 Hermi Odle
October 9, 2007 | 8:57 PM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates continue with the addition of Hermi Odle. Ranking right up there with Ephant Mon as one of the largest figure in the modern Kenner/Hasbro line ever produced, Hermi Odle ups the ante with more articulation and includes soft goods to boot! Granted Hasbro probably looses their collective shirts with each one they produce, but so what, we wanted him and we finally got him. Now if we can only get Yarna D’al Gargan and a new Yakface…. hmmmm.

Toyguide Update: Saga Legends Boba Fett
October 9, 2007 | 7:13 AM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the Saga Legends Boba Fett. Here’s your chance to acquire a superior figure without paying the inflated VOTC/VTSC prices. This version of Boba Fett is styled after his appearance in ROTJ (and technically the SE of ANH) and has a boat load of articulation. And for those who care about such things, he still includes the blaster rifle sculpt from ESB rather than the proper ANH/ROTJ version.

Toyguide Update: Saga Legends Clone Trooper Officer
October 9, 2007 | 6:57 AM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates today with the addition of the Saga LegendsClone Trooper Officer. Now here is a figure I’ve waited for for a long time… a long time. I missed out for some reason on the Entertainment Earth exclusive Clone Trooper sets that were available back in 2003. Now I have some superior officers to boss around the infantry clones I’ve been hoarding for years. Variations for this figure include: Yellow “Commander”, Red “Captain”, Blue “Lieutenant”, Green “Sergeant”.

Wave 6 Shipping from Newforcecomics

As I got home from work this evening, I noticed a package at my front door. It suddenly hit me that I had pre-ordered Wave 6 from Newforcecomics.comseveral months back.

Now if I had only remembered ordering this before I went on a dozen dry toy runs last week searching aimlessly at Walmarts for a couple of McQuarrie Snowtroopers…

Anyways, if you pre-ordered these from Newforcecomics.com, hopefully you’ll be getting the latest wave delivered this week too.

Sandtrooper Variant Finds Continue
October 4, 2007 | 9:34 PM EST | Justin2

As a follow up to last night’s report on the Sandtrooper variants showing up, I ran into the orange pauldron Sandtrooper today at Walmart, and a couple of Yakface readers have also emailed in with reports of seeing all three versions at Walmarts as well.

Special thanks especially to Tony P. for sending in the above image of the three variants.

Toyguide Update: Basic Figure Coin “TAILS GUIDE”
October 4, 2007 | 9:36 AM EST | Jayson

I received an inquiry from a local collector friend of mine wondering if I could add a list of the different coin backs or “tails” and indicate which figures either share or have unique tails. So, taking the suggestion, I’ve updated the TAC Collector Coins page to show the breakdown. This page will be update regularly as I acquire the coins. I also modified the page slightly so as you move your mouse over each coin, the image will change to reveal the tail of the coin as well. And remember, to see larger views of each coin head and/or tail – just click it.

Thanks to my friend Ryan for the suggestion.

Variant Sandtrooper Hitting Retail
October 4, 2007 | 2:10 AM EST | Justin2

In all the excitement with Walmart stores already getting in Waves 5 and 6 in some areas, you might also want to keep your eyes open for the clean variant on the Legends Sandtrooper at Walmart – the all white trooper that looks like he just got his shoes shined on the Death Star.

So, if you’re still trying to add VOTC-esque Stormies to your collection, or don’t like the removable helmet Stormtrooper, you might be able increase your Imperial ranks with the CLEAN SANDTROOPER.

Brace Yourselves for Smashed Orders from TRU.com
October 2, 2007 | 7:32 PM EST | Jayson

I just got home to find my TRU shipment (2 Concept Vaders and Hermi Odle) on my doorstep.

Did they come in a nice sturdy box with bubble wrap? NO

Did they come in a cheap, crappy box with packing peanuts? NO

Did they come in a bubble wrap envelope smashed? YES!

I’m not sure if this is typical shipping practice from TRU.com when they offer “FREE shipping” but if I’d have known I would have gladly paid for it.

So, be prepared to receive something similar on your doorsteps.

NOTE: I have a local friend that ordered from them as well and he received his packed in a box (with packing material even), so your individual experiences my vary.

Click the photos above to witness the smashed goodness : (

Episode 110: It’s beginning to look too much like X-mas
October 1, 2007 | 2:04 PM EST | Jayson

Wow…Arnie and Marjorie are preparing for Halloween…but the stores are preparing for CHRISTMAS??? Toy aisles are being stocked, Christmas decorations are being put out, and it’s certainly shaping up to be another Star Wars laden holiday season. Marjorie and Arnie give a run-down of the Christmas items in their toy aisle, and Jakob reveals his favorites of the new Star Wars items.

Also this week, apparantly Christmas is a great time for books as Del Rey, Dark Horse, and all the other publishers have kept Nathan hopping with his Star Wars EU and stories report. If you like your media in CD, book, PSP, or packed with an action figure, Nathan brings you up to speed on all the offerings from Star Wars right now.

Last week Hasbro revealed the winners of their Fan’s Choice poll for rereleases in the Saga Legends line. Arnie and Marjorie weigh in on these figures, remembering their original releases, and Nathan takes a few minutes to explain what the heck a “Shadow Stormtrooper” is anyway.

Plus Scott’s weekly run-down, listener voice mails, an e-bay item of the week that’s not to be missed, and a call for help for one of our own in the Star Wars collecting community, that is all in this week’s Star Wars Action News.

You can download this week’s show from swactionnews.com or directly here.

Thanks for listening!
