We have what I think is a fun little exercise in “guess the Black Series figures” coming out in 2019. I’ve posted a series of 12 clues after the break to help narrow the field to the 3 characters. Ready? Set? Guess!
The biggest complaint so far with Hasbro’s Galaxy of Adventures figures is the laziness in execution stemming from the recycling of previously used sculpts for the first two waves. Things may be changing in that regard in late 2019 as more new figures are introduced as well as vehicles and beasts. What is even more interesting is that we’re hearing of a potential scalechange too (comparable scale and price to the 5” Marvel Infinity War line). That would essentially mean that there wouldn’t be two competing 3.75” lines vying for collectors dollars with just the Vintage Collection remaining. Toyfair 2019 is next month so we’ll have to see how/if/when this plays out.
We are only two months away from 2019 and from what we’ve seen thus far (officially), Hasbro’s mantra is basically “what’s old is new again” thanks to the reissue of older figures (essentially repacks) but with an updated look care of Photo Real tech being applied to the 3.75″ scale. Some don’t like the approach of having so many “repacks” for super-articulated figures, especially at today’s price point. The later half of the year looks brighter for the line and, thankfully, there are a few surprises left make their way across the Dune Sea of the retail landscape…. While Hasbro has officially announced the Vintage Collection Chewbacca (repacked from the 3.75″ Black Series line) today at MCM Comic-Con, we’ve heard word of another repack coming to fill an empty slot in the assortment for 2019: R2-D2. Now, it would make sense to re-release that BaR2-D2 (VC25) to accompany the barge, but this figure is currently – and curiously – labeled as “E4”. I guess we’ll have to wait and see when it’s officially announced.
Doing some investigating around my usual haunts, I came across some frightening details about a new assortment of figures called Story in a Box*. From what I’ve been able to gather, there are 4 different sets: Darth Vader, Jedi Luke, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 and should retail for around $10 each. Beyond that, I’ve heard that these figures are minimally articulated (the price point gave up that ghost) and should be available in late 2018/early 2019.
Maybe we’ll hear more about these at NYCC — or maybe not.
The hunt continues for new and as-of-yet unannounced merchandise. Further digging has revealed two new mystery Hasbro action figures at the $49.99 price point. “Star Wars Rey Action Figure” and “Star Wars Darth Vader Action Figure”. These are not the $49.99 Black Series Centerpiece figures judging by their respective UPCs. We’ve added the pertinent info to our UPC/DPCI/SKU Master List Page at the bottom of the Black Series section. (Their placement there doesn’t confirm or imply that these are Black Series related products.)
As always, rumors of unannounced products may change or be cancelled altogether at anytime.
UPDATE: According to Amazon, the packaging 2.6″x9″x11″ – interestingly, that is (nearly) the same dimensions as the Captain America/Crossbones 2 pk of Marvel Legends 6″ figures. Time will tell I guess.
Evidence of another 6” Black Series Exclusive has surfaced from EB Games in Canada. And due to the mythological code name of “Conan” we can assume that it somehow ties to Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Thanks to Avi G. for the heads up and Ben R. for the image.
UPDATE: this figure is 6” Moloch (code named Chronos in the US at Target)
Following up on our 6″ Black Series 2019 report from yesterday, it’s time to check out what we can expect for some of the 3.75″ Vintage Collection figures for next year. Surprisingly there are not a lot on this following list that support Jabba’s Sail Barge. Not surprisingly there may be a fair amount of repacks again from Walmart’s exclusive releases and potentially older TVC figures. Click on through to check out what we’ve uncovered.
While doing some research over the past couple of days on few new UPCs I found on Brickseek, I came across more as-of-yet unannounced and rumored products for the Black Series and by “more” I can confirm 17. If you frequent some of the Black Series groups on Facebook, I’ve been “hinting” at some of them, but if not and your curiosity is piqued, click on through and maybe we’ll see some of these confirmed at SDCC this year.
Millennium Falcon, Landspeeder, X-wing, TIE Fighter, AT-AT, B-wing, Y-wing, Slave I, TIE Interceptor, and The Khetanna (Jabba’s Sail Barge) – all of these Original Trilogy vehicles have been released (or will be) in the modern interpretation of the classic Kenner packaging via the Vintage Collection. There are a lot of great products coming for 2019 (only some of which we’ve rumored/revealed), but what classic Star Wars vehicle do you think we’ll see next?
