UK Stormtrooper Armor Copyright Case Goes To Lucas… Sort Of
July 31, 2008 | 8:34 PM CST | Bill

Most prop replica collectors have heard of the ongoing battle between Lucasfilm and a UK company, whose owner designed some of the original Stormtrooper armor for A New Hope. United Kingdom courts have ruled in favor of Lucas on the issue of liabliity (whether the UK company did violate Lucas’ copyrights), but they refused to enforce Lucas’ 20 million dollar judgement which was obtained previously in American courts. The damages still have to be set by UK courts. Check out the full story on Yahoo here.

July 31, 2008 | 8:27 PM CST | Bill

Here’s the newest highlights from The Big Bad Toy Store.com

Just Arrived:
ARTFX TIE FIGHTER PILOT STATUE
This TIE Fighter Pilot statue stands 11.25″ tall, and shows him in an action pose, all ready to blast whatever rebel is in front of him. This sculpt draws attention to the detail in the costume, from the respirator machine on his chest to the massive space helmet. This snap-fit model kit also comes with a Mouse Droid piece, so the Pilot can have something to talk to, or for target practice.

Preorders:

GENERAL GRIEVOUS 1:1 SCALE BUST
This gigantic life-sized bust of General Grievous stands 23″ tall, and is hand-crafted and hand-painted. Set to ship this holiday season, this piece would make a great centerpiece of any Star Wars collection — get this great-yet-evil piece ordered today!

NEW VCDS – DARTH MAUL, JAWA (REALISTIC)
Two new VCDs from Medicom’s Star Wars line have been announced. For those who are enjoying the super-deformed style of the VCDs so far comes Darth Maul, complete with his double-bladed lightsaber, while those looking for a more realistic style will want to check out the new Jawa VCD. These are priced at $66.99 and $74.99 respectively.

REAL ACTION HEROES HAN SOLO
Medicom’s newest RAH Star Wars figure is Han Solo, the scruffy pirate from the original trilogy. Clad in his usual black vest and pants with white shirt, Han also comes with his blaster and its harness and holster.

TUSKEN RAIDER PREMIUM FORMAT STATUE
This 1:4 scale rendition of one of the humanoids living in the Jundland Wastes of Tatooine is 24″ tall, and cast in polystone. The ifgure is dressed in a reproduction of the original costume, and hand-painted and numbered. This Tusken Raider is standing with his Gaderffii stick raised in a threatening pose, and will make a great addition to any Star Wars collection when it ships early next year. Click here for all the newest instock and pre-order items.

Toyguide Update: TCW No. 8 R2-D2 (FDOI)
July 31, 2008 | 10:23 AM CST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide gets an update today with the addition of R2-D2 to our new Clone Wars section. R2 gets the animated treatment here and boy is it great! This figure combines some of the best features of previously released R2s along with the inclusion of some new goodies that I hope make their way to future non-animated releases. One of the most welcome features is the fact that the sensorscope can be raised and lowered without the need to ratchet the head around, which I think is rather limiting from a displayability standpoint on realistic style sculpts. The rotating dome feature here retracts the rope that deploys from R2’s back panel. R2 also includes removable rocket boosters and 2 working panels that hide his signature scomplink and manipulator arm. Finally, R2 has a removable middle leg (similar to the VOTC sculpts) and each leg has a set of rolling wheels for added playability.

Overall, this is an outstanding figure and while the translation of the animated character to the 3-3/4″ scale might be a poo-pood by some collectors, those who’ve committed to picking up this line are in for a real treat.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is a figure you think is worth adding to your collection.

The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia
July 30, 2008 | 7:42 PM CST | Jayson

StarWarsShop.com has updated their New Arrivals section tonight with the addition of a pre-order for The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia . Abundantly illustrated with full-color artwork and photos, and now in a new two-volume edition to accommodate its millennia-spanning wealth of detailed entries, the Star Wars Encyclopedia encompasses the full measure of George Lucas’s extraordinary creation. Thirty years of information on all things Star Wars — ranging from science and technology to history and geography, culture and biography to ecology and cosmology, with comprehensive entries from “abo” and “Abrax” to “Zirtran’s Anchor” and “zwil”–has been supplemented with another entire decade’s worth of all-new material.

And because several of the authors currently share Lucasfilm’s Presidio campus with StarWarsShop, customers purchasing Star Wars Encyclopedia online through SWShop will receive an exclusive signed edition by all six authors!

Toyguide Update: TCW No. 1 Anakin Skywalker
July 29, 2008 | 12:51 PM CST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide gets an update today with the addition of Anakin Skywalker, the first figure added to our new Clone Wars section. The Clone Wars continue and so has the debate on the aesthetics of the figures in the Clone Wars line of figures. Some people love them, others… not so much. What we do have here is a faithful representation of the source material, with the slim lines and angular features. The Anakin figure includes a fair amount of articulation above the waist with ball-joint elbows, neck and shoulders and a swivel waist and forearms. But once you drop below the belt, the body becomes very limited with only hip articulation.

As for accessories, he includes his proper lightsaber along with a “firing force-blast” launcher which is thankfully an optional attachment. He also include a zipline rope with handles on either end – a “Jedi Jump Rope” of sorts, its exact use probably to be made clear in the upcoming movie/series.

Overall it’s a decent figure from a sculpt, detail and accessory standpoint, but it does take a hit in the articulation department. I think it should be mandatory that any/all force users have all points of articulation for optimal play value because anything less would be uncivilized.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is a figure you think is worth adding to your collection.

Packaging Change on The Legacy Collection
July 29, 2008 | 8:59 AM CST | Jayson

The folks at Galactic Hunter have posted high-res images of Legacy Waves 3 & 4 which were previewed over the weekend at Comic-Con. What is interesting is that the card backer appears to be transitioning to a sightly different style by adding a bit more color in the form of blue lens on the stormtrooper artwork. Will there be variants of figures on both card backs? Too early to tell, but we’ll surely have to keep our lens peeled.

Episode 152: Cons Near and Far Far East
July 22, 2008 | 5:59 PM CST | Jayson

What an exhausting time for Star Wars fans and Collectors. Never one to let us sleep, Lucasfilm has Star Wars Celebration: Japan the weekend before San Diego Comic Con. Celebration Japan is likely the biggest Star Wars party in the world for 2008 and Star Wars Action News’ Larry is there to cover it. Mark Hammil signing, exclusive items, and new items being shown for the first time. It’s a tremendous time to be a Star Wars fan in Japan, whether you live there or are just visiting.

Then we have San Diego Comic Con which Steve Sansweet promised would be a spectacular party for Star Wars fans. Marjorie, Arnie, and several other Star Wars Action News staff are going to be covering the event in great detail over the next week, starting with our exclusive Premiere Night coverage coming to you right as the doors open 7 p.m. PST. But this week we run down what is coming up at SDCC–the exclusives, the panels, and all the excitement that is to be had.

With a couple international voice mails and a review of the first Coruscant Nights novel, listen to this episode of Star Wars Action News–possibly on your way to San Diego!

And if you are going to this year’s San Diego Comic Con we’ll not only have a Star Wars Action News dinner but also a line party at Mission Bay! Dinner will be at 8 p.m. at Tio Leo, a Mexican restaurant. There are several in the area, we will be going to the one at 5302 Nappa Street in San Diego (it’s near Mission Bay, so close to the TRU). Then between 10 and 10:30 we will head to the Toys R Us at Mission Bay to join the line and have some fun and trivia! There’s a chance that you may be able to carpool with someone from the con to dinner or dinner to TRU, but car capacity may be limited. Toyguide Update: TLC No. 4 Leektar and Nippet (FDOI)
July 21, 2008 | 7:30 AM CST | Jayson

The Yakface Toyguide gets and update today with the addition of Leektar and Nippet, the first figure(s) added to our new Legacy/Clone Wars section and this figure happens to be a FDOI (1st Day of Issue) as well. I was lucky enough to con this figure out of my local Walmart before the retail police got to it. This Ewok figure set is right on par with previous Ewok releases from a quality of articulation and accessory standpoint. Leektar has ball-jointed shoulders and ankles, a swivel waist and neck and several accessories like a primitive club (perfect for whacking a meal or an Imperial), a knife with working holster and removable headdress. But that’s not all, for a long time, Ewok fans have wanted a wokling in plastic form and we finally get one. Nippet the Wokling has no articulation, but can be removed from its basket accessory for “added play value”. Also, the TLC line continues the Bulid-A-Droid concept that the Droid Factory sets started, and here we get the body of the astromech R4-D6.

Head to the toyguide to see if this is a figure you think is worth picking up this weekend.

Legacy Wave 4 “ROTS” Details
July 15, 2008 | 8:42 PM CST | Jayson

Yak Forum Member Rune Haako has come through today finding some source code for the yet to be “officially” revealed fourth wave in the Legacy line. Here are the character descriptions scrubbed from the source pages:

Commander Faie
Faie has received specialized training from ARC trooper Alpha, equipping him with the necessary skills to lead an elite battalion during the Clone Wars. He is part of task forces sent to Saleucami and Kashyyyk under the command of Jedi General Quinlan Vos.

General Grievous
A cyborg composed of melded metal and flesh, Grievous is one of the most chillingly effective military leaders in the Separatist’s army. He is a powerful and frightening presence in battle, exhibiting strategic ingenuity and flawless cunning.

Bail Organa
A member of the Galactic Senate, Organa is also First Chairman and Viceroy of Alderaan. When Anakin falls to the dark side and Padmé dies in childbirth, Bail and his wife Breha adopt one of the twins, Leia, to raise as their own daughter.

Breha Organa
Queen Breha Organa is Alderaan’s Minister of Education and the wife of Senator Bail Organa. Having longed for a child of her own for many years, Breha eagerly accepts one of Padmé’s motherless twins and adopts her as the daughter she always dreamed of having.

FX-6
FX-6 is one of the medical droids that assist in the reconstruction of Darth Vader after the Sith Lord’s devastating duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar. The droid has multiple arms equipped with a variety of medical and diagnostic tools.

Clone Trooper 327th Star Corps
The clone troopers in the 327th Star Corps are led by Clone Commander Bly and serve with Jedi General Aayla Secura on several planets in the Outer Rim Territories. This elite corps is distinguished by the yellow markings on their armor.

Stass Allie
A skilled warrior, political advisor and healer, Stass Allie serves on the Jedi Council after her cousin and former master, Adi Gallia, is killed by General Grievous. She is leading a mop-up operation on the planet of Saleucami when Order 66 is issued.

Thanks Rune! We’re sure to see the ROTS themed wave in a couple weeks at SDCC, but until then, head to our forums to weigh in with your thoughts.

Episode 151: The Hunt for the Great White Cards
July 15, 2008 | 8:03 AM CST | Jayson

This week’s episode of Star Wars Action News is like Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick. Only instead of Ahab it’s Arnie. And instead of being really really long it’s only about an hour. And instead of a great white whale it’s an even bigger treasure: white carded figures that have slipped out before release date. Marjorie and Arnie take you on a tour of stores trying to find employees who blithely disregard street dates in the name of efficiency. And we play voicemails from at least one listener who DID capture his great white toy. Where did he get it, and how did he get out without the dreaded sign of “Sale Not Allowed”? Listen to find out!

Also this week, we have a hands-on review of the very high-end collectible Yoshitoku Vader, initially offered up for order at Celebration Japan. This is an item few will own, but listen to our podcast to find out what makes this such an incredible piece.

With Scott from Tulsa and Nathan from the EU, its another great episode of Star Wars Action News as we ramp up for ComicCon!

And if you’re going to San Diego Comic Con don’t forget, Friday, July 25th at 8 p.m. will be the Star Wars Action News dinner, and starting between 10 and 10:30 we’ll be joining the line at the Mission Bay Toys R Us for the line party! RSVPs for the dinner aren’t required, but they are requested so we can tell the restaurant how many people we expect. You can e-mail us at show@reviewstarwars.comto let us know you’re coming, or PM arniec in the Star Wars Action News forums. Stay tuned to swactionnews.com for location information.

AT-TE… Found and Purchased!
July 13, 2008 | 7:58 PM CST | Justin2

While we’ve had reports of Wal-Marts sticking to the street date of July 26 for the new Clone Wars and Legacy items, Yakface reader Gary just sent us an image of his impressive score at his local Wal-Mart!

After realizing the street date, his local store pulled the display off their sales floor, but not before he was able to pick up this most impressive Republic war machine.

More Legacy Leaks
July 13, 2008 | 6:16 PM CST | Jayson

Yak Reader Chad writes in with his latest Legacy finding:

Alert!!! I was at the Wal-Mart in Hartselle, Alabama this morning and stumbled over a case of the Legacy wave 2. I had the Quad cannon trooper and the Scuba Trooper in my hands. As usual, the street date police was at the register and the figures scanned as “no sale allowed”. So, it looks like I will be waiting ’til the 26th to get my stuff. Keep your eyes open for these. They are showing up earlier then expected.

Thanks for the report Chad. Despite the moratorium on selling or placing these new items on the floor before 7/26, Wal-Mart seems to be lead retailer disgarding the street date for them.

UPDATE – Staff member CHEWIE experienced a similar situation at a St. Louis area Wal-Mart today regarding the mid-sized vehicles and the BMF.

There Is Another..
July 13, 2008 | 6:14 PM CST | Bill

Hallmark Ornament– It’s a limited edition, like the Tusken Raider last year– this time around it’s the Emperor’s Royal Guard figure. NOTE: It’s not in the “dreambooks” so you may have to ask for it. Thanks to Yak Reader Rick for the information.

More books to come …
July 10, 2008 | 1:07 PM CST | Holocron_Master_Nick

Well if you’ve finished the Legacy of the Force series than you probably already know that a book titled Millennium Falcon will continue after the events of Invincible with the Solos and their “new kid” on a grand adventure. I’m guessing this will be a bit more lighthearted and adventerous. Look for it Oct. 21 ’08, by James Luceno. Also this month is the release of Clone Wars by Karen Traviss, which I believe is different than her Republic Commando.

You can see the info here. Plus be on the lookout in August for a DK release of the Ultimate Blueprint book for Star Wars vehicles and such. That should be out Aug. 04 ’08 and be about $19.99. You can find info on the same link as above just do a search for the title.

Now I know everyone is going Clone Wars nuts and I too have been affected by the early put out of toys by a nameless “Ahem Cough Wal-Cough, ACk Mart, hack hack” retailer and they will be fined for it because both me and a buddy were very much upset and wasted gas, money and time. Half these places don’t know what the heck they are doing or can’t read a box, but I feel if it’s out there than it’s free game. Well see you all on Saturday night outside some TRU and look for my review of theJedi Twilight book soon, it’s starting off a bit slow, but I’m hanging in there. I’m sure it’ll pick-up! Bye and remember same Yakface website, same Yakface time …

Anakin Skywalker Mini Bust $55 each
Anakin Skywalker slowly turns to the dark side. As seen in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Anakin gives into his anger and savagely ends Count Dooku’s life at Palpatine’s command. Debuting at 2008 San Diego Comic Con; this highly detailed mini bust measures approximately 6.5 inches tall and captures the evil that seethes below the surface as Anakin readies himself to strike the deadly blow!

Scout Trooper on Speeder Bike Kustomz (Camo Variant) $70 each
In keeping with the ‘car culture’ style of Gentle Giant’s Star Wars Kustomz line; we bring the collectors a nostalgic variation of the Scout Trooper on Speeder Bike. This Scout trooper is wearing khaki-green gloves and sporting a Kustomz camouflage speeder bike accented with a classic shark ‘Fighter Plane Nose Art’ as he proudly waves a yellow flag with the peace symbol.

Legacy Finds in Cali
July 8, 2008 | 5:54 AM CST | Jayson

Yak Reader Ryan writes in with his early Legacy finds/denials at a couple locations in California, read on for his story.

Just wanted to pass along that at 2 different Walmarts, Redlands, CA and San Bernardino, CA, I’ve found some Legacy figures put out early, but was prevented from buying them. Each time the message to the cashier was “Sale not allowed”. It would appear Walmart is being strict on the 7/26 release date.

By the way, the figures I came across were the new Evolutions sets: Padme, Rebel Pilots and the repackaged Fetts and Sith Legacy at the Redlands, CA store. And at the San Bernardino, CA store- the former Target exclusive Galactic Heroes Cinema scenes of Jabbas’ Palace and the Luke/Biggs X-wing sets !?! I don’t remember reading about those being re-released.

Thanks for the info Ryan!

Episode 150: eFX-tive
July 8, 2008 | 5:18 AM CST | Jayson

Tuesday July 8th marks a new era for Star Wars collectibles as 500 Star Wars fans will be able to purchase the first product from eFX Collectibles-the retouched version of Master Replicas’ Stormtrooper Helmet. The mold is the same, the grill is a little cleaned up, and the base is totally different. Star Wars Action News has a hands on review of this product so you can make your final decision to whip out that credit card.

Plus have you ever wished to have a vintage mint-on-card collection? If you’ve ever looked on eBay or at your local convention for vintage carded figures every so often you are faced with the question-is that a fake? Our vintage expert Kevin takes a look at professionally recarded vintage figures to give you the lowdown on this niche, sometimes mistakenly bought, collectible.

Also this week we have plenty of news, from a review of the Wizard World con, a high-end item over 50% off hidden in the back of Toys R Us, discuss all the old items hanging out on the pegs and the few street-date breaking leaks of new toys. We preview the upcoming BIG BOOK Star Wars Frames, and run down the latest announcements from Sideshow Collectibles. With Steve updating us with his latest UK report, a slew of listener voicemails, and more; it’s on this week’s Star Wars Action News!

And for those of you going to San Diego Comic Con we announce our plans on this episode for our Star Wars Action News dinner 8 p.m. in San Diego, followed by a SWAN line party at the Toys R Us in Mission Bay. Stay tuned for more details about dinner locations and how to RSVP.
