Star Wars: Frames
June 26, 2008 | 11:24 PM EST | Jayson

Sideshow Collectibles has updated tonight with a teaser ad for a new product to be revealed soon. And after a bit of googling I found this product was revealed at BookExpo America in Los Angeles. Here are the details from Bullycomic’s Blog.

This is Star Wars: Frames, published by Insight Editions:
The ultimate limited edition, Star Wars: Frames brings together master filmmaker George Lucas’s personal shot-by-shot selections from all six legendary Star Wars films. Limited to 1,138 copies and showcased in a sumptuous deco-inspired wooden box, Star Wars: Frames contains six books, each corresponding to one of the movies in the Star Wars saga….all six books reside in the beautiful wood-inlaid box, which is adorned with two exclusive high-relief sculptures of Darth Vader and Yoda…

Holy cow. This thing’s big: 25.75 inches long, 12.25 inches wide, 13.5 inches tall. Each book is 44 inches across when opened. The weight of the whole shebang? A whoppin’ 210 pounds. It’d take a Jedi to levitate that thing!

Click the image above to see a larger image and to read the specs for yourself.

Episode 148: More Nice Things
June 24, 2008 | 6:19 AM EST | Jayson

This week, the Star Wars Action News hosts are seeing red. They’re red hopping mad, you might even say. Why? Because the new exclusive TIE Fighter “has got some red on ya” (to quote Shaun of the Dead). Yes, someone graffitied a big red garish Rebel symbol on the latest “big wing” TIE Fighter re-release, and they jacked up the price too, $53 at Entertainment Earth. Is this too much for the 4th release of this mold? Have we now got more TIE Fighters than the compliment of a Super Star Destroyer? Find out on this week’s show!

We also discuss this week how the new Wal Mart exclusive Droid Factory figures and Comic Book two packs are hitting shelves, with voice mail reports from listeners. We review the new collectible 10 volume hardcover Star Wars book collection from Dark Horse, and we discuss how we think Titan magazine’s business model is somewhat flawed, punishing the good customers and rewarding the disloyal.

With a UK segment, a Hasbro Q&A, and more, it’s all on this week’s Star Wars Action News!

More Medicom Morsels…
June 23, 2008 | 4:41 PM EST | Jayson

Medicom Toy has updated their site today with more Star Wars product as well as a new Indy item.

First up Pepsi “Nex” Be@rbricks
Smaller in scale (70%) than their full-sized brethren, these bear-ified bricks are available in Japan as part of the Pepsi “Nex” promotion. There are 16 pieces in all and the set is current available forpre-order at BBTS.

Next, Celebration Japan will be receiving its own Kubrick and be@rbrick exclusives: the Shadow Guard from the Force Unleashed and a Wicket and Paploo Set.

A few days ago we reported the release of new Clone Troopers from Medicom’s RAH 12″ line and it looks like the AOTC Clone Trooper Commander (Yellow Deco) will be a Celebration Japan exclusive as well.

Our favorite archeologists gets some Medicom love here as well with the VCD (Vinyl Collectible Dolls) Indiana Jones. It is limited to 2008 pieces and I assuming this will show up as an import at Sideshow Collectibles.

Wal-Mart Exclusives Found
June 17, 2008 | 6:36 PM EST | Justin2

You’re probably gearing up for all the new Star Wars items to be released on July 26, right?

Well, it might be worth your while to swing by your local Wal-Marts well before then, as the Wal-Mart Exclusive Droid Factory 2-pks and Comic Packs have been found!

Update: – Looks like R2 is based of the R2-G9 mold, complete with retractable leg when the dome is rotated… and while we don’t have a super articulated C-3PO yet, THIS proves that Hasbro can pull it off rather easily.

Previews Exclusives: Muggs and a TIE
June 16, 2008 | 2:42 PM EST | Jayson

No, not a late Father’s Day gift, these new Previews Exclusives from Hasbro just popped up on Big Bad Toy Store’s site. Read on for the skinny…

First up Admiral Ackbar and Shadow Trooper Mighty Muggs

Whether for play or display, this hip version of the Mon Calamari leader, Admiral Ackbar, is sure to bring a smile to the faces of collectors and fans alike! Sporting his usual off-white on white uniform, this funky version of the Alliance Fleet commander proudly flaunts his large character head and chunky body. The whimsical figure is decorated with Ackbar’s amphibious good looks – and is ready to take his rightful place as a must-have for your collection! And, just so the Empire doesn’t feel left out, the Shadow Trooper flexes in his black battle armor and matching blaster accessory – and is ready to take his rightful place as a must-have for your collection!

Next, the Droid Series Pirate Version TIE Fighter

Includes an exclusive Hobbie Klivian figure and Fighter Deco! These TIE Fighters were used by Biggs Darklighter and his mutineers to escape the Rand Ecliptic. Low on fuel, the group returned to the Ecliptic only to find it had been taken over by a Rebel cell led by Hobbie Klivian. The TIEs were then refitted with hyperdrives, astromech sockets, and ejection seats for a mission to steal X-Wings from Incom. Finally, in a bold statement of defiance, these formerly Imperial fighters were emblazoned with the Rebel Alliance symbol! Bigg’s pilots then ejected from the TIE Fighters – with the astromech droids piloting the ships on their own – a tactic that drew off Imperial TIE fighters on patrol around the system, allowing Darklighter and his team the proper distraction to gain entry to the Incom facility!

These are currently available for pre-order for $34.99 and $54.99 respectively and are expected to ship 3rd Quarter 2008.

Episode 147: Cracking the Whip
June 15, 2008 | 6:28 PM EST | Jayson

Still frothing at the mouth for new toys, the Star Wars Action News team gathered again this week to look at the upcoming July releases from Hasbro. After focusing on the vehicles last episode, this episode the group talks about the new figures of both The Legacy Collection and The Clone Wars toy lines. Which do the team want more, animated style or non? Will the animated figures sell to kid? And what is Hasbro trying to pull with sending e-mails saying figures won’t go on clearance, only to be found on clearance days later?

Also listen to find out where to get the 16th (and final?) Clone Wars character key (from the first Clone Wars animated series), and to hear Kevin review and discuss another vintage figure, one I’m sure vintage collectors will remember.

All this and more on this week’s Star Wars Action News.

Toyguide Update: Droid Factory Han Solo & R-3PO
June 12, 2008 | 9:15 AM EST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide updates today with addition of the third in the series of six Droid Factory sets: Han Solo and R-3PO. In this set, we are treated to a retool of the VTSC Han Solo from last year but this time we head a “hood up” version and in this instance the often debated “blue coat” version. (Fear not for you “brown coats” out there, he’ll be available version soon in the Legacy Hoth Recon Patrol Battle Pack).

R-3PO is a repaint of the TSC C-3PO with Ewok Throne figure, complete with leg articulation and removable arms and head. I can’t help but feel that the original R-3PO from the Saga Collection was a truer representation of that character from a sculpt and deco standpoint.

The set also include kicks off a new “gimmick” in the Star Wars figure line, the Build-A-Droid concept. When you complete your collection with the other sets in the Droid Factory assortment, you will be able to create a unique figure in this case C-3PX. These Wal-Mart Exclusive Droid Factory 2 Packs are slated for release next month although this set was available briefly on online through Wal-Mart.com. With all that said, head to the toyguide and see what you think.

Episode 147: The Barbie Dream House
June 9, 2008 | 9:56 PM EST | Jayson

July 26th is getting closer and closer (and to see how close check out all the nifty new countdown timers at swactionnews.com) and the excitement is palpable for new toys. None of the new toys has gotten the buzz as the new vehicles, and with Hasbro previewing the instruction sheets this past week even the buzz has buzz. The Star Wars Action News staff convenes for their first roundtable discussion of the season to discuss these upcoming vehicles, and will return next week with another roundtable to discuss the figures.

We also have a call from Rusty in Orlando updating us to the Star Wars Weekends fun at Disney, and talk about how you can own an actual piece of the Captain Rex prop from the Star Tours ride.

With a review of the Hoth Patrol TRU Battle Pack, discussion on where to find all the shadow-y Saga Legends figures, and Star Wars fun in general, it’s Star Wars Action News.

Legacy Waves 1 & 2 Numbering Details
June 7, 2008 | 8:28 AM EST | Jayson

Time to update those checklists, spreadsheets and wishlists. After looking at the recently revealed carded shots that have started to hit and it appears that we gets some answers to the numbering sequence for the first 2 waves of the Legacy Collection. It shows that each number begins with a BD designation (for Build-A-Droid I assume) followed by the number in the wave/assortment.

– BD3: Chewbacca
– BD4: Leektar & Nippet
– BD5: Ak-rev

B.A.D. Details
June 6, 2008 | 7:30 PM EST | Jayson

Our friends at POTF2.com have posted a backside carded shot of the Battle Damaged Vader repack from the Legacy line and it reveals that the B.A.D. (Build-A-Droid) pieces are packed in a similar fashion to the Holo figures from the TSC line. It also reveals that the sculpt for this B.A.D. astromech (R4-D6) has the removable middle leg like the Early Bird/TSC R2-D2 and R5-D4 figures.

Head on over for a look.

Note: This figure also has the designation of “GH 3” which sounds like this figure is the third in a series of “Greatest Hits” figures.

Yakface/Hasbro QnA: Session #51
June 6, 2008 | 4:28 PM EST | Jayson

Hasbro has sent back answers to the latest round of submitted questions. Enjoy!

Q1: Dear Hasbro, there are pics of the new Droid Factory figures floating about and I noticed that Luke’s face is now a “must less expressive” version – essentially a straight repack / redeco of the Vintage X-Wlng Pilot sculpt.

Can you confirm or deny that we are in fact getting this version versus the “smiley” Luke shown in the Droid Factory initial solicitation imagery?

Also Luke is shown having the wrong Lightsaber accessories will this common factory error be addressed.

A1: The smiley version was removed at Lucasfilm’s request and changed back to the vintage version. The lightsabers are the same as the Vintage release, including, unfortunately, the same lack of black paint deco on the emitter on the lit version (the factory took our earlier reference and ran with it for this one, and we missed it). The unlit hilt is great though.

*Note to Hasbro: The unlit hilt is still the WRONG VERSION – it’s Vader’s.

=================================================

Q2: Dear Hasbro – Imagery of the Legacy “Legends” Wave has shown up online and the pack in accessory shows “Clone Gear” lockers. What is the breakdown of the “gear” – Rifles? Blasters? Pistols? Armor? Binoculars?

A2: They are all blasters, taken from the Battlefront II Clone trooper figure packs. Not all of the blasters will be included, but some very basic and very cool ones will be included.

=================================================

Q3: Has the packaging been finalized for the SDCC exclusive “Disturbance in the Force” set yet? If so, think we could get a teaser image? Wink-wink, nudge-nudge.

A3: Yes, yes it has.

Thanks Hasbro! Here is a link to a larger version of the above image.

Episode 145: We’ve Got Jungle Fever
June 5, 2008 | 9:52 AM EST | Jayson

Over at Amazon.com’s Target store the Jungle Rancor (which is called the Battle Rancor on the box) is still in stock. Star Wars Action News ordered some and they were delivered this week. Will there be a rumble in the Felucian jungle, or are these battle-painted beasties best left on store shelves? We review the Rancor and his rider this week.

Also this week, items are starting to show up in the new Clone Wars packing. Star Wars Action News staff member Kevin has found some at his local Target and he calls in with a report and some photos!

With Scott From Tulsa reminding you of all the upcoming pre-orders, Nathan P. Butler answering the age-old question “Where do I start reading the EU?”, Steve updating us on collecting in the UK, and a tribute to Harvey Korman, you’ll find it all on this week’s Star Wars Action News.

You can download this week’s show here or use the direct links:

LOTF: Invincible Review- Update
June 4, 2008 | 3:27 AM EST | Holocron_Master_Nick

Let me first say that for those who have been patient, I thank you.
For those who have been impatient, I apologize. I’m nearly done with the book as well as the review so hold tight …it’s not like I was out seeing any movies, “Koff” Iron Man Rocks “Coff” or Indy and the Kingdom of the Crystal Crap, umm, sorry that’s Skull.
So I am nearing the end and I can already say with certainty that if this book had been a movie, it would have been rated “R”. I haven’t seen this much suspense in a Star Wars novel and I still have no idea which way things are gonna swing. There’s plenty of “in your face”, brutal battles. Space, ground, zero-g, it is so scary I’ve wet my pants …oh, wait a minute that was actually when I saw the gas prices today …and a second time when Indy IV ended …STUPID “McGuffin”.
Okay, let’s just say I’m scared for the characters of the Star Wars EU and we’ll leave it at that …for now.
