Toyguide Update: Deluxe Republic Assault Submarine w/Scuba Clone Trooper

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the next addition for the 2012 “Darth Maul” product line. We continue with the Class I/Deluxe Republic Assault Submarine with Scuba Clone Trooper set from The Clone Wars sub-line.

PROS: Hasbro was on-the-ball in getting this particular vehicle/figure combo to market as from the outset, fans of the series wanted  it after Season 4’s debut story arc. The sub itself is loaded with fun features that make “playtime” actually fun. Lots of accessories for added value. The Red Five markings on the sub are a nice touch I think. The figure is highly articulated (13 POA) which is becoming more of an exception than the rule these days. The helmet sculpt (with the gear removed) has a cool McQuarrie Concept Art Boba Fett vibe that like.

CONS: The deco on the clone trooper itself leaves a lot of room for improvement as there are areas of overspray/bleeding that should be addressed. There is no display stand included that might facilitate posing the vehicle/figure combo in an underwater-scenario.

Toyguide Update: Attack Recon Fighter w/Anakin Skywalker

The Yakface Toyguide updates resume today with the next addition for the 2012 “Darth Maul” product line. We continue with the Class I/Deluxe Attack Recon Fighter with Anakin Skywalker set from The Clone Wars sub-line.

PROS: After being delayed for over a year, the Recon Fighter finally makes its way to retail albeit in a different deco and with a different/better pack-in figure. The 2011 Anakin figure gets an update with additional soft goods, a new left arm (remedying the prior useless “force-wielding” one), a new belt and new pilot-specific head sculpt. The fighter itself is a great toy despite it not really doing much, but Vintage mini-rig fans will instantly get a sense of nostalgia when playing with it.

CONS: The accessories are light for this set considering the pricepoint of about $20. Some launching projectiles or deployable bombs would have been an easy fix.
