2008… Year of the Shrinkage?
January 31, 2008 | 3:02 AM EST | Justin2

As Hasbro continues to add new standards of articulation and sculpting, they also seem to be making some figures smaller than in years past. This holds true with at least two figures from the first wave of 2008.

Which figures have Hasbro reduced in size for the new ROTS wave? Can the Mustafar Panning Droid support an Anakin figure? Find out the answers to these questions and more after THE JUMP!

Thanks to forum member “DarthKozy”, from the SWAN forums, those questions can now be answered. He has sent me a few quick shots of the “area” that has received the most attention by Hasbro’s sculptors:The Crotch. Click on for the super articulated goodness – but not too much or you’ll go blind! ; P

Episode 127: What to buy, what to buy, what to buy?
January 28, 2008 | 6:59 AM EST | Jayson

One of the great joys of collecting items like Hasbro and Gentle Giant and Sideshow is that it truly seems never-ending. No sooner do you think you finish with one line then another pops up. Such is certainly the case right now with Hasbro figures; as most people are starting to put their 2007 collections to bed, reports are coming in about the first wave of 2008 figures being spotted at Wal Marts, including by our own customizing expert Darth Kozy. Kozy sat down and tore open his Wave 8 finds and recorded his thoughts on these newest of figures.

Of course sometimes you do hit a dry spell with no new action figures to buy, and when that happens…well, Jakob is here to tell us what he did in that situation.

All this and more on this week’s Star Wars Action News

Vector, What’s That?
January 24, 2008 | 4:32 AM EST | Holocron_Master_Nick

As some of you may know or may not know, that this year is the year of Vector. Its an on going storyline that starts with Knights of the Old Republic #25-28, then jumps to Dark Times #11-12, then on to Rebellion #15-16 and ends with Legacy #29-32 at the end of 2008. This cross-over spans forty centuries and will “involve, embroil, and ensnare major characters from one end of the Star Wars timeline to the other.”

I’m not really sure how they’re going to pull it off, but it does sound intriguing enough to continue buying the comics. I’ll try to get out some reviews of them when they hit the shelves. Here’s the link to Dark Horse comics. There’s a little bit of info, not much but they do show the cover of that issue. There’s a four page preview which is awesome to say the least, especially the last page. So set your time machine to January 30 2008.

Exclusive Boba Fett Tee
January 23, 2008 | 4:29 PM EST | Jayson

StarWarsShop.com has added an exclusive Boba Fett t-shirt from the UK.

UK Streetwear brand Addict has teamed up with Lucasfilm to produce exclusive boxed tees depicting three of the most iconic characters from the original Star Wars Trilogy!

Called the Icons Series, it’s a one-off set of officially licensed tees illustrated by artist Mitch, known by many for his work in the music industry — Amp Fiddler, Bugz in the Attic, Incognito, The Bees, and Howie B are just a few of the musicians he’s worked with.

As seen here, for the Star Wars Icons Series, the artist’s signature style accurately captures the essence of Boba Fett–not surprising, since the artist counts Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie among his earliest influences (see the artist profile below). And like fine art, the t-shirts come packaged in an illustrated custom box — no cheap metal hangers here.

Retails for $52 and ships March 08.

Also shown is the next figure in the series of RAH (Real Action Heroes) – the Phase I Clone Trooper

Jones The Spud
January 23, 2008 | 7:40 AM EST | Bill

USA Today has broken the story of Hasbro’s latest themed Spud– from Taters of the Lost Ark! Here’s their report:

On May 22, Indiana Jones returns to theaters with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, with Harrison Ford again reprising the title role. Perhaps upstaging the actor: a toy. On May 1, Mr. Potato Head: Taters of the Lost Ark hits stores, perhaps with a more versatile wardrobe. The toy spud comes with 12 mix-and-match parts inspired by the daredevil character, including a jacket, whip and fedora. Indiana Jones will probably arrive with a PG-13 rating, but Mr. Potato Head (about $15) has younger demos: ages 2 and up. Check it out here.

*Ratts Tyerell (TPM)
*various Mos Espa Aleena, Podrace fans and racer supporters (TPM)

Master Replicas Products Quickly Vanishing At Retail
January 16, 2008 | 8:35 PM EST | Bill

At below retail price, with free shipping in the US, they have already passed “endangered species status” and can literally be called “vanishing species”.

The The Saber Vault only has a few very cool FX Yoda, ANH Vader, and ANH Luke sabers left in stock. There’s also just 2 of the Qui Gon LE lightsabers left in stock, and they cannot get any more of ANY of these from MR. Remember at The Saber Vault their prices are always below the retail price, and include free shipping in the US! Click here to order.

Have You Seen The Manga Line… That Never Was
January 14, 2008 | 10:02 PM EST | Bill

Yep, if you enjoyed the Star Wars Manga– which has been reprinted several times by Dark Horse Comics– and you wondered what action figures based on that series would look like, and why they were never made, well we’ve run across an article on the web that you will find very interesting. In fact, Kenner looked at producing a line of SW manga figures, although it died on the drawing boards, our friends at POTF2 and Behind the Toys have posted an article on the line here.

4-inches.de has come up with a couple new Order 66 images. One of Obi-Wan Kenobi with Red ARC Trooper and Master Sev with Yellow ARC Trooper. Obi-Wan looks to be a repack of the 2003 Clone Wars sculpt with soft goods robe and Master Sev looks to have a new head* on a repainted Kit Fistobody. Head to the forums for a closer look.

*Anyone else think that the Sev head could be used for the other Jabba’s Palace Drummer Ak-Rev? ; )

Episode 125: I Didn’t Want A Wookiee For Christmas
January 14, 2008 | 9:15 AM EST | Jayson

There’s no feeling quite like driving home and seeing a box on your doorstep. Sometimes it’s apprehension (what will the wife think?), sometimes it’s confusion (oh boy, what shipped again?), and sometimes it’s unbridled excitement (IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE!). But imagine the crash from the “IT’S HERE!” high if you open a box expecting to finish off your 30th Anniversary Hasbro collection thanks to an order from HasbroToyShop.com and, instead, find a 3 year old Revenge of the Sith figure? Arnie vents about this very occurrance this week on Star Wars Action News.

Also this week, we are always looking for listener feedback as to what you’d like more of on the show and what we’ve heard is “more vintage.” This show marks our first in a new monthly segment where our own podcast enhancer Kevin (DarthGawth on the forums) reviews vintage figures as he begins the daunting task of assembling a vintage carded collection.

Finally this week, Lucasfilm issued a press release about what has happened to the Master Replicas license. Hasbro will be taking over the production of the Force F/X lightsabers and the other props are falling to a newcomer to Star Wars–EFX. Marjorie and Arnie give their take on this turn of events.

Thank you for listening.

You can download this week’s show from swactionnews.com, the standard version directly here and the enhanced version directly here.

January 13, 2008 | 8:40 PM EST | Bill

If the latest rumors at Mice Chat’s Forums are correct it looks like the Mouse will be bringing the mean green one, no NOT the hulk, think the introduction at Celebration 2 to the sneak preview of Episode 2’s footage, and a certain fight scene, to counter Universal’s alliance with Harry Potter.Check out the full post here.

EFX OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED; Hasbro To Produce FX Sabers
January 10, 2008 | 8:40 PM EST | Bill

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Star Wars fans and collectors will find new lines of collectibles from Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS) and newcomer eFX in 2008, it was announced today by Lucas Licensing, a division of Lucasfilm Ltd.

Hasbro, Lucas Licensing’s master Star Wars toy and game licensee, will assume the design and production of the high-end, collectible electronic lightsabers line, called “Force FX” Lightsabers, which was previously made by Master Replicas.

Hasbro’s Force FX lightsaber line will debut in the spring and continues the remarkable popularity of electronic replica lightsabers among Star Wars enthusiasts. The line will feature replicas of the iconic weapons used by Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Maul and Yoda.

Newly formed eFX will develop, manufacture and distribute collectible, limited-edition replicas of both full-sized and scaled props; studio- and reduced-scale vehicles and ships; full-sized helmets; and high-end, die-cast vehicles and ships that encompass the entire Star Wars universe.

“Working with both Hasbro and eFX allows us to bring Star Wars fans some of the best collectibles we have ever offered,” said Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing. “These are incredibly creative, innovative companies with a real passion for Star Wars, and we think it’s going to show in the products they offer.”

Hasbro expects the first Force FX lightsabers to be available in the spring, while eFX plans to unveil its first products at Comic Con International in San Diego in July.

Toyguide Update: #59 Destroyer Droid (Droideka)
January 9, 2008 | 11:06 AM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates continue with addition of the Droideka (Destroyer Droid), #59 in the TAC line. Here is a version of the Droideka I’ve personall wanted for a long time, but honestly it falls a bit short shearly because of the opaqueness of the deflector shield. Also, we are only give half of said shield thus necessitating the purchase of another Droideka. I sense a plot to part me with more of my money.

Head to the Toyguide to see all the images.

Toyguide Update: #58 Voolvif Monn (Jedi Master)
January 9, 2008 | 7:08 AM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates continue with addition of Voolvif Monn (Jedi Master), #58 in the TAC line. Another welcome addition to the ranks of the Jedi order, Voolvif Monn was selected by fans as part of a poll to determine which Jedi character should be introduced to Cartoon Network’s Clone Wars Animated series. Voolvif is an all new figure with a lot of articulation featuring ball-jointed shoulders, elbows, ankle and swivel wrists, waist & neck. But it lacks a joint in the knee area and the lower part of the robe limits the positioning of the legs. He also features a new lightsaber mold which added a little variety to the weaponry of The Order.

Head to the Toyguide to see all the images.

Toyguide Update: #57 Jango Fett (Bounty Hunter)
January 8, 2008 | 10:15 PM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates press on with the addition of Jango Fett (Bounty Hunter), #57 in the TAC line. This version of Jango is modeled after a cut scene from AOTC and is chock full of articulation and accessories. This figure has removable armor including helmet, shin guards, jetpack, chest/shoulder armor, belt/holster* and blasters. But unfortunately it doesn’t include the wrist gauntlets.

*NOTE: the belt/holster is removable but it has to be slipped down over the hips, legs and feet. The belt does NOT separate in the back as it appears.

Head to the Toyguide to see all the images.

Toyguide Update: #56 Padme Amidala (Naboo Senator)
January 8, 2008 | 9:39 PM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates continue with the addition of a long clamored for figure Padme Amidala (Naboo Senator), the 56th figure in the TAC line. It has been a long time coming now we finally have the “Fireside Padme” figure from AOTC we’ve wanted. Other than it not being lifesize and breathing, there is not much to improve upon as it continues in the vein of other ornante costumed Padme figures, but also adds the benefits of swivel wrists, ball-jointed elbows and shoulders. Did I mention that you can remove part of her dress?

Head to the Toyguide to see all the images.

Toyguide Update: #55 Clone Trooper (Training Fatigues)
January 8, 2008 | 8:33 PM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates continue with the addition of the Clone Trooper in Training Fatigues, the 55th figure in the TAC line. Kamino, we have a problem. Either someone forgot to add an ingredient to the clone-growing slurry or he’s hasn’t gone through his final growth spurt yet, this dressed down clone is a tad shorter than his armored brethren. Maybe they wear lifts in their boots. All kidding aside, this is a fairly solid figure with all the articulation you’d need for such a figure, but where this offering lacks is the snap-on armor. The included armor doesn’t complete the costume and the areas that are left exposed I would consider vital. : P In lieu of the armor, I think a repainted Clone Youth from the Saga era would have been much cooler.

Head to the Toyguide to see all the images.

Toyguide Update: #51 R2-B1 Astromech Droid
January 8, 2008 | 7:51 PM EST | Jayson

The Toyguide updates today after a brief hiatus (mostly do to the glut of product that had to be tracked down over the holidays) with the addition of R2-B1, the 51st figure in the TAC line. Here we are treated to an update of a figure from the tail end of the Episode I days. Back then, R2-B1was rather elusive and for some missed altogether. This version is a actually a repaint of the superior Sneak Preview R4-G9 sculpt from the ROTS line. The deco differs slightly in some areas, but the main departure is this new version foregoes the chrome dome for a less flashy molded gray dome. But like the previous version, it includes the “power harness” as seen in the main hold of Queen Amidala’s Starship.

Enough babble, head to the Toyguide to see all the images.

New Star Wars Props License Awarded?
January 7, 2008 | 7:43 PM EST | Bill

Star Wars fans who have a subscription to the insider were greated by an intersting teaser on the back cover from a company known as “efx”

Ok, it’s a nice image with a McQuarrie Vader theme, but what does it mean? Well the speculation around the net is that this is company which will be producing Star Wars prop replicas– note the date listed, happens to match up with San Diego Comicon. Our friends over at Rebelscum have posted a nice piece of detective work, which includes the name of a certain individual who is now front and center at efx, but was closely associated with the Star Wars line at Master Replicas. Check out the full story here.

Captain Rex…. Clone Wars?????
January 6, 2008 | 7:44 PM EST | Bill

As we reported earlier todat, our friends over at Rebelscum.com have updated with images of wave 2 of Hasbro’s 2008 basic figure line, as well as some of the Saga Legends figures coming to a store near you soon.

But, it gets interesting even more interesting as the blister of the upcoming Legends Pit Droids 2 pack has a sticker advertising a Clone Wars sneak previwe figure– presumably a mail-in– for CAPTAIN REX.

The question becomes is the name alone an homage to Star Tours, or is Lucasfilm making our favorite droid who is eternally completing his “first flight” a part of Star Wars cannon in the Clone Wars? Check out the image here.

This “yet-to-be-officially-recognized” Falcon reaches the $150 pricepoint in less than 12 parsecs. It is unknown at this time if this is retooling the previous mold with added features or if this is a totally new offering, rest assured this will be a site to behold at this year’s Toyfair or Comic-Con Conventions.
