Hasbro and Lucasfilm Ltd donate $100,000 to Benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation®

PAWTUCKET, R.I.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Hasbro, Inc. and Lucasfilm Ltd. announce the creation of a limited-edition Star Wars action figure to honor Katie Johnson, a very special Star Wars fan who tragically passed away from brain cancer in 2005 at the age of seven. In conjunction with this figure, Hasbro and Lucasfilm will help make more wishes come true for children like Katie by donating $100,000 in her memory to the Make-A-Wish Foundations of South Carolina and San Diego. Hasbro’s R2-KT droid figure will be available at San Diego Comic-Con International July 25-29 at the booths of Hasbro and StarWarsShop with a small inventory also being offered for sale online through HasbroToyShop.com and StarWarsShop.com following the event.

The Star Wars saga has always been near to the heart of the Johnson family–in fact, Katie’s father, Albin Johnson, is the founder of the 501st Legion, a Star Wars costuming fan club that performs charity work around the world. So it’s not too surprising that Katie’s sister Allie wished her sister had an “Artoo” droid to look after her while she underwent her cancer treatment–just like R2-D2 cared for Padmé in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.

In 2005, the R2-D2 Builders club—a fan group—created for Katie a life-size astromech droid named R2-KT (named “KT” after Katie) modeled after the iconic R2-D2 character in the Star Wars films. Hasbro, the maker of Star Wars action figures, and Lucasfilm both recognized the uniqueness and special story this heartfelt tribute represented and decided to go forward with a special edition 3-3/4” R2-KT figure in Katie’s honor as a way to allow all fans to learn about and participate in Katie’s continuing legacy.

“Katie’s story touched us all, and we are very proud to be involved in a project that will help raise awareness for the Make-A-Wish Foundation so many more wishes may be granted to children like Katie,” said Derryl DePriest, marketing director for Star Wars toys at Hasbro.

“The Make-A-Wish Foundation has long been a favorite charity of the 501st and Lucasfilm, and they granted Katie a fantastic wish before she died,” said Derek Stothard, Lucasfilm’s director of toys. “So we are especially proud to be associated with Hasbro in this great endeavor.”

Episode 98: In the Year 2000

In 2000 I think all Star Wars fans had a bit of a Star Wars hangover. We felt sick from all the Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and KFC we’d ingested, and we were seeing $0.99 Darth Maul figures on store shelves. Star Wars hoopla from the year before had burned out quickly, and while we were looking forward to Episode II it was many years away and details were few. Still, in that time Star Wars collecting continued with a new figure line, a few new video games, and some new books. This week Marjorie & Arnie look back to Y2K and remember fondly an item released that year.

Also this week, Scott reviews two pieces of Gentle Giant exclusive goodness–the Commander Gree mini-bust and the Yoda/R2 maquette. Both are big bucks after-market, and the Yoda/R2 goes up for San Diego attendee orders this week…are they worth it?

VTAC Clearances

Some Target stores have begun marking down their VTAC figures a bit, looks like at this point most stores are at a 30% price cut from their $11.99 price point. If anyone has found them cheaper yet, be sure to send those reports in!

Update – several more reports have come in with collectors finding these marked at $8.38, and even a sighting of them at the Merle Hay Mall Target in Des Moines, Iowa at for just $5.98 each.

With there supposedly being an upcoming revision to these cases packed with 6 Snowtroopers per case, army builders may be able to add to their Imperial ranks for a fair price later this summer…

Also in the midst of your festivities, perhaps take the time to remember what this day really means. Most people in the United States celebrate this holiday, but do you know exactly why Independence Day is so important to our country?

To be independent means to take care of yourself, making your own rules and providing for your own needs. Which is what people in our country’s history gave their lives for. They wanted us to be able to capitalize on the gift of freedom; and achieve the goals we should always be working for, and about the people who fought so hard to make these ideas possible.

So this 4th of July, please take a moment and remember to thank all of the efforts and lives that were devoted to make our country what it is today; and to honor the courage it took for our ancestors to stand up for what they knew was right, regardless of their fears.

The Toyguide updates today with the addition of the Battle Droids 2-pack in the Saga Legends line. One of four planned variants to the Battle Droids is featured here, this set includes your standard issue Battle Droid and a Battle Droid Commander that at first glance looks like OOM-9, but this version doesn’t have the smaller antenna accessory. The sculpt used for both Battle Droids is the one from the Saga C-3PO with Droid Factory Assembly Line Deluxe Set. Do yourself a favor and get some display bases for these two as their legs are extremely rubbery and pliable. And for those keeping track, this set includes the Episode I: The Phantom Menace movie coin.

The Toyguide updates continue today with the addition of the ROTS Clone Trooper in the Saga Legends line. While at first glance this figure might seem to be a straight repack – it isn’t. This version sports a minty fresh, non-battle damaged deco. Although an all-white EIII Clone never made an official appearance on screen, this is probably what they looked like before heading down to the Republic paint booth for those unit specific accents : P

It’s been a while since the all white version has graced the pegs and it’s a welcomed return for me as I rarely saw these when they originally hit back in the Clone Wars days. This EU set treats us 2 semi new figures: a kitbashed Obi-Wan based on the often-released “Pilot” sculpt and a nice SA ARC Trooper. The Obi-Wan includes an alternate “Sith Mask” head and the ARC Trooper features a removable helmet although it has a non-movable rangefinder. : (

The Toyguide updates today with the addition of the Quinlan Vos and Vilmarh Grahrk Comic Pack. This EU set giveth us 2 new figures the amnesiatic Jedi Quinlan Vos and the Devonarian thug Vilmarh “Villie” Grahrk. Everything from the waist up on these two are really pretty good but they lack any significant leg, knee or ankle articulation which pretty much necessitates the use of a base/figure stand (especially for Vos) to display them in any sort of dramatic pose.

UPDATE: Kashyyyk AT-RT Patrol Twin Pack

There is an new item showing up in overseas online store listings. It’s a battle pack of sorts dubbed “Kashyyyk AT-RT Patrol Twin Pack”. This new battle pack features two AT-RT’s (All Terrain Recon Transport) with three Kashyyyk troopers. This will probably be packaged similarly to the Treachery on Saleucami Battle Pack. No photos have surfaced yet, but we’ll post it when it surfaces. It is scheduled for release 7/31/07 for $29.99

UPDATE: This set was part of the Target DCPI list (#087-06-0343 – AT-RT Assault Squad) that was making the rounds back in early May. It is rumored to be shown at next month’s SDCC. Thanks to my pal Jeff from JediDefender for the reminder and additional info.

The Misadventures of McQuarrie Luke Skywalker

As you’ve probably heard, recent orders placed with HasbroToyShop.com for the the CIV McQuarrie Luke have triggered many problems. The latest issue is that emails are being sent out that ALL ORDERS have been canceled – even those orders that were confirmed by calling Hasbro Customer Service line (1-800-408-0052) by the June 9 deadline. I received the cancellation email (after I confirmed my purchase last week) but my Credit Card was charged yesterday for my order. Obviously, your situation may vary, but I suggest calling the Hasbro CS number and re-confirm the status of your order. The saga continues…

Legacy of the Force Sacrifice Reviewed

OK, it’s been a little over a week since the latest installment of the 9 novel Legacy of the Force Series hit shelves, so it’s time to bring a relatively spoiler free review of the book. Sacrifice marks the half-way point in the Legacy of the Force Series. Karen Traviss’ writing style continues to sync perfectly with Allston and Denning. The approach of having three authors who are already very comfortable in the Star Wars Universe trading off writing duties throgh the course of the series is working extremely well. They styles mesh so that on picking up this novel, you are already emmersed back into the the Post New Jedi Order world, right where Exile left off.

This novel focuses around Jacen’s evolution into a Dark Lord, and really has a much smaller cast of characters than the Dramatis Personae would suggest. In fact, the action really centers on Jacen, Ben Skywalker, Mara, Luke, Boba Fett and a few Mandaloreans, with what could best be described as cameos by Jaina, Cal Omas, Leia, Han and others. Many of these Cameos are almost completely “off-screen”, and are mentioned in the context of a comlink communication.

Traviss brings us deeper into the world and mindset of the Mando, as she started in her Repulic Commando series, and as such Boba Fett fans will want to read this novel for that reason alone. There is also an extremely well written subplot focused on Fett’s latest challenge (the one you read about in Exile and before), which is coming to a climax, as well as how Mandaloran society functions. She even brings back a now very old Mandalorean’s best friend from the Repulic Commando series. Oh, and there’s a major homage to a certain scene in the Empire Strikes Back involving Boba Fett which lays the groundwork for us to see another whole side of Fett in the future. This is completely in addition to the new Boba Fett, Statesman which surfaces in Mandalore.

In keeping the review relatively spoiler free we won’t tell you Jacen’s new Sith name (which was announced on Star Wars.com to be revealed in this novel), however it is revealed on the last page of the book. In addition, Traviss does an outstanding job of keeping both the reader and even Jacen guessing as to who and what his sacrifice will be. In true Sith fashion, even once the act is done, its meaning is not readily apparent, and Jacen’s final insight into its meaning will have very profound implications for the long term future of the Star Wars Universe.

This was an excellent novel, and I highly recommend it.

Star Wars Muppet Action Figures

MuppetCentral.com is reporting that Star Wars Muppet Action Figures are in development. The planned figures include Beaker as C-3PO, Fozzie Bear as Chewbacca, Miss Piggy as Princess Leia, Kermit the Frog as Luke Skywalker, Gonzo the Great as Darth Vader (or Dearth Nadir as known in the Muppet-universe). All six figures will be released as a boxed set and is scheduled for release later this year. The product will be sold exclusively at the Disney Theme parks’ gift shops (the shops tied to the Star Tours theme ride). They may also become available through online retailers as well.

Update To Disney’s Star Tours Coming

It seems that the long rumored update to Disney’s Star Tours ride may finally be in the works. We’ve seen two reports on Screamscape and WDW Magic’s Forums which contain quotes from Anthony Daniels saying he just finished taping digital footage for the Star Tours update. Luke Skywalker Yavin Ceremony Saber Variant

Reports around the web are that a “corrected” version of the Yavin Ceremony Luke is starting to hit retail. While I have yet to see this “correction” personally, I have seen the photos, and the correction is purely cosmetic. What Hasbro’s paint shop has done is omitted the black accent on the band and the emitter portions on the sculpt of the Vader lightsaber hilt. So, what we are left with is essentially an Episode II version of Anakin’s Saber NOT the correct Anakin EIII/Luke EIV saber hilt.

This “corrected” hilt is also the one that is currently shipping on the belt of the #18 Luke Skywalker (Moisture Farmer) from Wave 3.

While these type of errors don’t matter or unknown to a good portion of collectors, it is just one of my major pet peeves. Sorry for the rant. : P

Wave 5 Revealed Too Soon?

EntertainmentEarth sent out its weekly email newsletter this weekend with anice shot and details of the upcoming Wave 5 assortment of figures which focuses heavily on Expanded Universe characters.

This wave consists of an Imperial Stormtrooper, Darth Vader (McQuarrie), Hermi Odle, C-3PO w/Salacious Crumb, Roron Corobb, Yoda & Kybuck Steed, Tattooed Anakin Skywalker from Clone Wars, Darth Malak, Pre-Cyborg Grievous (Qymaen jai Sheelal) and the McQuarrie “Starkiller Hero” a female humanoid which eventually evolved into Luke and Leia.

Now a few hours later, when I visit my inbox, the accompanying photo for that EU wave has been pulled and the link directs you to a page on Entertainment Earth stating:

Bossk finally receives the super-articulated treatment and this version doesn’t leave much room for improvement. I suppose they could have included some Wookiee pelts. : P

Toyguide Update: IG-88 (Bounty Hunter)

The Toyguide updates tonight with the addition of IG-88 (Bounty Hunter), the third in the series of six new Vintage “UGH” Figures. Take every previous version of IG-88 you currently own throw them in the recycling bin, becauseTHIS IS the definitive IG-88. This may be one of the most intricately sculpted, articulated and assembled figures Hasbro has created. Although we received two of the weapons before, we’re treated to a new ax that is mounted to it back and a working holster. Too bad the supplied blaster doesn’t fit in it.

And here is a warning: IG-88’s bandolier has what looks to be 3 removable Thermal Detonators, one of them (the one highest on the shoulder) came off just fine and could be easily reattached, the next one’s peg snapped off inside the detonator! It might be best to just leave them alone and not risk damaging your newest acquisition.

The Toyguide updates tonight with the addition of the Imperial Stormtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear), the second in the series of six new Vintage “UGH” Figures. As one of the most anticipated figures since it was announced, this all new Snowtrooper doesn’t disappoint. The waist coat or “kama” has been corrected since the prototype images first surfaced and he also features a removable helmet revealing you know who underneath. Once these officially hit retail they won’t hang around long so keep your optics peeled.

First Look: CIV Clone Wars Poster

Next week’s biggest Star Wars party ever, Celebration IV, not only commemorates the past 30 years of the saga, but looks forward into the exciting future of Star Wars. Fans at the event will finally get a behind the scenes look at the forthcoming CG-animated television series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, produced by Lucasfilm Animation.

Producer Catherine Winder and Director Dave Filoni will be on hand to discuss the making of the series. As an extra treat, attendees will get a chance to take home the first ever keepsake of the animated series, a limited edition postercreated just for Celebration that showcases some of the stars of the new show.

How Does Anakin/Vader See The Events of The Star Wars Saga?

The Official Site has updated with information on a new entry in the Star Wars Expanded Universe– the Star Wars Saga told from Vader’s point of view. This upcoming release is written by Ryder Windham and published by Scholastic, so it will probably be a young reader book. However, if Windham maintains the quality we’ve seen in the Last of the Jedi, and it’s 2 predihessor series, it should be very enjoyable and interesting for fans of all ages. Click here for more.

Goodbye

It is with a mixture of sadness and joy that I make the following announcement.

Joy because in about 5 weeks, my wife and I will welcome our 2nd child, our daughter Claire, into our family. She will join her big brother Connor who is 2-1/2.

Joy also because, in what couldn’t be better timing for our family at this point in our lives, I recently landed a brand new job as a Graphic Designer at a local advertising agency.

But the sadness comes from the realization that I must streamline some things in my life and one of the things that must go is my position here at Yakface. I simply can’t devote the time to it that I was once able to.

I’ve only been with the site for a couple years, but I’ve had an absolute ball working on it. I’ve been very lucky to have made some great friends and had many laughs along the way.

As for the Hasbro Q & A which I was heading up, that will now be left in the more than capable hands of our very own Jayson, HE will show you the TRUE nature of the Q & A, HE is your master now!…LOL.

Though I won’t be an official Yak staffer anymore, I will still be a presence in the forums and may even pass on the occasional news item to my old Yak buddies as it comes my way.

So thanks to all of you, both Yak staff and readers alike, for making my time here so much fun. I will truly miss it.

So having curled myself up in the fetal position and sobbing like a newly born infant, Mildred couldn’t bring herself to continue her ham-fisted assault upon my person. And so it was that I peeled myself up off the moist evening asphalt, plucked chunks of congealed herring out of my clothing, and raced home with all due speed to provide you, loyal reader with the answers to the questions you are longing for.

Dan Madsen to Attend CIV with The Force Among Us!

Former Official Star Wars Fan Club President and Star Wars Insider Founder Dan Madsen will be “Special Guest” for The Force Among Us at Star Wars Celebration 4. He will be in attendance with Directors Cortney and Cristian Macht for The Force Among Us panel on Monday the 28th at 2:30 pm (Room 409 AB).

Dan Madsen was interviewed for The Force Among Us documentary and can been seen in the film’s “Highlight Reel” at YouTube (key word: The Force Among Us). Madsen’s own company, Fantastic Media, who relaunched the Lucasfilm Fan Club in 1987, was also responsible for creating and producing the very first Star Wars Celebration in Denver in 1999. As the founder of the Star Wars Insider magazine, Madsen worked closely with Lucasfilm on the Star Wars films as well as other George Lucas productions and created many exclusive Star Wars Fan Club collectibles which are treasured today. Under Madsen’s leadership, the Official Fan Club reached its highest level of membership. He is also the author of the book, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles: On The Set And Behind The Scenes. Madsen (who actually was an actor before starting his fan club business) can be seen in his cameo role as Dams Denna, the Kaadu Handler, in Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace. He is currently working on his own film project.

Lucas Making 2 Star Wars TV Movies?

At this week’s Time Magazine All-Star Dinner, George Lucas was tight-lipped about the upcoming Indy IV feature, the Clone Wars Animated Series for TV and the live action TV series. But, he divulged that he will make two more live-action films based in the “Star Wars” era.

“But they won’t have members of the Skywalker family as characters,” he said. “They will be other people of that milieu.”

The two extra films will also be made for TV and probably be an hour long each. But, like “Clone Wars,” Lucas doesn’t know where on TV they will land.

Hopefully we’ll get further confirmation and/or clarification at CIV.

“Star Wars” Weekends with Star Warwick Davis

For a few weekends every year, Disney/MGM Studios Theme Park becomes an outpost of a galaxy far, far away — unearthly characters in getups beautiful and bizarre roam the streets, browsers congregate at an exotic bazaar to choose among limited-edition treasures found in few places throughout the galaxy, and everywhere can be heard the immortal words “May the Force be with you.”

This year, “Star Wars” Weekends will take Disney World Guests out of this world on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, between June 1 and 24. And, as he has been almost every year since the event began, actor Warwick Davis will be on hand to sign autographs, ride in the Legends of the Force Celebrity Motorcade, and meet the fans who make these weekends so special. The Force Unleashed Replacement Wave

Since the highly anticipated The Force Unleashed video game has been postponed, it’s little surprise that Hasbro will be replacing the scheduled figures that were to come out this Fall with some repaints.

Our friends at Rebelscum are reporting details of the figures that will be coming out instead – all are repaints but some seem like they will make good additions to the line.

Toyguide Update: Order 66 Mace Windu & Galactic Marine

The Toyguide updates today with the addition of the second in the series of six Order 66 Exclusive Two Packs from Target: Mace Windu & Galactic Marine.The Order 66 packs are essentially “off screen” pairings of Jedi or Sith with a corresponding unique deco clone. This set includes the now inferior and often released sculpt of Mace Windu from the ROTS line with an added bonus of a new soft goods robe. The Galactic Marine on the other hand is a repaint of theGalactic Marine from Wave 1 of basic figures in the TAC line. These sets are warming an endcap at a Target near you for $9.99, hopefully they’ll be hitting the clearance aisle soon.

The Toyguide updates this morning with the addition of the last figure from wave 2 which also happens to be the 2 McQuarrie figure in the TAC line; the Concept Boba Fett. Again, Hasbro hits it out of the park with this figure, as soon as the concept figures were announced as being a part of the TAC line, this figure was one of the first one’s that came to mind. The Concept Fett comes complete with flame thrower, blaster pistol and 2 interchangeable heads which are based on production art used to develop the bounty hunter appearance.

Again, we receive a much needed update to a previously inferior figure dating back to the POTF2/Freeze Frame days. While he does come across as a little tall, as compared to Han or Luke from this wave, but when placed within the OT Imperial Ranks, he blends right in. You never know maybe he was a first draft pick for those Imperial pick-up games of B-Ball.

Toyguide Update: #12 Luke Skywalker (Yavin Ceremony)

The Toyguide updates continue this morning with the addition of Luke Skywalker(Yavin Ceremony). This is the third incarnation of this figure, the 2 previous versions were available way back in the POTF2 days, so this one is a much welcomed, if not flawed improvement. The paint operations on the hair could use a little work they are sloppily applied and also I don’t recall Luke having red hair. Another error this figure has is that he includes Vader’s Lightsaber hilt which continues to annoy me to no end. And to be totally accurate, Luke wasn’t wearing a lightsaber during the Yavin Ceremony anyway. Oh, well.

The Rebel Honor Guards were present during the Yavin IV Ceremony flanking the entrance to the Massassi Temple Ceremonial Hall. Think of them as less flashy Emperor’s Royal Guards. ; P. This all new figure has a ton of articulation for a character that just stands there, but it is a huge treat none the less.

UPDATE ALL NEW Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced?

The folks at Rebelscum have posted info that r2dtoys.com has updated their pre-order for the Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced x1 Starfighter to include an attractive boxed shot of this vehicle. Although this might just be a preliminary shot since the box has the call out for “Ejecting Wings”. As I recall, previous releases of this fighter had no such feature.

UPDATE: Upon closer inspection the attachment point from the fuselage to the wings/solar panels appear to be different! And the mold for the fuselage appears to be diferent as well! (Note the view port, center laser cannons & other “greeblies”.) So, it seems we might be getting a significantly updated/upgraded TIE x1. Thanks to Jeff from Jedidefender.com for having the eagle-eye. ; )

StarWars.com updates tonight with the revelation of the Celebration IV and Celebration Europe Luke Skywalker figure with venue-exclusive collector coins!

Hasbro will be offering this stunning figure at two events that Star Wars fans won’t want to miss this summer — Celebration IV and Celebration Europe!

The first chance will come at the Hasbro Toy Shop booth at Celebration IV, May 24 – 28 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This figure will be packaged with an exclusive commemorative coin with the Celebration IV logo on one side. Star Wars Action News – Episode 84

This week Arnie and Marjorie review an item that’s hard on the tongue but nice on the eyes, the Kotobukiya ARTFX Scout Trooper statue. This was an item Arnie had toyed with keeping or trading off, and he finally opened it up to give it a close look. Did it earn a final place in the Sithsonian?

Also, Arnie and Marjorie reflect back on 1988. Star Wars was 11 years old, and 11 is an awkward age for many things. Adolescence is nearing, youth is behind it. Star Wars endured this awkward period as well, and there was not much to show for it. Sure, behind the scenes Timothy Zahn was preparing to write Heir to the Empire and bring Star Wars back to the mainstream, but to the average person Star Wars was no where to be found…except on the screen of your Amiga or Commodore 64 computer. The Star Wars Action News hosts resurrect a “classic” video game from that period and see if it holds up with age.

Inspired by the creative mind of customizer Paul Hruby, a group of customizers from around the community have teamed up to create a customizing project unlike any other – a fan fiction Star Wars WORLD.

As the final days of the project approach, construction is really picking on the project, but there may be something YOU can contribute to this project too if you are an experienced customizer! Toyguide Update: Treachery on Saleucami Battle Pack

The Toyguide Updates this Easter Sunday with the addition of the Treachery on Saleucami Battle Pack. This set is a welcome departure from the other battle (re)packs as it includes not only 2 “new” figures, but vehicles as well. Here, we finally get a nice SA Commander Neyo and an EU-ish Clone Trooper which is essentially another Neyo but with Clone Commander Macrobinoculars grafted (non-movable or removable) to the Neyo-style helmet. And what Saleucami trooper would be complete without his BARC Speeder, so in this set we are treated to two.

UPDATE TRU AT-AT Mark..UP?

While this may vary from store to store, I noticed something today that could be frustrating to those of you still on the hunt for the Endor AT-AT.

The good news is they appear to be hitting the shelves with more regularity and in good supply (here in Michigan anyway). The bad news is they have been marked UP from 89.99 to 99.99. All the samples I examined had the 99 dollar price stamped over the old 89 dollar one and they scanned in at 99 bucks.

A strange turn of events to say the least. Here’s hoping this is not a chain wide policy.

UPDATE – I noticed the same thing yesterday at a St. Louis area TRU (Justin).

UPDATE 2 SInce this post, readers have been writing in with similar reports as well. Yak readers Jason and Robb have confirmed the 99 dollar markup at their local TRU’s. And reader Todd is reporting that the Times Square TRU wants $112 for the walker!

The Toyguide updates today with the inclusion of the most recent set, Series 7 to the new Kubrick Section. The basic set includes: Emperor’s Royal Guard,Gamorrean Guard, Lando Calrissian as Skiff Guard, Leia – Boussh Disguise,Scout Trooper and Spirit of Anakin Skywalker.

But that’s not all! Certain figures in the set also have the possibility of containing rare “chase” figures. The chase figures in this series are a non-spirit version of Anakin Skywalker (which I have yet to track down), Republic Senate Guard (the first Prequel Kubrick figure) and last, but certainly not least, our site mascot…Yakface!

Signage is starting to hit US Post Offices about the new Star Wars Stamps. Mine just got them in this morning (including an R2D2 and C3PO standup). However, not all postal employees even know about the R2 mailboxes, so don’t be surprised if they know if or where there is one in your town.
